Leonard Fraser: The Rockhampton Rapists
Leonard John Fraser is considered one of Australia’s worst serial killers. His family and upbringing were all considered ‘normal’ and there was no abuse when he was a child, however he was said to have below average intelligence. He did drop out from school at the age of 14 and sentenced to 12 months in jail when he was 15. He continued like this until he received a life sentence for the murder of a 9 year old girl.

Murder is heard in the Supreme Court and has the worst (longest) punishments available for the judge to use which is a life sentence. In this case there was enough evidence to leave the jury without a doubt that he was guilty. The reason he was given three life sentences in 2003 is because murder carries a mandatory maximum sentence of life. Due to his extensive criminal background starting from an age as early as 15 and his life sentence he was serving out at the time it meant his sentence had to be maximum. This is because in the courts he was said to be a sexual predator who was a danger to the community as well as having no conscience. Fraser’s mental capability would have been one of the reasons he was never deterred from breaking the law, which is another reason as to why he had to be put away for life. In 2003 however not much was known in relation to mental health. This would result in a more lenient sentence today as judges tend to order out a smaller

A serial killer is defined as “an individual who kills more than three people in succession without a cooling off period”. From the beginning of recorded history to the present day, humankind has seen its share of serial killers from Giles De Rais to Jack the Ripper, murder is not a new concept. However in 2006 a new name was added to the ongoing list of serial killers, Robert Pickton, aged 58, plead not guilty to 27 charges of first degree murder. Due to the similar situations in which multiple murders occurred in those cases, it was used as a referral for the sentence given. STATUTE Section 19A (1) of the Crimes Act 1900 (NSW) states that life imprisonment is utmost punishment for murder. This was a main factor that contributed to his sentence – life imprisonment. Throughout the centuries, many people have been diagnosed with the title “Psychopath.” A psychopath is someone who has a mental disorder that causes them to act violently towards people in society and is unable to show sympathy or remorse after what they have done. Canada has had many notorious psychopaths over the years, but there is always one that must outshine the rest; so to speak. Paul Bernardo was not only a psychopath, but he was also named “Canada’s notorious Serial Killer and Rapist” or better known as “The Scarborough Rapist.” This essay will examine Paul Bernardo’s case from beginning to end, and also prove why he is properly labeled as a psychopath.
