For this assignment I observed student and faculty members in the second floor of the Johnson Center, located in George Mason University. It was a Thursday around 1:15pm. I was sitting at a high table in front of the bookstore so that I can have a view of the entire floor. Nothing out of the norm occurred during the hour and half minutes I stayed there. However, I did see a couple of behavioral norms operating in this site. The second floor of the Johnson Center (JC) is known to be an area many individual socialize throughout the day. During my observation one thing I noticed, off the bat was how loud it was. The JC has many tables for individuals to sit, socialize, eat and study. There was a group of about three people sitting at each round
On 03/02/2017, I, Chad Agnew, was working as a patrol officer for the Wichita State University Police Department, in Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas. At approximately 1551 hours I was in Human Resources when I heard other officers get dispatched to Jardine Hall Room 201 for a panic alarm. I notified dispatch that I would be enroute since Human Resources in close to Jardine Hall. When I was approaching Jardine, I observed a male wearing a hat with shoulder length curly hair standing outside the front doors on the east side of Jardine. As I was entering the building, I walked past the male.

My least favorite activity in class was Station Eleven research proposal. I had some trouble doing it in the beginning because I wasn’t specific enough when I chose my topic. A problem that we as students of Huston- Tillotson University see on a daily basis would be how our furnishings reflect us academic students. We plan to attack this problem by employing multiple methods such as raising awareness by surveying, observing, and also researching the benefits new furnishings would give.
This can come in a variety of ways, including objects, technology, rooms, desks, and so much more. In this case, the Brower Student Center had so much material culture to offer. In the popular building for students deemed the “stud”, there are tables, chairs, steps, a food court, a game room, and many other physical objects in this setting that are for students to use at their disposal. Another piece of material culture that was very prevalent in the student center was the amount of
For a student to obtain success as they have come to know, they believe conformity is of the utmost importance. This then plays into the desire to fit in. In the case of The Citadel, because they must conform to certain personality changes, this sacrifice is often toxic. Developed in part due to the four-class system, first-year student who are referred to as “knobs” take the brute force of the ritualistic hazing. This group of students are often tortured relentlessly until they either quit, conform, or wait it out until the first year is over.
Many of their principles align with my teaching philosophy as well as my classroom management preferences. For example, on the very first day of school, my students and I will work together to develop a behavior contract that will contain the rules/norms of our classroom. We will brainstorm ideas together on an anchor chart, and then I will consolidate these responses into cohesive phrases. Once the “published” copy of the behavior contract has been presented to the students, and no changes need to be made, each student will sign the contract, indicating that they plan to abide by these rules every day, and if they make a poor choice, they accept the consequences that are to follow. The consequences for the broken rules/norms will also be discussed as a class.

Being around those who are different makes it easier for individuals to determine who exactly they are or who they hope to be. In his essay on community, Amitai Etzioni argues, “the good society seeks to cultivate only a limited set of core virtues than a thick set of values” (9). In the community that is a college campus, students each have their individuality. But being a student at college means entering a community. Under the Principle of Interaction, factors that affect student experience include those that are internal to the student, and those that are “objective” parts of the environment. The students’ perceptions of, and reactions to, the objective factors are influenced by their attitudes,
