Julius Caesar was born into a middle-class family to Gaius Julius Caesar and Aurelia Cotta. The family had very little political influence in Rome, if any. Aurelia Cotta’s birth family had some influence. When she married Gaius Julius Caesar, she did not have influence in Rome anymore. At 16, Gaius Julius Caesar had passed away leaving his son Julius the head of the family.

In his early years, Caesar left Rome to join the military. Caesar traveled to many places around the world including Asia, Cilicia, and Rhodes. When Caesar traveled to Rhodes for philosophical studies, he was kidnapped by pirates. He was able to have a naval force organized that ended up saving Caesar and killing the pirates. In 60 BC, Caesar, Crassus, and Pompey formed a political alliance known as the First Triumvirate.

The alliance combined Caesar’s enormous popularity and legal reputation with Crassus’s fantastic wealth and influence and Pompey’s equally spectacular wealth and military reputation. The formation of the first triumvirate was critical due to the fact “ it’s formation was the turning point in the history of the free state” (Scullard), which determined the fate of the republic declining. The effect of Scullard sources is resource efficient and reliable as he heightens our understanding about the military and political happenings of the time. When Crassus died after the battle of Carrhae, Pompey gradually drifted with his alliance with Caesar. Caesar’s popularity with the people soared, presenting a threat to the power of the senate and to Pompey.

The establishment and breakdown of the First Triumvirate The Establishment of the First Triumvirate took place in 60 BCE when three political powers in Rome felt like their achievements were being completely disregarded by the Senate of Rome. Gaius Julius Caesar was an accomplished statesmen, Gnaius Pompeius Magnus, otherwise known Pompey a popular military and political leader and Marcus Licinius Crassus was richest man in Rome, a roman general and politician set aside their differences to form an alliance, a non legally binding agreement, in order to further their political careers. During the alliance of these political powers, many rules and legislations were created and the most powerful people, the optimates, became extremely disempowered.

He fought in many wars and became involved in Roman politics. After having many alliances, he then became the dictator of the Roman Empire only to rule for just one year before his death. In 86 BC, He married Cornlia daughter of a nobleman, they had a daughter by the name of Julia Caeseris when Cornlia passed away he remarried to Pompeia, granddaughter of the Roman Dictator Sulla. Their marriage lasted a good amount of year but later divorced. Later in 59 BC Caesar married Calpurnia, she was a teenager who he remained married for the remaining years of his life.

This alliance was known as the First Triumvirate. After a year as consul, that included getting the senate to pass laws largely because of intimidation by Pompey's troops, Caesar landed the governorship of Gaul, specifically the areas of Cisalpine Gaul (northern Italy) Illyricum (south eastern Europe), and Transapline Gaul (southern France), which gave him commands of four legions. He conquered a number of territories in Gaul, with the legions becoming his source of power and while conducting wars, in 53BC, Crassus was killed, resulting with Pompey appointed as consul and the triumvirate

He would later join a triumvirate with Pompey and Crassus and who would rule over Rome for some 7 years. His victories in the Gallic wars only heightened his want for power. By 51 B.C. Julius’ ability to run a military was incomparable, which alone jeopardized Pompey’s leading. Thus, in 50 B.C. Caesar was expecting to become dictator for life because of his accomplishments without the Senate voting on him. In order to fulfill his dream of developing Rome, Caesar needed more political success through alliances. He found the best two alliances that would take him further to the path of success. He first aligned with the Roman General Pompey then he allied with a powerful Roman politician Crassus. Further, Caesar’s alliance with Pompey was strengthened with the marriage of Caesar’s only daughter Julia with Pompey.
