Learning to Listen “They refused to listen,” always seems to be a recurring statement during times of war, whether the war transpires inside oneself or in the real world (Wiesel 7). Listening has always been a troublesome area for the human brain because heaps of people have trust issues regarding others thoughts. The Holocaust is a prime example of the lack of listening skills from the world; for instance, the United States was aware of the plan of the Nazi’s and did not listen to the information, simply because they did not think it was possible (“The United States and the Holocaust.”). The writing of the memoir Night is due to Elie Wiesel’s lack of patience towards everyone’s opinions about the Holocaust when they did not experience it. He had enough of the rumors about what the experience was like, so he wrote his experience to tell people his truth. He also thought it was time for people to listen; as it is always said, heaps of people do not know how to listen correctly and he was tired of that. He wants the world to understand the pain he was enduring every day and the mental struggle of watching death occur every second. He wants people to remember the harsh words and actions that were occurring right before the Holocaust towards the Jewish community, so that if people see it again they can take care as soon as possible. Likewise, Benigni’s purpose was to also make people listen. He felt that the topic was important and thought that people would listen through a film. The world should know that protecting a child can be hard, but it can be worth it. Lastly, he wants people to understand that sacrifices come with love. These stories recognize the mistakes made in history and allow people to learn from the mistakes, so that this will not happen ever again. History may be in the past, but it can become the future if people do not correct the mistakes. There are various types of relationships that people see in the stories, but the main message is to always cherish those relationships, considering they can be taken away in a snap of a finger. Relationships will be difficult during rough times, so do not give up and always stay true to those relationships. The stories teach people that being human means they should make mistakes, but learning from them is the most important lesson.
