Latin American Imperialism In Mexico

Historians often divide the Mexican Revolution into three main periods of fighting due to its length and complexity. Of the three periods, the one that had the most impact on Mexican society at the time was the first phase in which Francisco Madero overthrew Porfirio Diaz as new revolutionary leaders such as Emiliano Zapata and Pancho Villa arose. This period allowed people that were not usually involved in politics to become more involved. The phase of the revolution that had the most potential to create change in Mexican society later was the third one that saw Conventionalists take on Constitutionalists for control of the country. This stage created the Constitution and led to a single political party gaining control of México.

Mexico as a nation is relatively new, only gaining independence from Spain some 300 years ago. During this time of independence, Mexico had trouble getting on their feet and was a newly nationalized nation. In the book “A Glorious Defeat, Mexico and its War with the United States” by Timothy J. Henderson, the author, gives insight into the newly founded nation of Mexico, and how they came to be. Henderson also gives the reader an in-depth point of view from Mexico pertaining to the Mexican-American war, from how it led up to it and the events that happened during it. In September 16th of 1821, Mexico gained Independence from Spain with the help of the United States. The United States was in the guise of Manifest Destiney, which they expand westward. Mexico lacked the strength of population number in the north gives places for the American immigrants to move in. The political issues raised by the new settlers became the dominant topic in Texas during the period. Spanish government gave Moses Austin of Missouri a contract to establish a colony on the Brazos River with 300 Catholic Families in January 1821.

Like many missionaries, De Las Casa envisioned a dream of new findings, useful tools, and riches. However, upon arriving to the “newly found” territory that was discovered the Conquistadors had already assumed that the Indians were naïve and too trusting, for that reason, they would be slaughtered. Until the time came to seize, the conquerors made sure to form strong relationships that ensured the indigenous people of no harmful doing, to their knowledge. Amid sharing personal secrets, values, beliefs, and belongings came an overwhelming sense of greed which triggered the crucial and harsh reality which was soon to come. Nevertheless, still being gullible, thinking this was a fair trade they continued which contributed to their downfall of

Anglo-American colonization in Mexican Texas took place between 1821 and 1835. Because Spain had first opened Texas to Anglo Americans in 1820, less than one year before Mexico achieved its independence. Its traditional policy forbade foreigners in its territory, but Spain was unable to persuade its own citizens to move to remote and sparsely populated Texas. There were only three settlements in the province, small towns with outlying ranches. The missions near the latter two, once expected to be nucleus communities, because they had been or were being secularized, while those near Nacogdoches had been closed since the 1770s.

Before 1890, America was against imperialism, which is acquiring colonies for the sole reason of building an empire. America was once a colony, so they were only interested in trade than colonization as they expanded into more territories. In 1867, Russia offered the Americas Alaska in exchange for seven million. President Andrew Johnson, at that time, wasn’t entirely convinced on taking Alaska, but Vice-President Seward convinced that the U.S. would gain not only more land, but new resources such as gold and oil. For Hawaii at first was trade then establishing business.

The American, Mexican, and French revolutions were similar and different in their own ways. There was a common cause, goal, and effect of each of these three revolutions in addition to the unique causes, goals, and effects. All of these revolutions were caused by political instability, had the common goal of political reformation that was met through revolutionary events, that resulted in the formation and adoption of a new constitution and form of government. There were many causes that led up to these three revolutions, some are shared by all three, some only by two, and some are unique causes. All three of these revolutions were caused by political instability in the country these revolutions took place in.

In 1494, the Treaty of Tordesillas was established in order to evenly divide unclaimed lands between Portugal and Spain. This led to the Line of Demarcation, in which the non-European world was divided into two zones. Portugal had rights to the eastern hemisphere, and Spain had rights to the western hemisphere. This allowed Spain to colonize areas in the New World. Even though they had this opportunity, they were not able to colonize specific areas in North America due to competition with other European countries.

Many of these countries faced the same problems in their economic development during the turn of the 19th century. Mexico is seen to being very highly influenced by its neighbors with elites often adopting themes that are successful in other countries. These newly adopted ideas that the elites brought about to the country created a large divide within the social classes due to ignorance in wanting to modernize. The Los de Abajo’s and the Los de Arriba’s, the social classes in Mexico often clashed in what they believed was right for Mexico and found it very hard to come to terms with each other. Judas burning and violence throughout the religious holy week did not aid to bringing these two classes together either.

Following the end of the Industrialist Era and the emergence of countless technological advancements, the United States entered the world stage. The United States was attempting to create an empire by expanding to land outside of its own borders in order to benefit the country’s economic interests. Many citizens, whose views were greatly influenced by their understandings of national identity, saw this overseas expansion in conflicting ways. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, these groups differed in their opinions on the idea of expansion due to either their wanting to remain a democratic country built on the ideals of freedom and liberty to preserve their sense of national identity, or their wanting to expand for economic reasons and nationalism. Imperialism, which is the extension of a country’s power and influence through expansion, began as early as the 17th century, when Britain colonized the New World in order to expand economically and gain natural resources for manufacturing.

When Mexico gained its independence from Spain in 1821, a string of ruthless dictators and weak presidents made Mexico an easy target for its powerful neighbor, the United States. The US swooped in to expand its territory and its popular institution of slavery. By doing so, the US started a war with Mexico that was justified for illegitimate reasons. The Mexican-American War was not justified because the US took Mexico’s land for the expansion of slavery, and justified their taking advantage of Mexico when it was politically weak by hiding behind Manifest Destiny.

Benito Juarez was the head of liberal reform and president of the country from January 15, 1858 to April 10, 1864. Benito Juárez took possession of the Presidency after the flight of Ignacio Comonfort, before the War of Reformation. Juarez wanted to institute constitutional reforms and create a democratic Mexico, but the French intervened. However, he endured the French invasion and protected the Mexican government from being overthrown by an itinerant government.
