Walking up to the magnificent La Pedrera building the first thing I had to see was the pillar known as the elephant's foot. This pillar is notorious and was mentioned in the reading due it occupying too much space on the sidewalk of Passeig de Gracia. During construction Gaudi was informed of this by the government and told to make modifications, but Gaudi wouldn't budge. He wrote a letter back to the government and stated that if he were to modify the pillar, he would include a mocking inscription that would be-little the government. Fortunately the government rethought their demands and the pillar wasn't changed but this small aspect of the construction process I find awesome. Gaudi was a powerful and smart enough architect to tell the government …show more content…
After some explaining, I found out that Casa Mila is Gaudis most functional building and the wavy shape of the palace efficiently uses all the space provided by the octagonal block it sits on. Looking even deeper into the facade, you notice that the buildings exterior consists of large carved white stone that fit together like a puzzle piece. This method of building is one of the reasons why the building was named La Pedrera or the Stone Quarry. Supposedly during construction, the entire block would be filled with stone masons chiseling away at these massive stones so that they fit perfectly in place. No stone in the building is the same and instead of the building having a bright colorful facade like Casa Batllo, Casa Mila has a very pale colorless facade. The reasoning behind this lack of color is that when envisioning the building, Gaudi wanted every inhabitant to grow ivy off of their balcony so that over the years the entire facade of the building would be encompassed with beautiful green ivy. Like many invisions Gaudi had with the building, this one didn't come true and the facade, to this day, remains pale
And this one amazing thing has nothing to do with sex, drugs, or women. It has merely to do with the architecture of the old city. All of the history lies within the walls of the city. All the buildings were built in a time were they put a huge amount of work and effort in their craft. They let there art flourish with in every brick and detail put into what they were crafting.
In the article Half-Measures Won’t Erase the Painful Past of Our Monuments, by Holland Cotter, cotter describes the connotations of historical monuments from the past and how it impacts the present by using rhetorical choices such as ethos, pathos, and a neutral tone, to relate to those who have been impacted by the history and to spread more awareness about their history. The government’s actions on whether the monuments convey a positive or negative messages, is not satisfying, which is related to the title “Half-Measures Won’t Erase the Painful Past of our Monuments”. Through the use of pathos, Cotter relates to readers who have been impacted by the people who are being celebrated by monuments, by referring to the messages monuments
Raising the Roof is a Canadian not-for-profit organization dedicated to ending homelessness. The first charity of its kind, Raising the Roof has been working to create long-term solutions to the homelessness crisis in Canada since 1996 (About Us, n.d.). The majority of Raising the Roof’s campaigning is dedicated to bringing awareness on the issue of homelessness through collaborations with stakeholders, education, and the investment in local and national social programs (About Us, n.d.). The topic of homelessness is one that is often left in the shadows of local and national politics. The sensitivity of the subject requires that Raising the Roof fight even harder to garner the attention of their audiences, and elicit both emotion and positive action through their storytelling strategies.
F. Scott Fitzgerald, the author of the book The Great Gatsby, uses color throughout the novel to provide the reader with greater insight into a significant theme that expectations or hopes become false realities. The major colors in The Great Gatsby include: green, white, and yellow. The color green is used in the book to symbolize Gatsby’s lifelong dream and end goal of winning Daisy. The color white is used many times in association with Daisy. The color symbolizes pure beauty on the outside and hollowness on the inside.
The green represents money at an extremely rich and fancy nightclub. Lastly, “the green color runs throughout the whole novel, and it is closely related to Gatsby’s short life. So it symbolizes Gatsby’s original dream and hope” (p. 41) Gatsby lived a short but luxurious life filled with potential and hope originally, until his encounter with Daisy, Tom, George, and many other characters, who got him into trouble with already married
Versailles and Forbidden City represent the difference of traditional cultures and art between the East and the West. Versailles has a elegant U-shaped main building in the center and a royal court with diverse plants. Inspired by the architecture of baroque Italian villas, but executed in the French classical style, the garden front and wings were encased in white cut ashlar stone that called enveloppe. The inner palace for royal family living is decorated with minors and luxurious lights. Sculptures and paintings are displayed in every corner.
He uses the color green to highlight ‘Gatsby’s dreams, ambitions and hopes. One can note that the color green has been showing up in the whole novel. Green is also connected heavily with the green light that shows the place of ‘Daisy’, the green light represents ‘Daisy’ in ‘Gatsby’s own eyes who happens to be an enormous part of his dreams. Another color Fitzgerald stresses on is White, one can see Daisy wearing a white dress the first time she sees ‘Gatsby’ and when she sees ‘Nick’ for the first time. On her 18th birthday, she wears a white dress and gets a white car, even her house is decorated in white.
Jane Elliot, one of America’s most respected speakers on prejudice and discrimination, is well known by her quote speaking of American identity, “We don 't need a melting pot in this country, folks. We need a salad bowl. In a salad bowl, you put in the different things. You want the vegetables - the lettuce, the cucumbers, the onions, the green peppers - to maintain their identity. You appreciate differences” (Elliot).
Historically, the Stele was not as important until it was later discovered in Copan. However, at the time, the Column took an incredible amount of work to be built. Therefore, it was one of the most important of its time. These two pieces both tell a great deal about the cultures themselves, both
From Bauhaus to Our House by Tom Wolfe Tom Wolfe’s scathing short From Bauhaus to Our House obliterates modernist architecture in 111 pages of sarcasm, wit, and an unyielding frustration with everything modern. In the blink of an eye, American architecture transformed into a collection of glass, steel, and concrete boxes. The International style had the U.S. in it’s anti bourgeois grip, and was not letting go anytime soon. Wolfe, with his personal preference to ornate structures, detested modern architecture and the international style.

3 MATERIALS AND METHODOLOGY 3.0 INTRODUCTION Energy analysis of buildings helps to simulate the amount of energy used in a building. It is very important as it helps to discover and ascertain new ways of conserving energy and ensuring energy efficiency of building components. Building developers, construction engineers are increasingly interested in creating more energy efficient reason, and for this purpose whole building energy simulation programs are being used to determine strategies that save energy and are cost effective. The most common way available to perform this building energy analysis is to implement building information modelling(BIM). Building Information Modelling(BIM) consists of a digital representation of physical and functional

Gottfried Semper was a major figure in the field of Interior designing. He was an architect and an art critic who contributed majorly to the study of interiors .He proposed his ideas and thoughts in his book, “Four elements of architecture”, in the year 1952 and it was a huge success. In his book, he developed the theory that origin of architecture could be dated back to the primitive era when human civilization was at its peak. As compared to the modern ideology that architecture consists of structures made from materials, his theory revolved around the four main elements of the primitive era that were essential to human life.
The built environment can impact physical movement designs from various perspectives. The built environment can be separated into a substantial number of classes. For the motivations behind this review, built environment has been isolated along two lines. In the first place, Transportation systems speak to the total consequence of interests in transportation infrastructure.
