Throughout the entire novel, the author’s use of literary devices is very clear. These literary devices, specifically similes and personification, help the reader get a better idea of the exact sounds and feelings which will allow them to know what it feels like to be there in that moment. “ I stood there, trying to think of a comeback, when suddenly, I heard a whooshing sound, like the sound you get when you open a vacuum-sealed can of peanuts. In Bless me Ultima, Antonio struggles to choose what path in life he wants to take. Antonio’s parents come from very different families and both think Antonio should follow the lifestyle of their family’s side. Antonio’s mother wants her son to follow in the footsteps of the Lunas and become a servant of God, a priest. On the other hand, his father dreams of him and his son venturing to California and starting a new life full of adventure. His parents’ constant disagreement about Antonio’s destiny causes an internal conflict that wreaks havoc on him throughout the book.

Throughout the novel, the author Edward Bloor uses literary devices such as similes to make the readers visualize the descriptive situations in the story. These similes describe to the reader how different occurrences relate to other actions, objects, or living things.

“Blessing” is a poem by Imtiaz Dharker. It is set in Dharavi, a shanty town on the outskirts of Bombay. In these areas, temperatures can go above 40oC during dry season and water is generally scarce. The poem describes an incident where a pipe that carries water to the city bursts in the slums and the whole community rushes to collect the water. Dharker uses various poetic techniques such as simile, onomatopoeia, alliteration, imagery and metaphor to portray how the people in this poor community sees water - as a precious divine gift from god, a blessing that has been bestowed upon them.
