The Connection that is Disconnecting People
Are electronics and social media reducing learning, connection, and focus? In the essay “Leave Your Laptops at the Door to my Classroom,” Darren Rosenblum answers this question. Rosenblum talks about laptops have become a distraction to learning in his classroom and decrease connection; he also mentions that laptops are an escape from hard work. Rosenblum effectively discusses how laptops and social media are reducing education, focus, and connection.
In the article, Rosenblum describes how, due to the fact that laptops reduce learning, connection, and focus, he will not allow them in his classroom. He says of distractions in the class, “One study found that laptops or tablets consistently undermine exam performance by 1.7 percent” (qtd, in Rosenblum par. 6). He says, “Screens block us from connecting, whether at dinner or in a classroom” (Rosenblum par. 6). Electronics are connecting people over social media while disconnecting people from real life. I also agree with this statement because although electronics connects us many ways, they are disconnecting us from real life. It has become such a problem that most people would much rather send a text than simply call a person. Many things like Snapchat, Facebook, and Twitter connect people in many ways, but not to the people in front of them.

Even with a world that’s heavily influenced by technology, there’s still a way to make a connection between people. Some people will go to concerts together. Others will go out to dinner. Some just go to the park or stay at home and chat. Technology isn’t necessary when wanting to connect with someone.
The main objectives in chapter 9 include the ways media attempt to influence people’s attitudes, beliefs, and/or behavior, ways media technology can be disruptive and have adverse effects on behavior, the positive and negative influences of certain kinds of media, such as advertisements or reality television programs, on self-image. Even though media is a great outlet, media has changed our generation causing effects on self-image and human interactions. Because of its pervasiveness in American culture, the media affects people in both obvious and subtle ways. Modern media comes in many different formats, including newspapers, magazines, television, social media, etc.
Timothy Snyder a Yale professor and author of “Why Laptops in Classrooms are Distracting America 's Future Workforce”, states his opinion on why laptops shouldn’t be allowed in the classroom. He feels that laptops aren’t being used for educational use, students are losing their focus and are being detached from humanity. Snyder has observed that when a professor walks into his or her lectures a class, instead of seeing an audience of students there’s nothing but backs of laptops. He also gives thanks to wireless internet for giving the student easy access to various internet outlets. Instead of being in tune with their studies, the class is surfing the internet for the latest gossip.
The issue of assuring that every student is actively participating in the classroom is a wide concern. However, the issue as to how to fix this is a highly debated topic. We can explore these opposing opinions in two works. While both the articles “The Littlest Schoolhouse” by Ta-Nehisi Coates and “Leave Your Laptops at the Door to my Classroom” by Darren Rosenblum explore how approaches to students’ learning styles can assist in the classroom, “The Littlest Schoolhouse” explores expanding the way students learn through technology while “Leave Your Laptops at the Door to my Classroom” discusses the benefits of banning technology entirely from classes. Both Ta-Nehisi Coates and Rosenblum can agree on at least one thing: The goal of education
Sometimes people use television to forget about a hard time at work, others using phones in public, causing lack of communication with people nearby. “Little by little, technology has become an integral part of the way that people communicate with one another and has increasingly taken the place of face-to-face communication. Due to the rapid expansion of technology, many individuals fear that people may be too immersed in this digital world and not present enough in the real world,”. People, especially in the United States, spend so much time on the internet they get separated from their real life and don't know what’s going on around them. Not only does Technology take away from everyone's real life, but it also distances people from family and friends.
Sue Honoré, an independent learning consultant who has studied people who were born from 1982 to 2002 has that “while young people are "undoubtedly capable of long periods of concentration", those who spend a lot of time alone using technology tend to have less in the way of communication skills, self-awareness and emotional intelligence”. It has been proven that around 31 nations that students who used computers everyday in class had lower test scores in reading and math than students who don’t use them as much (Study: Students Who Use in School Doesn’t Help Test Scores). Though technology is amazing and has given so many people different opportunities they would’ve never had before it is resulting in a few bad habits for students. Casey Schools systems around the United States have begun to rely on technology to teach their students instead of teachers to teach them. According Michael Godsey, a veteran high-school English educator, even said and agreed with many people today that we are at the point in time where since we have the internet at our fingertips, there is really no need for teachers
As Jam 's voice described, "There 's one ancient pay phone in the girls ' dorm, and one in the boys '. There isn 't any accessible Wi-Fi" (Wolitzer.16). The lack of access to technology also made it easier to connect and communicate with other students. Technology makes it hard for anyone to concentrate, especially when you are being constantly reminded of the past that you are trying to forget. The lack of access to technology forces students to interact and engage with each other and the world around them.
In today’s modern society technology plays a huge role in everyday life. Technology has a big position in education. Today students use laptops for school on an everyday basis to take notes, work on assignments, and research. Many people agree that, when it comes to education, technology can either be very harmful or very helpful. Timothy D. Imagine all of a students classwork, homework, and even his classes, on a single tablet screen. Technology has overtaken the world and has miraculously become something that the majority of humanity uses on a daily basis. New laptops, tablets, phones, televisions screens, and other devices create new innovations every year. Now technology is being used for education. In an age in which we are surrounded by information, it’s no wonder that we congregate around our newly found idols such as cell phones, televisions and computers, that provide us with unlimited information. We’ve become addicted and the worst part is that we aren’t even aware of it.
