Over the past few years of Johnny’s life, his feelings for Cilla have changed. At the beginning of the book, we are told that Johnny has “no particular objections” (Page 7) to marrying Cilla. You can see them start to slowly click when Johnny reveals the truth about the cup and his middle name. Once Johnny burns his hand, Cilla begins to take sympathy for Johnny and secretly helps him. Page 51 states: “But someone would usually slip a piece of hard bread, cheese, jerked beef, or salt fish and johnnycake in the pocket of his jacket as it hung on its hook. He knew it was Cilla, but he never spoke to her about it.” After Issanh got scared of Johnny’s hand, he took it out on the two girls. He claimed to Mrs. Lampham on page 81 that he wouldn’t marry “that girl even though you gave her to me on a golden platter.” Ironically, Johnny is later sent to court and wants Cilla to testify for him. After Cilla helped him out of trouble, Johnny Tremain started to respect her. Her consistency irritated him. On page 132, it says: “That very feminine faithfulness of the girl irritated him, but he had not admitted this to himself.” Once Rab discluded him in time with Cilla, Johnny was very unsure. “Cilla had changed so much Johnny felt confused.” (Page
The next character that had a relationship with Johnny is Rab. Rab and Johnny have the best relationship in the book because Rab is the only character that believes in Johnny. Rab shows this when Johnny says “what will I do”, Rab said to him “You’ve got twenty days to practice log splitting and then you’ll open chests”. This shows that they have a good relationship because even when Johnny is doubtful Rab believes that he can do it. The last person with a relationship with Johnny is Isannah.

After John learns of Tita’s infidelity he gives her a mature and heartfelt message, “ ‘Tita, it doesn’t matter to me what you did, there are some things in life that shouldn’t be given so much importance, if they don’t change what is essential. What you’ve told me hasn’t changed the way I think, I’ll say again, I would be delighted to be your companion for the rest of your life--but you must think over very carefully whether I am the man for you or not” (223). Tita cheated on John with Pedro, whom she had loved at first sight, and was surprisingly unfazed by this news. John took a very different approach than what would be expected from someone in this situation. He very calmly accepted what he had been told and gave Tita an option: Marry him or secretly be with Pedro.
The largest and most important decision of Johnny’s life, which ultimately brought him to his death, was to go into the burning church to save the lives of children that were trapped inside and would have died.
