Summer Reading: Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy
Summary of section one
Turner Buckminster is the son of the new minister of Phippsburg, Maine. He just moved from Boston, however he had a really hard time to fit in this community. In Phippsburg, people play baseball in a totally different way, Turner didn’t know how to swing the baseball bat properly. In this way, a churlish boy named Willis Hurd intimidated him when he went to play baseball. In addition, Turner was punished to read books to Ms. Cobb every day since he threw rocks at her house. As for Turner’s father who always had the impassive visage, felt ashamed of his son.

This goes to show the tremendous toll slavery had on many families; a mother could kill her baby to give them a better life. Nat’s “owner,” Benjamin Turner, gave him the opportunity to learn how to read and write. (“Nat Turner’s Rebellion”) It became apparent from a young age that Nat was a very intelligent child. As he grew older, Nat Turner became more involved in religion, which he often practiced with his fellow slaves.
From the beginning, Douglass’ life was a struggle; especially since his first master, Captain Anthony, and overseer, Mr. Plummer, were both merciless beings. The title “Captain” was thought to have come from Anthony’s time sailing the Chesapeake Bay. Described as “a cruel man, hardened by a long life of slaveholding”, Captain Anthony would often take sadistic pleasure in torturing Douglass’s Aunt by tying her up and whipping her until she bled. Mr. Plummer also took part in these heinous acts. He was “a miserable drunkard, a profane swearer, and a savage monster.”

No one can defeat Death There once was a young woman, who strived to be immortal, this caused her to bind herself away from the world for years. She decided one day that she had conquered death by changing her fate and goes to venture the town where she met a strange man, who insults her, filled with anger she decides to go after him where she faces death. A very similar situation is portrayed in “The Masque of the Red Death” with the character Prince Prospero, who believes that he has changed his fate by locking himself in his palace for years but this doesn’t end well for him as he faces death in his own home. In “The Masque of the Red Death”, written by Edgar Allen Poe, irony and symbolism to is used prove that death is inevitable.
In Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God, the long-lasting effects of slavery have taken a toll on Janie Crawford. Janie’s grandmother was raped by her master and had a child named Leafy. Leafy, although not born into slavery, endured a similar fate, which led her to run away, leaving her mother to raise her child, Janie. Janie’s appearance, showing strong European features, was both praised and shamed by society. This double standard was created by racism and was able to remain present due to segregation.
Long ago, racism was very common in the United States. In Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy by Gary D. Schmidt, Turner Buckminster, and Lizzie Bright have to endure a racist town against Negros. Turner and Lizzie are both hated by the town, nevertheless, Turner's and Lizzie's understanding of racism is completely different. Turner and Lizzie are both hated by the town for certain reasons. For example, when Mr. Stonecrop asked if Turner to sell Mrs. Cobb's house and Turner refused, Mr. Stonecrop says,"You'll regret living in a town where no one wants you."

Jessica Mitford takes a bold stand against the funeral industry and states that people are “blissfully ignorant” (Mitford 310) on preserving people. Ultimately, Jessica Mitford’s argumentative essay is successful due to her very somber but informative and organized tone, her style using dark vivid imagery and quotations make her claims credible. Throughout the narrative, the author includes his personal stories about experiencing the violence of slavery first-hand. For example, on page 20, he writes about the first time he witnessed a slave, his own aunt, getting the whip. “The louder she screamed, the harder he whipped; and where the blood ran fastest, there he whipped longest…I remember the first time I ever witnessed this horrible exhibition… It struck me with awful force. It was the blood-stained gate, the entrance to the hell of slavery…” The author including his experience of his aunts whipping, in detail, appeals to the emotions of the reader.
Throughout history, many influential writers have used literature to teach people about human nature; these writers used their works improve the morals of humanity. In the 18th century, Romantic and Gothic writers used many literary elements to make their works more meaningful. These included figurative language, symbolism, imagery, allusions, mood and tone to enhance the theme in their stories. Two men who did this were the Gothic writer Edgar Allan Poe, and the Gothic romance writer Nathaniel Hawthorne. The works “The Masque of the Red Death” by Poe, and “The Minister’s Black Veil” by Hawthorne, are examples of using literary elements to enhance theme.
Steph Craps read Dabydeen’s Turner, as a poem emphasizing the closing of the gap between the past and the present where the injustices of the past usurp the possibility for mobility and agency of present and future generations. Craps derived the hauntological aspect of Dabydeen’s Turner, where the victims of past injustices hover and haunt the present in their search for justice. David Dabydeen’s Turner, is a depiction of a drowning slave’s failed attempt to “fabricate a new self and a new history” within a society that is “trapped by the powerful forces of the past” (Craps 2010
Through personification the speaker depicts death as a gentlemen, and not someone who brutally takes our lives quickly, but in a courteous manner.
