Although Beowulf contains aspects of courage and bravery, it also contains leadership by leading a group of Geat warriors to kill Grendel, slaying Grendel's mother, and vowing to defeat the dragon. Beowulf showed a great deal of leadership when he led the group of Geats to Danes to defeat Grendel. The fact that Grendel had killed 30 mean at a time didn't even scare Beowulf away. When Grendel had came to the mead hall and tried to kill Beowulf he grabbed a hold of Grendel and ripped his arm off showing that he was not afraid (Loughman). “Beowulf boasts about being able to kill Grendel with his bare hands” (Post), he “creates an inspirational articulation of confidence in his own and in his companion's’ abilities to overcome adversity in the form of the monster” (Loughman) and is “fearless and supremely confident in his own abilities” (Loughman). Even though he boasts about being able to kill Grendel, he “indulged in his desires” (McArthur) and killed him. When Beowulf arrived back in Danes after Grendel was killed, “Hrothgar repays Beowulf “with a gold standard as a victory gift/ an embroidered banner: also breastmail/ and a helmet: and a sword carried high,/ that was both …show more content…
“Comrades willingly go with him because of the confidence in his ability to lead them and to achieve their objectives (Loughman). When they got to the den Beowulf went in alone and slayed her himself (Loughman). Beowulf is not worried about the enemy, he just wants to keep the people out of danger and become a hero because “his mind is untroubled by envy or malice or the thought of enemies with their hate-honed swords (McArthur). Yet again, Beowulf “indulged in his desires” (McArthur) and had done what he had set out to do. After Beowulf had killed Grendel's mother, he returned home to become king; ruling for 50 years to come
In the epic tale, Beowulf, a hero emerges and goes on to become a beloved leader. What makes Beowulf, the main protagonist of this epic, such a leader? Based on the article, Beowulf and the Teaching of Leadership, by Tom Laughman and John Finlay, I postulate that Beowulf is a charismatic leader. According to the authors, Beowulf fits into the Conger and Kanungo’s Charismatic Leader Model (p 159).
He had defeated the monstrous Grendel which would typically be not so easy to do, but it was for him. Grendel was out to destroy the Danes. Beowulf had put together a well thought-out plan and waited for him to step into Heorot before he attacked him. He was also going in without any weapons in order to make the fight fair since Grendel would not have any. As Grendel first stepped into the Heorot he had tore a man to shreds.
In contrast to Hrothgar lamenting his dear friend, Beowulf proclaims, “It is always better to avenge dear ones than to indulge in mourning” (1384-1385). Beowulf praises the idea that the best way to react to death is not by wallowing in grief, but instead trying to punish the killer for his wrong; it is more of an effective method to accept a loved one’s death when his murder is slain. His loyalty to the Danes is projected through his conviction of getting revenge for the sake of the one who died. Grendel’s mom has proven to be very vicious, nevertheless Beowulf ascertains he should pursue a brawl anyways. Beowulf is willing to put his life on the line to avenge a life for the nation he cares about and protects.
The story Beowulf contains many different rulers that people follow. Among the various characteristics these men share, a few great qualities shine through, these being generosity, loyalty, and bravery. The leader Beowulf portrays these qualities multiple times throughout the story, which define him as a model of leadership for all times. One of the reasons is that Beowulf always acts decisively and courageously to combat evil, and he is also noble in his actions. He knows how to create peace as well as to wage war.
In the journal article, Beowulf and the teaching of leadership by Dr. Tom Loughman and Dr. John Finley, both authors examine Beowulf’s character as a leader towards his nation, if he falls into the conger and kanungo’s charismatic leader model and if so, does the story show risk of an overreliance. As I have read this article, I liked the way they organized their ideas and gave explanations connecting them to the real world. They explain how Beowulf fits into being a charismatic leader, but they need more supporting details from the epic. According to Dr. Loughman and Dr. Finley, a charismatic leader are “seen to be engaging in exemplary acts that subordinates interest as involving great personal risk and sacrifice” (159). Beowulf travels across the sea, leaving his home to save the Danes from the invincible monster known as Grendel (157).
