Kurt Cobain: Murder or Suicide? For decades, the death of Kurt Cobain has cast a shadow over the world of rock music. Kurt Cobain 's untimely suicide transformed him into a martyr who has come to represent much more than he might have ever intended or thought he could. Kurt Cobain is legally recognized to have committed suicide; however, several conspiracy theories have surfaced suggesting that the frontman of Nirvana was murdered.On April 8, Cobain 's body was discovered at his Lake Washington Boulevard home by electrician Gary Smith who had arrived to install a security system. In dual-process theories of the Mind there are two major information processing systems. System 1 and System 2, are theorized to support most forms of cognitive processing. Brain structures activated during System 1 processing are centered on the amygdala, the ventral striatum, dorsal cingulate cortex, ventromedial prefrontal cortex and lateral temporal cortex. System 2 processes information in a slow, effortful, conscious manner. Outputs of System 2 are experienced as generated voluntarily by the Self. System 1 thought processes operate automatically, process information fast, are heavily influenced by context, biology and past experience, aid humans in mapping and assimilating newly acquired stimuli into preexisting knowledge structures, and are self-evidently valid experience alone is enough for belief. In contrast, System 2 thought processes are controlled, effortful, intentional, and require justification through logic and evidence. While Daniel Kahneman’s, and his research, have been influential in psychology and economics in helping understand the fallibility of human reasoning and decision making, his explanation of fallibility of System 1 overlooks the important adaptive value of System 1.
