Meriwether Lewis and William Clark were asked by the President at the time, Thomas Jefferson, to take an expedition to find a route across the continent. Lewis and Clark went on with the expedition down the Mississippi River with a few helpers. They were given many goals from Thomas Jefferson, such as finding a water route to the Pacific Ocean, studying plants and animals on the way, and to find and make peace with Native Americans. This journey across the Mississippi affected the United States in many …show more content…
They began the journey around St. Louis, Missouri, in May 1804. The way there gave them harsh weathers, injuries, illnesses, and hunger. Their journey was long, but eventually they found a way to the Pacific Ocean in November of 1805. When they got there Lewis and Clark made camp in which is now Oregon. They also moved into a fort, Fort Clatsop, where they would stay to check over their data on the way there. On their way back they split up so that they can find more land quicker and to find a faster way back home. “The Lewis and Clark Expedition spanned 8,000 mi (13,000 km) and three years, taking the Corps of Discovery, as the expedition party was known, down the Ohio River, up the Missouri River, across the Continental Divide, and to the Pacific Ocean.” This expedition was about 8,000 miles and almost costed them their lives, but when Lewis and Clark made it back on their way to the capital, the people were proud of them and celebrated them. Their discovery of finding a fast route to the Pacific Ocean has changed the way of transportation, trade, and territorial …show more content…
On their journey to find a route to the Pacific Ocean, they did encounter Native Americans. They found many Native tribes, the Mandans provided them with supplies for winter. Lewis and Clark helped the Natives by giving them all the new machinery and other stuff that they did not have. There was a very special Native American who helped Lewis and Clark on their journey to the Pacific Ocean, her name was Sacagawea. She was a Shoshone Indian and married to a man named Charbonneau, those two went on with Lewis and Clark on the journey to help. Sacagawea provided them with horses and many guidance since she knew more of the West than Lewis and Clark. Lewis and Clark discovering and making peace with the Native Americans was a very important time because they can now collide areas, trade, and much more. Lewis and Clark’s expeditions was much easier and quicker with the help of some tribes and especially Sacagawea. Without them discovering the Native Americans, we might have never made peace with them or it could have taken year to do that. Since then Americans have gained a lot of experience with lifestyle, medicine, weaponry, hunting, and much
In Captain Lewis and Clark’s famous expedition, they successfully made it across the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Ocean, opening the previously occupied western region for trade routes. Their unforgettable adventure led to the first reports of the American West. Over the course of the exhibition Lewis and Clark interacted with almost 50 different tribes. The trail of tears, fewer than 10 tribes were interacted with and they were just forced to move.
Lewis and Clark had a profound impact on the historical development of the United States, expanding the nation's understanding of its geography, and shaping the country's connection with Native Americans. The Geography of the Louisiana Purchase led to the development of many things. After realizing that the Northwest Passage didn’t exist, they
Being the president, Jefferson had wanted the recently gained land to be explored to be aware of what it contained. As a result, the United States' government provide money to Meriwether Lewis and William Clark for exploration. This was known as the Lewis and Clark Expedition which had taken place from May 1804 to November 1805 when Lewis and Clark explored the territory. Stated by Heather LeBlanc, “Along the way they charted trails, mapped river and mountain ranges, collected samples and wrote descriptions of unfamiliar plants and animals, and recorded facts about the Native American tribes they encountered along their journey.” The discovery of these untapped resources allowed the Americans to make profit by selling them to other country’s that did not contain them.
According to the documentary View From the Shore: Native American Perspectives On the Lewis and Clark Expedition, they talk about how the Native Americans “...told them the riverways, and gave them maps.”. This tells me that the land they were travelling had already been discovered. One of the biggest arguments that Lewis and Clark helped was that they had learned the land, and potential places to set up settlements, but they could’ve easily just learned all of that knowledge from the Natives, but they went the long way and “discovered” it, when they couldn’t have even have “discovered” anything without help of the Native Americans. And you can’t say that they couldn’t have just asked the Natives because of the language barrier, because they had
Undaunted Courage by Steven Ambrose is written about the exploration of the West by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. Thomas Jefferson, president of the United States, decided to send Lewis on this exploration, and Lewis chose to take Clark along with him. Many people criticized Jefferson because westward expansion had been tried before and failed. Others argued that he shouldn’t be allowed to purchase land with their tax dollars. Ambrose argues that Jefferson made the correct decision in choosing Lewis to explore the land that makes up Louisiana, Arkansas, parts of northeastern Texas, Oklahoma, eastern Colorado, and Minnesota (Kindle Locations 92-93).
