In “Literacy in Three Metaphors,” Sylvia Scribner tries to define and explain what literacy really is. Scribner says that literacy as a notion may be defined in many different ways, and I agree with this statement. She states that it depends on a particular society and certain standards of this society. Scribner offers the solution to the problem of defining literacy. This solution consists of examining and discussing the three metaphors: literacy as adaptation, literacy as power and literacy as a state of grace. In these three metaphors literacy is defined in different contexts. Rose says that it was low level classes and he was placed in these classes accidentally, but he decided to stay there. Basically, he talks about his classmates and education environment in this school. As I understood from the text, the education environment was not good to grow good students. Rose explains that his teachers were not so interested in teaching and they used physical violence to control students. As for the students, many of them had negative behaviour and no desire to study, but Rose noted their true personalities and says that they weren't just troublemakers. Also, the author says that in his life disaster happened: his father died. This time, a new teacher came at Rose's school. Rose admired this teacher, and understood that he was the best teacher in this school. Through hard work and the support of this new teacher, Rose ended up going to college and discovered who he really was. I think this article is about motivation in school, because one teacher and his support changed Rose's life. As for the other students, they just didn't have the aim in life, and that is why they chose to not learn as well as they could and felt that they only wanted to be average. When someone is guided in their literacy development and they are impacted in a positive way, they often can become more successful in the field of literacy, which can lead you to a successful life with good social standings, understandings, and power. When someone has what literacy scholar Deborah Brandt calls a “literacy sponsor” they will tend to become more successful in their experiences with literacy. Sponsors of literacy, according to Brandt, are beneficial because they are well educated, have experience in the field of literacy, and are willing to help others improve and let them into the world of literacy. Jack MacFarland pushed Rose and recognized the greatness within Rose. When MacFarland discovered that Rose was put into Vocational Ed in error, he had Rose transferred to College Prep classes. Through doing this MacFarland gained Rose’s trust. Rose respected and looked up to MacFarland. MacFarland become more than just a teacher, he became someone that Rose trusted and a mentor.
Response to “I Just Wanna Be Average" by Mike Rose Had Rose and her mother been educated enough, they could have a voice to raise concerns about Rose’s marks. The author seems to suggest that the teachers were responsible for his underperformance. The author feels that parental and teacher responsibility on his part could have helped understanding what discipline is before going to college. However, it is also possible that he did not try hard enough to be disciplined. Nonetheless, Rose is right that environment plays a bigger role in what an individual eventually becomes in adult life (Munns et all, 2013).
In “I Just Wanna Be Average,” Mike Rose explains the experience being part of a school system that had no prior knowledge to have educators to teach students. Rose supports his claims by describing the different situations he had to encounter with the lack of the school system, the hopelessness of the teachers and his peers, that lead those students with no support to lead them in a direction of success. Rose purpose is to point out that; all that it was needed was a teacher that cared enough to teach and to influence those students to succeed and to never hinder the student’s learning experience because anything is possible with an little of an encouragement. The history of my literacy has been a long road of a frustration and learned lessons. As a child, I was a bit of a loner so reading and writing were the closest thing to a social life for me. The things that I bottled up inside came out through my writing and it became somewhat of a pass time for me. As long I could remember literacy as has been an important value for me in my life because from very young age I got express my true self without being judged by the outside. Since reading is always a part of our everyday routine, we have lost the idea that when it comes to learning how to read, we must start from the basics. From reading a case study, to reading a letter from a loved one, comprehension, phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and oral language are the six essential components of reading.
