Julius Caesar was assassinated by about 40 Roman senators on the "ides of March" (March 15) 44 B.C.E. Caesar's death resulted in a long series of civil wars that ended in the death of the Roman Republic and the birth of the Roman Empire. Caesar is stabbed to death by the conspirators on the steps of the senate. Brutus delivers the final wound. Antony, who was friends with Caesar, shakes hands with the conspirators. When he is left alone, Antony curses the murderers and talks of revenge. On March 15, 44 B.C. a group of Roman senators murdered Julius Caesar as he sat on the podium at a senate meeting.
