Julius Caesar Ethos Pathos Logos

“Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears,” Antony tells the people of Rome during his passionate funeral speech. After Brutus and his conspirators assassinate Caesar, Brutus gives a speech saying his actions were just. Antony is not a proponent of Brutus’s actions and therefore tells the people why what Brutus did was immoral. Both men give meaningful and long speeches, and although Brutus is sincere in his defense, Antony uses more emotional, logical, and ethical appeal to the people, making his speech stronger. Although Brutus uses logos in his argument, he weakens its meaning but creating it a fallacy.

First, Antony uses logos to appeal to the logic of the people of Rome to persuade them to join his side.

In Shakespeare's play The tragedy of Julius Caesar after Caesar was slain by the conspirators, at his funeral Brutus and Mark Anthony both gave a speech about Caesars' brutal death and how they public should react to it. Brutus, being the smart man he is was using a lot of logos in is speech to win the crows over and to justify what has happened. While on the other hand Mark Anthony was using a lot a pathos to get the crowd on his side to get them to read his will. Brutus's speech was packed full of logos which made him seem more credible. Antony wants to remind the Romans that he is credible for speaking of Caesar “that love my friend, and that they know full well, that gave me public leave to speak of him” (III.ii.215-216) Antony uses ethos after telling the Romans everything to convince them in being against that conspirators’ that he can speak of Caesar because he was a close friend of Caesar. Antony convinces the Romans to retribute the conspirators’ for what they have done “In every wound of Caesar that should move the stones of Rome to rise and mutiny” (III.ii.225-226) Antony wants revenge and is convincing the Romans to riot by using pathos. Antony wants the Romans to feel sorry about Caesar’s death “here was a Caesar! When comes such another?”

By refusing to read the will several times and admitting that what it contains will cause the people to have such a great love for Caesar that knowing he is now dead will be unbearable, Antony ignites curiosity in the people and furthermore, a subconscious feeling of respect and graciousness toward Caesar. Basically, Antony uses Caesar’s will to convince the people that Caesar was a selfless, kind-hearted man and those who killed him should be ashamed and punished for killing an innocent man. Through Antony’s use of paralipsis, he is able to plant a seed of admiration for Caesar and one of hate for the conspirators in the hearts of the plebeians. In his speech to the citizens, Antony also asks many rhetorical questions to cause his audience to pause and reflect on how they really feel, or how Antony wants them to feel, about certain people and events that have recently become important. The appeals in Antony’s speech were persuasively better than the use of them in Brutus’s speech. Marc Antony uses all three appeals in his speech to make a very sturdy argument. An example of logos in his speech is when he states, “He hath brought many captives home to Rome Whose ransoms did the general coffers fill: Did this in Caesar seem ambitious?” This speech is Antony stating facts of Caesar’s work which proves that he is not ambitious and does not deserve to be killed. Antony also uses ethos and pathos when he says, “He was my friend, faithful and just to me.”

Antony uses pathos he communicates to the people in a way that Brutus did not. Since, Antony is not allowed to say anything bad at the funeral he discretely criticizes Brutus and Cassius because he feels that what they did was wrong. For example, when Antony makes a comment that is contrary to what he means, he says “But Brutus is an honourable man”. Antony uses a lot of pathos because he wants the citizens to feel the way he is feeling. For example, he says he wants to read them the letter but he does not want to make them weep because of how much Caesar loved them.

In the play Julius Caesar, by William Shakespeare Rome is struck with utter disorder after certain characters use ethos, pathos and logos to manipulate the people of Rome. One character who uses ethos, pathos and logos is Cassius to manipulate Brutus into joining the conspirators. Brutus also uses ethos, pathos and logo to justify his killing of Caesar. Last, Mark Antony uses ethos, pathos and logo to manipulate the Plebeians against Brutus and the conspirators. Thus, Cassius, Brutus and Mark Antony all use ethos, pathos and logos to manipulate one another and bring the people of Rome to their sides, resulting in total chaos.

Brutus and Antony use ethos, logos, and pathos in their speeches to convince the commoners of their side of the story. One person just so happens to be more convincing than the other. Using ethos,

Exactly, you would want and trust a leader who would do anything for the good of their country. Julius Caesar was murder by Brutus and the other conspirators but they said it was for the good of Rome. Brutus and Antony both gave a speeches over Julius Caesars death to appeal to the plebeians. Brutus funeral speech was a more effective speech than Antony because his use of ethos, pathos, and logos made the plebeians focus on his words more.

In the play "The Tragedy of Julius Caesar" by Shakespeare, two individuals named Brutus and Antony give a funeral oration to the people of Rome in concern of the justification of Caesars death. Both of them share an opposite view towards the death of Caesar, Antony thinks his death was unjustified, while Brutus believes in the opposite. Despite the fact that Brutus was able to deliver a better ethical appeal. Antony delivers a more persuasive rhetorical speech since he appeals to the crowd more with his emotional and logical appeal Ethical appeal was used by both individuals in their funeral orations, evidently Brutus was able to execute a better ethical appeal than Antony. Brutus wanted to make the people of Rome feel like the death of Caesar was necessary for the sake of Rome.

Marcus Junius Brutus and Mark Antony both deliver speeches to justify the death of Julius Caesar in 44 BCE and both use Logos and Ethos to convince the Roman citizens to join their sides. Both sides deliver their speeches with vehemence and start by elucidating why Brutus killed Caesar to begin with, why Antony’s desire for revenge is justified, and what the future of Rome will be because of his death. Antony teases the citizens of Rome with the will of Caesar that he holds in hand and claims it will dishonor Brutus and the other conspirators and is also one of his vital uses of Ethos in his speech. Most of the citizens, if not all of them side with Antony and will most likely help him accede to a great title of power in the future and also betray Brutus because of what Antony has them believe, i.e. an ignoble assassin.
