In line with this assertion, this paper will serve as an analysis for Faulkner’s A Rose for Emily. First-Person Plural Nouns It can be observed that in the starting paragraph of Faulkner’s A Rose for Emily, the author used an unnamed first-person narrator which speaks in behalf of the people in Jefferson, relating with what they know or believe. For example, the unnamed narrator mentioned that “When Miss Emily Grierson died, our whole town went to the funeral” (Faulkner 1). The evident use of first-person plural nouns throughout the story indicates that the narrator tries to represent the consciousness of the town. The Story’s Narrative Sequence It is noticeable that the narrative sequence of the story is not in a chronological order. The reader can only know the story of Miss Emily as he visits or lives in Jefferson. As a matter of fact, in the story, when Miss Emily died, the townspeople have discussed how strange and sad her life was. At her death, a gruesome sight is unfolded when her lover of over forty years ago is found decomposed in her upstairs room. Her article begins with a short summary of William Faulkner’s life, from his birth in the South in 1897 to his Nobel Prize in 1949. As his history draws to a close Nicole begins to shed light on the story itself and how his past is a heavy influence in his writing.
The story is not easy to read and even harder to understand due to the many time jumps, one must take time and not rush the reading, in order to not miss important details. The narrative perspective is also unfamiliar: Faulkner uses an anonymous first-person narrator, who never appears in the first person singular, but is present as a “we” in a sense, I suppose one could therefore even speak of a we-perspective. Faulkner does not tell the story in a traditional order, this can be seen right from the start, from the fact that he begins, so to speak, with the end of the story: the death of Emily. Starting from the end, the narrator keeps making different flashbacks and leaps in time. It almost seems as if he time jumps, every time he remembers a new (old) detail/part of the story.
He states that the constant back and forth change of view the narrator uses justifies them as the ghost that William Faulkner intended. I am not as convinced. There are too many questions that arise while reading “A Rose For Emily” that direct my attention onto an actual character in the story as being the ghost. The story begins with everyone at Emily Grierson’s funeral in her home. It is stated that nobody has been inside the house for the last decade except for her only servant, Tobe (Faulkner 133-34).

An analysis of William Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily” will explain how Faulkner portrays the change in the social structure of the American South in the early twentieth century as a change from Old South to New South by showing the Griersons no longer hold power, the changes in the town, and Emily’s denial to change. In the New South the Griersons no longer hold power. Emily believes that her family still holds the power that they had in the Old South, so she never payed her taxes.
