Leon Kuwata Character Analysis

Where we’re from, who we know, and how our mental makeup is, is very important in our lives. It can be the deciding factor between life in prison and a life dedicated to giving back to others. In The Other Wes Moore, The lives of two young men are examined through three distinct lenses, how the role our environment, social capital (How we get ahead by helping each other) and how our mindset can dictate who we become later on in life. Both of these young men grew up in roughly the same environment, the ghettos of Baltimore, Maryland and the Bronx, New York, respectively.

In the workshop, “What baseball taught me about diversity,” Antonio D. Evans explained the way diversity connects to every aspect of playing baseball. His experiences throughout his baseball career taught him how to be culturally diverse and how society can become culturally diverse. He mentions that he played on teams with people who didn’t think like him, act like him or look like him, but he accepted them as a human being. Evans’ also states that baseball is a good teacher of life and you can be bad seventy percent of the time and still be one of the best.

How does one man go from a bright and dashing young man, to a drab lifeless one? Frank Shabata in O’ Pioneers! had this transformation, all because of two young people’s choices. Frank caught his wife, Marie, committing adultery in his orchard late at night with a young man Emil. He shot and killed them on the spot, then was sentenced and sent to the Nebraska State Penitentiary in Lincoln. Willa Cather did not send Frank to the State Penitentiary merely because it was the closest prison, but for a reason with more significance.

The quote “Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass it’s about learning how to dance in the rain” means that we should learn how to our lives even at struggling times of our lives. There are times when we are feeling down or going through tough times. Weather it’s bad grades or a tragic event. I can make a text to text connection from this quote. In the book “We Beat The Street” by George W Jenkins, Rameck Hunt, and Sampson Davis, is about a how three african americans from Newark, New Jersey became successful doctors.

Some people are great athletes; others are great humanitarians, but Roberto Clemente combined both characteristics in one, dynamic package. From his early years as a poor child in Puerto Rico to dizzying heights as a pro baseball player for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Clemente’s life is one of inspiration and admiration. “If you have a chance to accomplish something that will make things better for people coming behind you, and you don 't do that, you are wasting your time on this earth”. (Roberto Clemente) Roberto Clemente came from a very humble beginning.

At the age of 5, I aspired to either become a professional athlete or an ESPN anchor. Ever since I could remember, I would kick a soccer ball around, dribble a basketball, or throw a baseball around with friends and family. I used to be the league champion and MVP of the team every season, but as time progressed, other competitors would rocket past in height and become the best players because of their size advantage. Although other young athletes became stronger and taller than me, it did not change the passion and commitment I had for sports.

“The Big Field” by Mike Lupica is a great book for readers that love baseball. The book is a realistic fiction that has two hundred and seventy two pages. I enjoyed this book because I play shortstop for my baseball them just like the main character in this book. Keith Hutchinson but goes by the name “Hutch” is the main character in this book. He is a young boy that is an avid baseball player for the Cardinals his hometown team.

The upbringing of a child contains many factors, many of which correlate to where a child grows up. The people, culture, and experiences of someone’s childhood are the greatest determining factor for what kind of person they will become. So how does the nature and nurture of one’s upbringing impact the decisions that they make, and their life in general? Author Wes Moore explores this question in his memoir, The Other Wes Moore, as it relates to two lives in particular. Moore main purpose in this book is to explore the overarching impact that a collection of expectations and decisions, not always one’s own, can have on someone’s life.

Imagine going somewhere that you would absolutely despise going to. You go there, and after you arrive home, you think about your experiences there and realize that you actually had a delightful time! This is how Auggie, from R.J. Palacio’s book, “Wonder” feels. Auggie is a 10-year-old boy who has been homeschooled his whole life. Everything about him is normal, except for his face.

Ralph Waldo Emerson once said that, “envy is ignorance; imitation is suicide.” (370). John Knowles’ A Separate Peace is set during World War I at Devon School, a boarding school for boys. The book centers on Gene Forrester, a student at Devon, who could be described as an intelligent, but jealous, conformist. A Separate Peace illustrates Gene’s envy and imitation of his friend, Finny, and how it affects himself and his relationship with Finny, and also how Gene eventually finds peace.

To be trapped in one's own mind may be the worst prison imaginable. In Charlotte Perkins Gilman's "The Yellow Wallpaper", the narrator of the story is constantly at battle with many different forces, such as John, her husband, the yellow wallpaper that covers the walls of her room, and ultimately herself. Throughout the story the narrator further detaches herself from her life and becomes fixated on the yellow wallpaper that surrounds her in her temporary home, slowly driving her mad. The narrator of "The Yellow Wallpaper" is a major and dynamic character as she is the main character of the story, and throughout the story her personality and ways of thinking change drastically.

Most of Vladek Spiegelman has many (strange) personality traits. He can be headstrong, stingy, short-tempered and even borderline racist at times. As the reader reads through Maus I and II, it is learned that most of these things about him stem from his experience being a Holocaust survivor and living through World War II. Before the war, he didn 't exhibit these traits. With his first wife Anja, he is undoubtedly kind, compassionate, and wealthy.

“A true friend accepts who you are and helps you become who you should be.” Steve and Nathaniel proved that friendship and happiness can be real in the novel The Soloist by Steve Lopez. The way friendship is portrayed in the novel is unexpected in such a way that we don’t see it happen often in our daily life. It is important to our society because finding a true friend is really difficult to find. True friendship is hard to find now in days because we expect many things in return from other people.

The play “ A Raisin In The Sun “ wrote by Lorraine Hansberry is a inspiring play about the Younger family. A typical African American family in the late 1950’s trying to make life better for themselves. They’re a family trying to overcome the difficulties and obstacles that comes with being black in America in that time. Obstacles such as lynchings,segregation,racial discrimination and overall the difficulties that comes with being black in America. With external problems within the family the characters also internal conflicts within themselves.
