3.2.4. Hypertension Finally, concerning patients with hypertension 1 article systematizes the results of 12 RCT using devices with automated data transmission, and video-conference. The article reports a significantly improved of the proportion of participants with controlled blood pressure compared to those who received usual care, but the authors conclude that more interventions are required and cost-effectiveness of the intervention should also be assessed [RHT1]. 4. Discussion According to the findings of the systematic review reported in the present article, diabetes, congestive heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and hypertension are the most relevant chronic conditions where technologies for aging in place supporting …show more content…
However, since the authors did not perform quantitative analyses, the resulting bias is estimated to be limited. Despite these possible biases, the authors believe that the systematically collected data contribute with evidence to the understanding of the use of technologies for aging in place to support home monitoring of patients with chronic conditions. In parallel with this study, the authors have used a similar methodology to analyze the role of technologies for aging in place to empower patients with chronic diseases. However, due to space limitations, the authors decide not to report the results in this article. Therefore, these results will be object of a future publication. Also as a future work, since this study is part of the medium-term project that aims to systematize the evidence of current technologies for aging in place in different aspects of the human functioning, further studies will be implemented, namely to analyze how technologies for ageing in place are being used to support daily activities and social participation of older
. Here is where I come in; graduating in 1998 from the title of a Medical Assistant II to State Certified, nurse and HHA nurse of 19 years. I have had the chance to operate multiple machines from the EKG heart monitor on down to the blood pressure cuff. However, people have been using devices in their homes for many years’ due to disorder like cardiovascular, respiratory, oral, gastrointestinal, and amputee’s have the independent security of using devices in their home.
Staples & Earle (2008) used a phenomenology research design, where they used a convenience sample of CHF patients to determine effective technologies for monitoring patients with heart failure admissions and mortality. The effectiveness of CHF patients through the use of telephonic assessments and interventions was implemented. Congestive Heart Failure study participants (n=591) were managed by a team of registered nurses and nurse practitioners. Data was collected using a telephone log and appropriate medical protocols were provided. Data was analyzed; determining frequency of calls, level of care required and scope of practice needed to ensure proper care of the patients.
Unit 14 resub: Alternative health approaches to health care are analysed using a broad range of of research to get various concepts and understanding of the CAM therapies. In 1986 Aakster did a research on how CAM therapies varied fro the traditional biomedical treatments. In his conclusion he found three models that suited medical perspective as listed below; (ii). The pharmaceutical model believes that disease is treated using technology and drugs. (ii).
There has been an extensive change in the U.S. demographics within last 50 years. According to Center for Health Workforce Studies (2006), in 2020, there will be about 54 million Americans above the age of 65 years as compared to 35 million in 2000. This number is expected to rise further at the rate of 12.5% to 20%, which means by 2050 every 1 in 5 American will be above 65 years (p. 2). This exhibits how baby boomer generation will have a significant impact on the current long-term care system. Long-term care is defined as the continuum of services framed to support the needs of people with chronic health problems and physical limitations.
"It's much cheaper to keep people well than it is to treat them when they're sick," he says. "Part of wellness will be monitoring what's specifically important about each patient, like bathroom scales for congestive heart failure patients or glucometers for diabetics that transmit data directly to their EHRs." -John D. Halamka, MD, MS(McBride). That being said the Electronic Health Record or EHR has made monitoring health even easier with the ability for patients to access their records from home, email their doctors among other
Over the past decade, significant efforts have been made from Ontario government to increase healthcare resources, with the goal of improving access, and reducing hospital readmissions for patients with chronic diseases. As the population ages and skyrocketing healthcare costs, more patient care are pushing from the acute hospital setting out into the community/home. A novel approach to community-based care is needed for improving the health outcomes of these patients, and reducing the healthcare costs. CareKit Health Corp. has built a powerful platform for care coordination and home healthcare that integrate wearable, sensors, voice technology & intuitive mobile apps and desktop interfaces for patients, clinicians and healthcare administrators.
