Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) is reflected as the forefathers of psychology and founder of psychoanalysis. Based on Freud’s theories, psychoanalytic therapy is a type of treatment that tends to observe at the background from early childhood to perceive if these situations have affected the individual’s life, or to current issues. This therapy discovers how the unconscious mind empowers thoughts and behaviors, with the purpose of offering insight and resolution to the person seeking therapy. Hence this will be a difficulty for analyst and professional, as they will then have to bring this matter to the conscious mind of the patients. This could also cause tension and opposition by patients during their treatments. This opposition is called resistance. (Nunberg, NCBI, 1943)
Therefore patients and analyst have to come to an agreement to be able to solve the conflict. By assisting patient realizes the unidentified field, analyst encourages patient to face the supposed dangers. In psychoanalytic not all patients respond positively to the influence of the analyst. That is due to an unconscious shifting of conversion of emotional attachments. Thus, analyst must give a patient any indulgence; he may wish or deem and from him. Development theories broadly fall into five generally recognised psychological perspectives on behaviour: psychodynamic, behaviourist, cognitive, humanist and ecosystemic. Development theorists, many of whom were born in the mid-1800s to the early 1900s, developed a range of theories upon which modern-day practitioners have then continued to build, each using elements of other theories to refine and develop their own practice. In fact, present day school support systems offer elements of all of the following theories, trying to find a balance between historical perspectives and the challenges of modern pressures. Psychoanalysis was first introduced by Sigmund Freud and is now known as classical psychoanalysis. The theory, as defined by Sigmund Freud, is the dynamic between underlying forces that determine behavior and personality. DISCUSSION From the beginning, the therapist had to deal with own doubts and anxiety. The therapist had heard a lot about the psychodynamic psychotherapy but this was the first time he conduct the sessions by himself. Unlike pharmacotherapy, there is no standard clinical practice guideline or recommendation for the therapist to refer to or follow. The therapist was worried that he was unable to conduct the therapy effectively and his patient would not benefit from the therapy.
Group members who are frustrated are likely to feel angry. They may pick a target to vent their hostility. The therapeutic process in psychoanalytic therapy focuses on re-creating, analysing, discussing, and interpreting past experiences and on working through defences and resistances that operate at the unconscious level. The working-through process represents the final phase of the analytic group and results in increased consciousness and integration of the self.
Greenberg (1986) believes Freud’s case studies do not place enough stress on revealing the outcome of the treatment and that Freud’s aim was more to illustrate his theoretical points (p.240). In cases, Greenberg asserts that many of the presented cases would not even be considered acceptable examples of psychoanalysis and, in short, that virtually all of the cases studies had basic shortcomings (p.240). Furthermore, many other powerful criticisms about Freud inaccurate and subsequently flawed evidence have been published. These critics contend that Freud’s evidence is flawed due to the lack of an experiment, the lack of a control group, and the lack of observations that went unrecorded (Colby, 1960, p.54).
