Lincoln was quoted in his proclamation speech on the 22nd of September, 1862, when he declared that “all persons held as slaves within said designated States, and parts of States are, and henceforward shall be free.” Abraham Lincoln actually was not concerned about slavery at the time of the Civil War, instead focused on preserving the Union. We can state the obvious, that we are not all perfect, and we certainly say things we don’t mean. Was President Lincoln really a racist? There is documented text that could point evidence that leans in either direction. Things said in the heat of long debates and drawn out conversations that ran for hours, does not make such a monumental man a poor or hypocritical person. Looking at the Constitutional right that “All men are created equal” to the thought that things won’t change without action, and to a man with no moral obligation other than to share his personal option that slavery was wrong, we dive into President Lincoln.

In my opinion, I strongly argue that Lincoln was not racist. He believed that “negro” equality is guaranteed by the laws of God according to Document A. Abraham Lincoln always listened to his people’s desires, even if that meant to shun his own beliefs. His dream was to provide the best equality for his people. Lincoln despised slavery and believed that all African Americans were men and they were all created equal as stated in the US Constitution. Lincoln has done many actions to help his citizens and to gain their equality.

President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated on the evening of April 14, 1865 at a play at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D. C. He was accompanied by his wife, Mary Lincoln, and Major Henry Rathbone and Miss Clara Harris, his future fiancee; the Lincoln’s were in a relatively good mood having ended the civil war. The four sat together in a private balcony box. The murderer, John Wilkes Booth, a famous actor of that play, hated Lincoln’s reforms. At around 10:00 pm, when the play was ending, Booth had walked past Major Henry Rathbone and shot Lincoln in the head. He then cut Rathbone’s arm and lept off to the stage, protecting himself and fleeing from the crime scene.

This document, written by Lincoln, freed all the slaves of the southern states of “rebellion”. This did a few things. It inspired the people of the North to fight harder to end slavery, improving war support among citizens. It also motivated the Confederates to fight harder, because they knew their economy would drop without the institution of slavery. Lastly, it didn’t free the slaves in the border states,

Slavery will always have a negative connotation attached to it but there are underlying forces and events that caused a certain kind of resistance against slavery beginning with The Second Great Awakening, it’s emphasis on reform leading women to speak out, important people who advocated and supported anti-slavery and the colonization of slaves creating little independence for blacks and more opposition of slavery in the U.S. The Second Great Awakening is said to be a starting point to the abolishment of slavery. Due to the fact that this awakening was about religion, it really emphasized the reason why slavery was considered a sin. Emancipation Proclamation, was formed by Abraham Lincoln in 1863, the reason for forming this was to free all slaves that existed in the rebellious states. The Proclamation freed about 3.1 million slaves of the nation's 4 million slaves. Abraham felt that slavery was unjust, however he didn’t see Africans as part of the American society but instead as aliens. The states of America all didn’t feel the same about slavery the world was divide some people believed that slavery was unjust and cruel however the other half felt that this was okay because of the bible and this was just a way of free labor. This was the reason that Abraham Lincoln couldn’t do much about slavery because of the way the Constitution works.

In order to undermine their ability to rebel, legislators deprived slaves of their ability to be literate. The South Carolina Act of 1740, a reaction to the Stono Rebellion, was the first act that limited slaves’ literacy. The Virginia Revised Code of 1819 states that any meetings or schools that teach slaves reading and/or writing “shall be deemed and considered an unlawful assembly” (“Original Documents”). Literacy of slaves was limited in order to take away their sense of possibility and prevent them from advocating for their freedom and equal treatment.

The 19th century was a century full of hatred, cruelty, and especially inconsiderate feelings among the Black lives who inhabited the American country. Slavery was the head of everyone’s thoughts that was the driving force for most political controversies during the 19th century. Slavery is an over complicated, and long-lasting predicament. Arguments that can so long live forever debating whether the right decisions were properly made for the benefit of a few individuals. Blood was spilled during the road of discussion, and feared spread to slaves who vision themselves outside the picture of slavery.

Slavery dates back to the beginning of civilization, and it used to be part of everyday life in the ancient world. Many of us view slavery as unnatural and it causes mixed feelings from the heart of each human being. Slavery caused lot of harm by destroying lives of the people who could have been happy back in the day. The main topic of this paper will be on runaway slaves in Rome who escaped from their owners because they yearned for freedom from slavery. Running away was one of the many ways of resistance by slaves.

Although he was ultimately the one who freed them, we should not forget about the other people who also fought for African Americans. Many American fought long before Licoln's presidency.

During the 19th century most political controversies focused on the issue of slavery, many believed this issue was wicked and cruel and strongly disagreed with the idea of slavery, being active and acceptable. Owning the fact that many disagreed with slavery, the Republican Party announced a speech- all territories of the United States were said to be free and they were entitled to deny anyone who gives any legal existence to slavery in any territory of the United States (Document A). Many important figures in the Republican Party did not agree with nor supported anyone or anything that advocated for slavery. In order to win the war decisively, Abraham Lincoln had almost no choice but to enlist the aid of (previously banned) African American soldiers, and they could only do so by offering blacks their freedom. This was the origin of the Emancipation proclamation. The Emancipation Proclamation, said Alan, was actually a black enlistment proclamation. It didn’t free any slaves at all because the only slaves it liberated were under the jurisdiction of southern plantation owners who had no respect for the Union law anyways.

Abraham Lincoln did believe that status quo should be maintained because of his belief that slave states should remain slave states and free states should remain free states, that slavery should not extend into states that it is not already in. In a letter to Alexander H. Stephens, Lincoln assures the people of the South that there is no cause to fear that his “Republican administration would, directly or indirectly, interfere with the slaves, or with them about the slaves” (12). He is telling them that they will be allowed to keep their status on slaves, and that they should not worry that his administration will change that. This will therefore make the nation partially slave. But it will also be partially free as well; all new states/territories
