Late 1800's And Early 1900: A Very Brief History Of Psychology

The presuppositions I had before taking this class concerning the history of psychology were based on the things I had learned previously about the founding fathers of psychology. The thoughts that I had were that many of the founding fathers were not very stable themselves. I also had learned that there was a lot of cocaine abuse in those early days, which added to my disrespect for some of the people who had been instrumental in launching psychology as a scientific study. In addition to the lack of faith in the character of these founding fathers, I had also come to the conclusion that they had very little solid data for their conclusions and even among their peers there was a lot of skepticism regarding their conclusions. Without measurable research based on solid data and controlled studies that the field of psychology has had to fight hard to become a reputable science.

Hannah Hendrix Ms.Harder English 3 Honors 15 February 2023 Mental Health Treatments in the Early 1900s and Why they were Harmful Horrifying, shocking, and downright nauseating are words that some choose to describe the things done to those who were perceived to be suffering from mental illnesses in the early 1900s. These range from being chained up, drowned, shocked, cut open, and even detaching the entire frontal lobe from the brain. Needless to say, not a first-class experience.

Chapter 6 and 7 covered a lot of concepts regarding mental illness; and out of all the mental ilnesses, depression and stress really stood out. Stress and depression stood out because every single mental ilness underlying problem was depression; and usually triggered by a stressor. Depression and stress play a role in veryday life, and probably have played a greater role in adolescent years. This reminded me of when I was in middle school, and especially high school. Adolescences is one of the hardest time in a persons life, because of all the pressures coming from every direction.

Mental Illness in the 1800's: something needed to be done If you had a mental illness in the 1800's you'd be put into an asylum which usually had horrible conditions. Thanks to Dorothea Dix that is not how we treat mentally ill people today. Dorothea Dix reformed society by showing the gov. how people were treated in these asylums and wanted to make the conditions better by, for example putting in libraries.

Freud’s psychoanalysis and Pavlov’s behaviorism would also spread throughout the world as people were becoming more educated. Numerous concepts can be attributed to the growth of both education and media. Times were continually changing, and the 1900s were no exception to this widespread

John B. Watson was an american psychologist who studied behavioralism and conditioning in the early 20th century. He is credited with the creation of Behaviorism, which is now a very prominent branch of psychology ("John Watson"). Watson is well known for his various published works and experiments. Watson achieved many things in his lifetime, most noticeably a gold medal from the American Psychological Association for his contributions to Psychology (Weiland). He overcame many personal issues in his life, which led him to be a better psychologist.

With the help of Joseph Beuer, Freud opened up his own private neuropsychiatry practice in 1886(Husman). Working together, both men believed that mental illness ’s start from traumatic experiences that happened in the patients past, but were forgotten. They that this would help the patient recall the experiences and allow them to think about them and then to discharge them, which would remove the psychological causes of their symptoms. This theory was apart of their Studies in Hysteria, a book published by Breuer and Freud in 1895.

Ancient psychology: The term psychology just recently came ,the history of the today’s psychology is not very long but that does not mean that the there was no concept of the mind turning against the man itself only difference was the reason of going mental was connected to supernatural. This was a time in which many psychologists hoped to thrive by providing “a valuable service to the nation” as Paul M. Muchinsky, author of Psychology Applied to Work put it. Robert Yerkes was monumental in the movement to bring psychology into war. Some of his many ideas included ways to screen recruits for mental deficiency, and a way to better assign work to said recruits. A committee was also formed, this group of psychologists began looking into soldier motivation and morale.

Psychology is defined as “the scientific study of the mind and behavior” (Introduction to Psychology, 2015). Psychology provides an overview of biology and behavior, sensation and perception, learning, memory, intelligence, language, motivation, emotion, abnormal psychology, and therapy (PSY 102 Course Syllabus, 2018, pg 1). Because psychology allows for a better understanding of how the mind and body work, this knowledge can be beneficial for any field of study or career. The theoretical and practical understanding of the basics of psychology can help with decision-making, critical thinking, stress management, time management, better understanding of others, improving communication, and even achieving goals and objectives, all components that allow someone to be more successful throughout their life. Throughout this course I hope to gain a greater understanding of historical and theoretical perspectives of human behavior and development (PSY 102 Course Syllabus, 2018, pg 2).
