Letter From Birmingham Jail By Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr., an activist and leader for the civil rights movement, wrote the Letter from Birmingham Jail and gave the famous “I Have A Dream” speech. While the letter is not as publicly acknowledged today, Dr. Kings speech will go down in history as one of the most influential and well-remembered speeches of all time. In Dr. Kings letter from Birmingham Jail, he addresses a group of men criticizing his actions in Birmingham. While holding his ground, Dr. King expresses his concerns using respectful words while providing straightforward examples of what they accused him of, and why they are wrong in those accusations.

King is an inspiring piece of literature that has had a significant impact on history. Throughout the letter, he lists the criticisms of fellow clergymen who believed his peaceful protests were causing a dispute among many people. He wrote, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere,” a phrase that has influenced many individuals to stand and speak up for what’s right. Dr. King’s arguments to support his case for civil rights were both powerful and effective. He in addition wrote, “A just law is a man-made code that squares with the moral law or the law of God.”

Dr. King decided to take action and stand up for equal rights. The equal rights movement led by Martin Luther King Jr., would challenge people’s beliefs, as well as their character. Dr. King had a dream that all people colored or not would be able to live together in this world in harmony. Martin Luther King Jr, states himself, “No, no we are not satisfied, and we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.” This quote from the “I Have a Dream Speech,” is telling us why not one person should be glad with their situation, until justice has been put into place and you are satisfied with the outcome.

Dr. King answered the “Macedonian call” of injustice that was going around. Dr. King uses a peaceful approach to counter attack the injustice and help the Negro community rise up. According to paragraph 10, “ we must see the need of having nonviolent gadflies to create the kind of tension in society that will help men to rise from the dark depths of prejudice and racism to the majestic heights of understanding and brotherhood”. “Go back to Mississippi, go back to Alabama, go back to South Carolina, go back to Georgia, go back to Louisiana, go back to the slums and ghettos of our northern cities, knowing that somehow this situation can and will be changed. Let us not wallow in the valley of despair.” (King). King calms the African Americans who are being oppressed by using the words, “this situation can and will be changed.” and “Let us not wallow in the valley of despair.” which gives them hope that there will be a new day when a change will take place.

A quote from the text is when King states, “ With this faith we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day” (line 10). King is describing how people should always have faith in order to make a change. Therefore, this evidence indicates how America is progressing to freedom and equality by working together no matter what and never losing hope to achieve a dream for everyone to have freedom. In Dr. Martin Luther king Jr.’s speech “ I Have a Dream” shows how people are joining together to have more freedom and equality.

Martin Luther King was an African American civil rights activist who embraced the belief that all people, regardless their race, are equal. He spent the majority of his life working to improve the life of many black Americans. He also showed up wherever there was discrimination, protest, and injustice. The "Letter from Birmingham Jail" and the "I Have a Dream" speech are two of Dr. King's most well-known writings. Both writings have a lot of figurative language and make logical and emotional appeals.

“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy” (King, Jr.). Martin Luther King Jr. exceeded this “measure of a man” during his civil rights acts as a strong soldier in a very volatile time. During this time of “challenge and controversy” King made himself heard in his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. In some of his civil rights acts that occurred in Birmingham, resulted in him ending up in jail. During his time in jail, he wrote his also famous “Letter From Birmingham Jail.”

Even after all the injustices done to the black population of the United Sates, Dr. King is calling for them to set aside violence, bitterness, and hatred. He wants them to fight for their equality peacefully. According to Dr. King, this is the best way to stop violence. One side must step up and act peacefully in order for violence to end.

From 1954-1968 one of the most memorable movements in history took place and will not be forgotten is the civil rights movement. Martin Luther King Jr. is one of the many greats remembered and recognized in the movement for being an influential leader of his time. Having given over 2000 speeches, MLK(Martin Luther King) has one particular speech that stands out from the many and it is his “I Have A Dream” speech. MLK’s message being about peace, unity, fairness and freedom for and to all people shines through in this speech.

Martin Luther King’s speech, “I Have a Dream” is vastly recognized as one of the best speeches ever given. His passionate demand for racial justice and an integrated society became popular throughout the Black community. His words proved to give the nation a new vocabulary to express what was happening to them. Martin was famously a pacifist, so in his speech, he advocated peaceful protesting and passively fighting against racial segregation.
