Julius Caesar was born in Rome around 100 B.C. When he was a child his family was extremely poor. At the age of sixteen Caesar’s father died but Caesar remained close to his mother. After his father’s death, Caesar sided with the nobility. Caesar met a noble named Cornelia and got married. Sulla, the Roman dictator didn’t approve of his marriage. “Sulla ordered a to divorce his wife or risk losing his property” (Biography.com). Caesar found a way around it by refusing Sulla’s request and served in the military. He first served in the province Asia and then in Cilicia. Around the same time period his wife Cornelia passed away. About two years later Caesar married Pompeia, which was a distant relative of Pompey. Their marriage only lasted a few year until they got a divorce. “ In 61 B.C. he served as governor of the Roman province of Spain” (Biography.com). Caesar continued his alliance with Pompey, which got him elected as a consul member. Caesar kept making alliances with more people, such as Crassus, which who was a general during Sulla’s rule. Crassus played a huge role in Caesar’s rise to power because he gave Caesar financial and political support. Pompey, Caesar, and Crassus decide to be allies instead of enemies. These three men came to be known as the First Triumvirate. This alliance allowed Caesar to become a dictator in the near future.