Yes, Beowulf is brave, but not because he wants to do the right thing, he wants gold and glory. Beowulf is known as a great hero and on the surface he is. He seems to be brave and just but underneath that, Beowulf is extremely arrogant and egotistical. Beowulf does not just do things for they are the right thing to do, he does them seeing that great deeds will bring him honor and boost his reputation. He fights Grendel for bragging rights like the swimming contest Unferth brought up and he refuses to use a sword when fighting Grendel because it will just add to his bravery.
The continued honor shown in Beowulf’s character shines through when Beowulf never mentions that Unferth’s trusted sword was no match for Grendel’s mother. Beowulf could have simply boasted how the sword was useless and ineffective against the female beast, yet he was silent out of respect for Unferth. Finally, during Beowulf’s time as ruler (fifty winters), another beast arrives: a dragon. This time, Beowulf is much older and is in a much weaker state than when he first defeated Grendel and his mother. However, that does not deter Beowulf from going out and defending his kingdom.
Beowulf is a historical poem that was made in the 8th century. Beowulf has taught many people in the world that we should always fight and succeed when it comes to our obstacles. Beowulf is a story that is mostly fighting the people that Beowulf fights for is his king and allies after all he is a strong warrior.he fights lot in the story and someone he fight is grendel a evil monster he fights and dies as a loyal soldier. Beowulf is a wonderful book that poems admiration and loyalty in every way possible. Beowulf was a strong warrior to show how he was i have this quote directly said by beowulf himself”If death does take me send the hammered mail to Higlac and return the inheritance i had from hrethel l and he from wayland fate will unwind
Beowulf declares that he “drove five great giants into chains, [and] chased all of that race from the Earth.” He is immensely overbearing at that point because he is too proud of his achievements. Being excessively prideful does not exactly label Beowulf as a hero. Beowulf assumes all of the courageous acts he fulfills will make him
Beowulf says, "No Weapons, therefore,/ for either this night: unarmed he shall face me/ if face me he dares"(55. 683-685). This passage shows that Beowulf is fighting Grendel for the pride of killing the greatest monster, instead of fighting Grendel to save the Danes. If Beowulf's top priority is to save the people, he would have known that his best chance would be to wear armour and use weapons, but because he wants the pride and fame he goes into battle without armour or weapons. Beowulf was the best chance for the Danes to be safe again, and if Beowulf went in with no armour and no weapons, and died, then Grendel could continue killing men, women, and children every day until he finally dies.
Beowulf risked his life multiple times by battling Grendel and Grendel’s mother to save the people of Denmark. He also embarks on a battle with a dragon as an old man ascending on the Geats Throne. Each battle Beowulf fought has all been for the safety of his people. Although the Knight did not battle as a deed for his people, he also is viewed as a humble person his battles were for a purpose greater than himself. The knight never talks about his brave and valorous deeds.
He strangled Grendel with his bare hands. He fought Grendel’s mother by himself with no hesitation and fought the dragon to the death but in doing so Beowulf gave his life for those he vowed to protect. Beowulf’s life story is a true epic hero that will be spoken for
Beowulf’s exact words were ‘’Alone shall fight for me, struggle for the life against the monster’’ (Beers 173-174). For proof of his accomplishment Beowulf decided to take, snap, and brake Grendel 's arm apart even his shoulder was missing. Although Grendel escaped going back to the hole he crawled from death soon followed him.(Beers 370-375).Beowulf became famous and was given glory for saving King Hrothgar’s kingdom, but some still questioned despite the arm if Grendel had really been killed. Following after Grendel’s death ,his mother came to avenge her son’s death.
In spite of this Beowulf goes through an awesome journey of all these creatures and a great fight to eliminate the problem of Grendel and his mother. This caused Beowulf to make the Geats and the Danes allies which is great as a leader. He also brought riches to his people through the help of the generous Hrothgar. “And risked the voyage received a bounty, some treasured possession. And compensation in gold, was settled for the Geat Grendel had cruelly killed earlier.
Beowulf went through so much to prove he was worthy enough to protect their kingdom and defeat Grendel. The story Beowulf was a great story to read and a great movie to watch; however, the battles were very eye catching and had a lot of extravagant and heroic doings of Beowulf. The first scenario that I’m going to discuss in the movie and story of Beowulf is The Battle with Grendel. In the movie Grendel attacked Beowulf in the Heriot while everyone was dancing and singing.
