He insulted Piggy by addressing him as “Fatty! (Golding 71)”. Jack then furthers his intimidation by hitting Piggy upside the head which lead the boy to yell “My Specs!” (Golding 71). Jack's fundamental needs were not being met, which led to this behavioral outburst.

Jack stood over him. His voice was vicious with humiliation. … and Jack smacked Piggy’s head. Piggy’s glasses flew off … ” (Golding 71).

Jack probably did not think twice and was responsive to the first thing he knew would hurt Piggy. Jack most likely did not think about the long term effect it would have on Piggy. Also, when the boys left the fire when they were in charge of being beside it to keep it going, as a rescue signal. They probably did not think about the danger it could have caused, also. In the book Jack is always making fun of Piggy. Jack was being rude to Piggy and saying his fat behind doesn’t do nothing to help while piggy was trying to talk. However some of the time Piggy stands up for himself, “I got the conch … you let me speak!”(Golding 33). Piggy illustrates how its not easy to have integrity. This is because whenever he tries to talk the others mainly Jack just tell him to shut up or take his glasses from him making him feel uncomfortable.

When Ralph found out he was furious with Jack. “There was a ship. Out there. You said you’d keep the fire going and you let it out! They might have seen us.

Jack was angry and started fighting Ralph. When Piggy tries to talk about starting a fire using his glasses, Roger, one of Jack’s members, uses a lever to roll a massive rock down a hill and smash Piggy. The conch broke into millions of pieces. Knowing that there is not a conch anymore, Ralph and Jack fight again, “Viciously, with full intention, he hurled his spear at Ralph. The point tore the skin and flesh over Ralph’s ribs, then sheared off and fell in the water” (Golding 181).

Author, William Golding, in his novel, "Lord of the Flies," follows a group of British boys who are stranded on an uninhabited island and try to govern themselves. One of the boys, Piggy, is constantly bullied and considered a nuisance by the power-hungry boys on the island. Golding's use of an isolated setting in the midst of the other boys illustrates Piggy's struggle to liberate himself from their oppression. However the need to survive reveals Piggy's inventiveness and rational mindset.

When Jack failed to keep the signal fire going, Ralph scolded him because at the same time the smoke went out, a ship passed by the island. Jack in embarrassment and irritation and, “Ralph made a step forward and Jack smacked Piggy’s head. Piggy’s glasses flew off and tinkled on the rocks. Piggy cried out in terror… “One side’s broken.”’ (Golding, 71).

Piggy is fat, brilliant, lacking in social graces, and wears glasses, in other words the outsider on this island. Due to Piggy being such an foreigner, Jack feels that he is above Piggy, and feels better when he causes Piggy pain and sorrow. For example, “‘You’re talking too much,’ said Jack Merridew. ‘Shut up Fatty,’” (21). In this scene you can see power in Piggy’s lack thereof.

The Lord Of The Flies by William Golding is a book about a plane full of boys crashing on an island. The boys are by themselves no adults so they have to survive on their own and establish their own government. Piggy is one of the first characters we meet as a boy with poor eyesight, a weight problem and asthma so the readers already like him even if no one else likes him. Piggy is the closest thing the boys have to an adult on the island. Throughout the story Piggy embraces the character traits of being intellectually intelligent, Mature and loyal.

From the book, it can be inferred that the boys in Jack’s tribe, including himself, had all agreed, or forced to agree, to kill Piggy. Jack didn’t think of the conch as anything special with meaning anymore. When the conch was smashed into pieces, so was any little hope of civilization. Jack had finally gotten the power that he desperately desired by getting rid of the conch. In the novel “Of Mice and Men” John Steinbeck portrays the theme of social injustice throughout the story in the lives of several characters that include Lennie, Curley’s Wife, and the stable buck, Crooks. All of these characters are mistreated in some way, shape or form. The hardships that these characters faced help guide us to see the social injustice that is prevalent in the story. Lennie is a victim of social injustice due to the fact that he is mentally disabled. He is not treated fairly when he was accused of rape.

The desire for power is one of the strongest human drives. In Lord of The Flies by William Golding there is a constant struggle for power between the main characters, Ralph, Jack, and Piggy. Ralph has power because he was voted chief and uses his power in an ugly way. Jack is struggling to get out of Ralph's power and gain his own power. The boys’ struggle for power is an ugly struggle and the author uses this to demonstrate the ugly struggle for power that is human nature.

One of the times Jack lets the fire go out a ship comes by. Ralph is enraged that Jack didn’t keep the fire going. Piggy is enraged as well. Piggy yells “You and your blood, Jack Merridew! You and your hunting!

As stated before, Piggy is clearly the heaviest of the boys, and more than once, Jack called Piggy “Fatty”(21). In this way, Piggy almost immediately loses power and respect. You can see this when Ralph tells Jack Piggy’s name, but more so in Piggy’s reaction after the fact. Piggy ended up confronting Ralph about how he didn’t want to be called Piggy, but Ralph blatantly disobeyed and told everyone that Piggy is what he was called. In Ralph’s defense, he is “Better Piggy than Fatty” (25).
