After he made the rules he told everyone to follow them, no one had a say. Power is used in a negative way. Creon used the power he had in a negative way. That negative power is more powerful, because in the play no one did anything to stop him. He ruled them with fear.

Anyone can gain power, but not many can keep it without losing it quickly because of bad decisions. Many people let power go to their heads and end up losing everything they have. There are lots of people who have power in society, but some have it more than others. Everyone tries to obtain it, especially throughout history. Power has been around for millions of years and is still around to this day. Whether it’s wanting to become a king, an emperor, a Pharaoh, or a president. If you’re placed in a certain social class hierarchy that, determines how much power you have.

Abusing power is capable of ruining many lives, including the individual’s. Having power can be a good thing, but misusing it, such as characters from the works Brave New World, Oedipus the King, and the movie, The Giver causes destruction. In each work, a character possesses great power and misandles it. In Brave New World, Mustapha Mond is able to dehumanize an entire civilization with the use of many practices and drugs. Oedipus, in Oedipus the King, lets his hubris get the best of him, and results in a horrible punishment for himself.

Throughout history the ¨powerful¨ people have controlled citizitation to make their view of a perfect life. In the Truman Show, Peter Weir suggests that even those with the most power think they do the right thing with it but really they use their power to control others. As the director of The Truman Show Kristoff uses his power as director to control everything in his perfect town of Seahaven. Similarly in the novel, Animal Farm, George Orwell suggests that “power is in tearing human minds to pieces and putting them together again in new shapes of your own choosing”.

John Steinbeck a powerful writer once said “Power does not corrupt. Fear corrupts… Perhaps the fear of a loss power”. This quote by John Steinbeck basically means that sometimes the thought of the loss of power can inflict fear and that would basically lead to corruption. The fear of the loss of that power would corrupt the persons mind and they would eventually want more power.

How does one acquire power? Well according to multiple sources, it really isn’t that difficult. Follow a few simple steps and you are on your way to becoming the most powerful person in the world. But why do we want power, and what makes it attractive? Why as human beings, are we so focused on ruling over others and getting what we want when we want it?

People have many different reactions when given power. The reaction is usually either one where they use power for a greater good and to guide others in a better situation, or they can misuse the power given and take advantage of the circumstances or others to make themselves feel even more dominant and in command. In the play, Antigone by Sophocles one of the main characters , King Creon, abuses his power to take superiority of others and in an attempt to gain control. The misuse of power is more frequent than the use of power for the favorable, even in many current events.

Power can have the persuasive action in undoing the moral ethics of one’s character. This can be seen throughout history, such as World War II and proven by the actions of Napoleon in the allegory, Animal Farm, by George Orwell. As Lord Acton said “Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” In history what was viewed as a villain, is never the same as the perception. A leader does not begin wanting to do wrong, they start with the best intentions, but power is a tricky thing.

Power is present in all role of the story and the character who symbolises it is Créon. But power of goods are omnipresent as well, represented by Antigone, and there is a confrontation between both of them. Following examples of passages of the book are presented to evince the presence of the authority and power in the play. Starting from the beginning, even if is not represented in the play, the first power conflict was between two brothers. Polynice betrayed his brother Eteocle when he did not want to cede the throne of Tebas, they died fighting each other and Creón became king of Tebas.
