C.S. Lewis narrates a sermon called, Learning in War-time, where he articulates why people should learn during times of war. Lewis’ reasons as to why we should be educating ourselves, despite negative circumstances includes: humankind always being in a state of crisis, if mankind postpones searching for knowledge until life is secure for everyone, the search will never begin, we need to learn in order to have knowledge and skill when combatting bad philosophy, and surrendering yourself to only one cause, like the war, removes you from God. First of all, Lewis elucidates that some Christians scorn others for not devoting all their time to religious activities, and that to answer bad philosophy there must be knowledge of what constitutes as good philosophy. Notably, Lewis makes two separate points, but they connect to one another; for it’s bad philosophy if Christians believe that the only way to glorify God is by participating in religious activities. And at what point does it become an idol in someone’s life? Is ignorance ever a better option? It also reminded me of a question I asked myself earlier in life, how can you learn amidst a crisis?
To conclude, in high school three major tragedies occurred in my life: my cousin passed away without warning, my grandma was diagnosed with breast cancer, and my three year relationship ended. As a result, I struggled to focus on my studies and my depressive state led me to question the point of learning. This viewpoint was later eradicated when I realized I should be learning despite my struggles. Consequently, Lewis’ sermon explains what I had discerned, that it isn’t healthy to quit studying during hardships because God makes us knowledgeable, and to utilize our minds is to glorify

I begged him to continue to guide my studies on a deeper level.” (Doc E). This passage shows that people were not only continuing to educate others, but some were actually begging to be educated on a further level.

The whole psychology of it, the strengthening of religion in hardship isn’t totally absurd. It would seem through all the loss involved in situations like the Holocaust or 9/11, that some aspects aren’t completely lost. Perhaps putting all one’s faith in a God could supply help to make it through extremely difficult times. It could help keep people alive as they wait for some sort of redemption or subtle sign that their God is there with them. Jews viewed their destitution as trials, Christians viewed theirs as God being unable to interfere with the natural world.

Often times, it is assumed that learning does not have negative consequences and leads to one’s enlightenment What people don’t realize is that being thrown into the light can burn. Associating learning with pain is clearly illustrated in both Plato’s Republic and Frederick Douglass’ The Education of Frederick Douglass. Both works represent people who move past their ignorance through the acquisition of knowledge and step into the light, both literally and metaphorically; they become aware of their own situations and with that comes pain. Book seven of Plato’s Republic (trans. 1968) presents the allegory of the cave and the idea that learning isn’t always pleasant.
Clive Staples Lewis (C.S. Lewis) was born in November 29, 1898 –November 22, 1963 and he was a British novelist, poet, broadcaster, and Christian apologist. C.S Lewis wrote “The Four Loves” in 1960. The Four Loves explore the relationships between the different loves a person can experience. The four loves are: Storge (affection), Philia (Friendship Love), Eros (Romantic Love), and Agape (Divine Love). C.S. Lewis mentioned that the Gift-Love is “love which moves a man to work and plan and save for the future well-being of his family, which he will die without sharing or seeing” (pg. 11).
Education, a life-altering event that involves the development of being more open- minded. When one’s horizons expand they begin to have a shift of perception. The process of becoming knowledgeable through education can differ from the individual or situation. It can also have one acquire gratitude for their change of insight. Two passages, “Learning to Read” by Malcom X and “The Allegory of the Cave” by Plato, each contain an individual who goes through the path of gaining wisdom.