On May 14, 1804, Captain Meriwether Lewis and Co-Captain William Clark as well as forty-three other members consisting of brave soldiers, slaves, and interpreters set out to discover what was in the newly bought land from the recent Louisiana Purchase. This expedition would later be called the Lewis and Clark expedition. The Lewis and Clark expedition was a frontier in history because it found new information on plants and animals, developed a better understanding of native American tribes, and assisted in mapping out the newly purchased land from the Louisiana Purchase. The Lewis and Clark expedition was a journey undertaken by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark in the early 1800s.
The group is very low on supplies, Lewis and Clark use Sacagawea to negotiate trade between an Indian tribe led by her brother, for the supplies that they would need to continue. Additional help would come to them from the Nez Perce' tribe when the Corps of Discovery crossed the largest portion of the Rocky Mountains. When they reached the Pacific Ocean, looked south of the Columbia River to find a place to stay for the winter. There they built Fort Clatsop and waited out the winter. Traveling back, Lewis and Clark split the group into two, Lewis going on to explore the Marias River.
There are many ways to prove that the expedition was challenging. In 1804, Thomas Jefferson appointed two men, Merriwether Lewis and William Clark, and ordered them to find a direct waterway to the Pacific Ocean, create friendly relationships with Native Americans, and to record the geography of the land, animals, and plants. Lewis and Clark took a group of about 40 people and the group was called the Corps of Discovery.
On May 2, 1803, President Thomas Jefferson doubled the size of the United States through a treaty with Napoleon Bonaparte that negotiated the possession of the territory west of the Mississippi River, alias the Louisiana Purchase. Adamant on finding a viable waterway that connected the Missouri River to the Pacific in hopes of strengthening commerce, Jefferson appointed Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to venture into the uncharted region. Although the desired water route proved to be nonexistent, the Corps of Discovery Expedition managed to redeem itself by bringing insight into the economic potential and characteristics of the land as well as endless encounters with the land's flora, fauna, and natives. Preliminary Preparations Jefferson's resolution when it came to the unearthing of the unprecedented secrets held by the western part of North America was implacable.
In this essay I will be discussing about the Exploration of Lewis and Clark. William Clark and Meriwether Lewis made discoveries of new species of new plants and animals, their expedition began on August 31,1803,Clark had 5 older brothers and 3 older sisters,Lewis was named governor for his expedition, and they both found ways to travel in the Pacific ocean. This essay will also give a lot of detail on the Expedition of Lewis and Clark. Lewis and Clark traveled by boat, foot, and on horses. They also worked for Thomas Jefferson on the Louisiana Purchase.
The expedition encountered many tribes that helped them and gave them shelter, food, weapons, etc. From one tribe they met Sacagawea and Toussaint Charbonneau. They were interpreters and helped the tribe deal with exchanging good with other tribes. The expedition was able to exchange goods along the way for item that would help them on their
People normally wouldn’t think about the importance that two people had on this world from over 200 years ago. Have you ever thought about the impact that these two men, Lewis and Clark had on our world, and how they might’ve changed things for the United States? Most likely not. These two men set out on a journey that lasted 2 years and 4 months to search for a land route to the Pacific, to strengthen American claims to the Oregon territory, also to gather more information about the inhabitants and country of the Far West. You may not think these two men have any importance to today but, they discovered many things that this world knows today.
Members chosen for the expedition were sought after for skills that included hunting, blacksmithing, and gunsmithing, making United States Army soldiers a good option for crew who traveled by land, water and horseback, for nearly 8,000 miles over mountains, through plains and by rivers (The Lewis and Clark Expedition, 2016). The success of the Lewis and Clark expedition was important to science, as they made important observations about the land of North America that lead to creation of maps with Captain Clark having the duty of mapping the landscape because of his experience: the result of maps made by Clark became one of the most important achievements of the western exploration. (The Lewis and Clark Expedition, 2016). The scientific information collected on geography, meteorology, cultures, and animal life and plant life were greatly important to the nation (Corps of Discover, 2016). The trip also was partially useful in creating peaceful relations with the American Indians in territories of the Northwest, although not all tribes were accepting of the gestures, giving gifts was important to building peaceful relationships with the American Indians (The Corp of Discovery, 2016).
Imagine a world where Natives were hostile towards everyone. If Lewis and Clark treated the Indians unfairly this would undoubtedly be the case. Luckily, during the expedition Lewis and Clark and the rest of The Corps of Discovery treated the Natives very fairly. Lewis and Clark treated the natives fairly because, they gave them gifts, they spoke respectfully, and were not violent. To begin with, they gave them gifts.
Lewis and Clark Meriwether Lewis and William Clark were on an expedition lead by Lewis on the orders of Thomas Jefferson the president at the time. The expedition began in 1804 and it lasted two years because of the length and harsh travel. On there way they met an Indian named Sacajawea she helped take Lewis and Clark to their destination. Sacajawea was part of the Mandan tribe with her husband a fur trapper. There expedition became very famous and now I will tell you about it.