It got me thinking if many elderly are expose to cell phones how come the woman that ask me to feel my phone said was heavy. Either she is not exposed to technology as much just a T.V. When I looked around I did not see much technology things for them to use like laptops or IPads. Nora, my instructor, told me that many seniors have physical conditions and health issues. “Around two in five seniors… have disability, handicap, or chronic disease that prevents them from fully participating in many common daily activities” (Smith, par.

The majority of seniors would prefer to live at home as long as possible, even if they have a long-term health condition that limits their independence. Home care or aging at home is beneficial to the public health care system because it is generally less costly than hospital or hospice care. To live at home safely and maintain a good level of well-being, however, seniors frequently require help with their daily activities such as personal care, medical care, household maintenance and transportation. With the growing number of seniors in Canada it will be necessary for the government to introduce more social programs to support caregivers and seniors in their homes. Many studies show that seniors who receive social support and professional home care services
“Technology and the Future of Healthcare.” Journal of Public Health Research, U.S. National Library of Medicine, 1 Dec. 2013,
Sridhar, R., Naughton, B., (2010), stated that the U.S. population is aging and associated with this group is an increase in the incidence and prevalence of chronic diseases, with consequential increase in health care expenditure. They stated that in 2000, the total Medicare expenditure was $239.5 billion. By the year 2010, this expenditure is estimated to increase to $519 billion. The concept of aging in place is one method proposed to reduce cost, while maintaining the quality of life for the elderly. The elderly will be supported in their environment of their choice while avoiding institutionalization and or nursing home
(Marieb and Hoehn, 2016) In my clinical setting, it was expected that a level of proffesional protocol is carried out for a correct, and safe arterial reading while maintaining a hygienic and aseptic approach that is safe, and reduces the risk of detrimental harm to myself as a healthcare professional and to the patient in my care. Bp is read from patients as a matter of determining illness by monitoring what is known as a NEWS score, presenting a validating number to recognise the level of health of an individual. (Royal College of Nursing, 2015) Hypertension, high blood pressure, or hypotension, low blood pressure, can be a sign of a decreased state of health for my patients, therefore it was imperative that a bp exam is carried out in the correct way for the
Longer life expectancy is arguably one of humanity biggest achievements. Medical progress, public-health efforts, rising standards of living, better education, healthier nutrition and a more hygienic lifestyle in the past century lead to an substantial increase in life expectancy worldwide.(1) In developed countries around 30 years in life expectancy have been gained, in these societies the oldest-old group – i.e., those aged 80 and over – have been the most rapidly expanding segment of the population over the past decades.(2,3) It is expected that by 2050, the worldwide population of older adults (more than 60 years old) may grow to nearly 2 billion, with 80% of that population living in developing countries.(4) However, humanity’s big achievement has its pitfalls; the years gained in life expectancy might be years with disability, since disability increases with age, and therefore people are not only living longer but are also experiencing morbidity and disability over a longer period.(5) Worldwide, the trend toward longer life has been accompanied with an increasing prevalence of diseases in older adults, and decline in mobility, independence and other functions that are essential for a good quality of life.(6)
A sedentary life, unhealthy diet, tobacco consumption, excess alcohol, stress, overeating, canned foods & beverages and high consumption of certain ingredients like salt are linked to high blood pressure. The solution is simple but not easy. A more natural lifestyle. To get you started, here are some Prakratik (natural) ways... Go Sleep: 6-8 hours of sleep every night is the bare minimum to ensure that you do not lose sleep over hypertension.
The influence of age on quality of life can be due to a direct effect of ageing and indirectly through the effect of ageing on factors that influence quality of life. The question, ‘all things remaining constant across the lifespan what is the effect of ageing on quality of life?’ has gained relevance as the nature of ageing itself is changing. From being marginal and dependent, the older person has become active and flourishing as a new life course periodie, the third age, the period between exit from labor force and the beginning of physical dependency has emerged. A recent development is a new measure of quality of life, which was developed with a strong underpinning theory relevant to the Third Age, distinguishing it from many other measures of quality of
