The Keck Geology Consortium is dedicated to enhancing the diversity of future scientific communities and sharing our science with a broader audience. Please describe how you, based on your personal background and life experiences (including social, cultural, familial, educational, or other opportunities or challenges) will contribute to this mission during and after participation in a Keck research project.
Six years ago, I made the life-changing decision to join my local 4-H club. At the time, I didn’t realize just how valuable this experience would be and what an impact it would have on my life. I thought 4-H was just for urban “farm kids” looking to show livestock when, in reality, it encompasses so much more.
Before joining 4-H I did not consider myself a people person. After building relationships within my club and volunteering, I was

My time in 4-H, working, volunteering, and my first semester of college have provided me with leadership opportunities and experiences that were often challenging. In order to cope with these challenges, I had to develop skills that would allow me to move forward.
The first of which is the ability to work well on a team. This skill is one that I’ve had to practice in many environments such as completing a group project, playing softball, working in food service, and volunteering as a camp counselor. I’m willing and able to negotiate elements and I always take into consideration the ideas of my teammates.
Out of those situations I also had to learn to be an effective communicator however, my skills were really put to the test during my year abroad as an exchange student. I arrived in my host country with only a few phrases under my belt. As a result, I learned to learn to be a good listener and to be precise in my speech. I also came up with creative methods of expressing my views or explaining
(Harris, 2004) The downfaulting of Death Valley is correlated with the extension of the lithosphere in the Death Valley region, which plays a part to the uplifting associated with Sequoia – Kings Canyon National Park. The Batholiths of the Sierra Nevada mountain ranges are prominent in both parks, exposing “plumbing systems” in magma chambers that fed the volcanoes. “Magmatic differentiation” involves the crystallization of a magma with magma of a different chemical composition, creating more than one type of igneous rock, which can be seen in both Yosemite and Sequoia – Kings National Parks. (Harris, 2004, 748)
The Teton Range consists of a core of igneous and metamorphic Precambrian rocks overlain in most of the range by westward dipping sedimentary Paleozoic rocks. The Grand Teton Range consists of rocks ranging from the Precambrian, Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic time periods. The erosion-resistant Precambrian rocks comprise the highest peaks of the Teton Range and are part of the Wyoming Craton. The oldest units (>2680 Ma), observed in the north, south, and the eastern part of the central Tetons, are Archean layered gneisses, including biotite gneiss, plagioclase gneiss, amphibole gneiss, and some amphibolite (Reed and
Mesa Verde is most well known for its cliff dwellings found in the sandstone of its dynamic landscape. The Mesa Verde National park was originally established for the main purpose of preserving these very same archaeological sites. Without the geology of the area these dwellings might never have come to be, or preserved so splendidly. While it has many different geological formations on the property John Carrara states that “The Mesa Verde is essentially a broad, flat, upland surface sloping gently to the south and dissected by deep canyons containing ephemeral streams.” (Carrara 2014) The majority of the rock formation found in the park were formed from sediments from the crustaceous age (Carrara 2014) .
What exactly is 4-H? 4-H is an organization sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, established chiefly to instruct young people, originally in rural areas, in modern farming methods and other useful skills, as carpentry and home economics. 4-H is a program that started in the late 1800s, the 4-H emblem was created and changed throughout the years to what it is today, and has made many different types of advancements throughout the changing society. The roots of 4-H were started in the late 1800s and was officially recognized in the early 1900s.
Have ever felt pure jubilation? Well I have! All because of 4-H! I think people should join 4-H because it’s a great learning experience, 4-H can help you get a job, help you get into a college or university, you can get a scholarship, great way to be social, and great opportunity to interact with
As you can see I have learned many things through 4-H that I may have never learned if it weren’t for this amazing program. I would not be the person I am today without 4-H. 4-H is my life (I am a “4-H Nerd” as Mrs. Kindra says). 4-H is not just a club or program but a family, a family that will always be there for me. 4-H is a place where I am free to be myself.
Things that helped me through my career are what created my leadership philosophy. There is an “M” in team; Build professionals by being a professional, everyone needs humility to succeed; Just relax. There is an “M” in team, because the team starts with the “Me”, the individual. Everyone on a team has a duty to prepare themselves mentally and physically. If all members of a team take ownership of their personal preparedness, a team’s success is certain.
Running head: Geologic History Paper 1 Geologic History Paper Chevian S Dudley Ohio Christian University December 10, 2017 Running head: Geologic History Paper 2 Naturalistic Evolutionary is the view that species of life comes from natural causes only, it happens without a motive are any supernatural being. It is a theory that tries to explain the development of living species. Naturalistic Evolutionary is a natural process. The theory of evolution is part of cosmology and part abiogenesis that leads to comprehensive model of the organ of species, the Earth
One of the many benefits of the middle school model is that being part of a team forms a bond between the teachers and students. “The team and their students truly become a community of learners.” (Kellough & Kellough, 2008, pg 8) In order for a team to be successful teams must provide tools to help students grow. (Erb, T. O, 2006, pg 5)
One thing I realized was that I do a better job when I take my time and let the talk flow on its own speed rather than asking previously planned, and directive questions that may sometimes break the continuity of the talk. This is a bit hard for me to do, since I am an introvert; but I know that I have to become an extrovert when it is necessary. With that said, I have to plan my talks regardless, because I tend to get very nervous when I do not know how to resume the conversation. Anyways, I now have an idea about how to strategically place planned questions into the flowing conversation. This is the biggest yield of this
All aspects of 4-H help to better our nation's youth through leadership and responsibility-building opportunities and provide youth with personal development opportunities through livestock contests, public speaking competitions, and more. 4-H is the largest youth development program in the country, consisting of over six million youth. Self-reflections on communication skills It is inescapable to have interpersonal conflict in any relationships and situations. (Solomon&Theiss, 2013) Yet, we should be able to handle conflicts with skills. Regarding the conflict I encountered, there are some communication skills I should have known and
Introduction Team leadership encompasses many things. It may seem like a simple and small task, but in a real sense, it is complex and comes with responsibilities, and commonly, it determines the success of any team or a group. However, the value of teamwork should not be overemphasized considering that all organizations need individuals and personnel who are willing to share ideas, listen to others and contribute to the problem solving of any given group or a company. Team leaders should have the ability, authority, and power to analyze data and information with a team of people with a common aim and objective as well as issues. The leader should understand the dynamic patterns, the connections and relations between paramount factors in these objectives, aims and issues that help in the analysis process.
Communication is a skill that is necessary for each negotiator. The book explains how important it is to listen carefully to one another. Poor communication leads to feeling suspicious, unsympathetic, and confused. In general, I always enjoy listening to others and acknowledging what they are suggesting..
Leadership and management are two qualities that have the potential to positively impact any aspect of life. With myself being a student-athlete, I realize the importance of robust leadership and management. I have been on teams and worked for employers with poor leadership and management, and observed the shortcomings from those inadequacies firsthand. Athletics have provided me with ample opportunity to develop and shape leadership and management traits from an early age. As a current Division I collegiate athlete and a former three-sport high school athlete, I recognize what leadership and management strategies work when it comes to maximizing a specific group’s potential.
