Lord Of The Flies Rhetorical Analysis

A Symbolic Moment Arguably, the conch shell is one of the most symbolic items in the novel; the moment Ralph blows into it, the boys are brought together. It is this pivotal moment that makes Ralph appear to be the clear choice for a leader. It is easy to understand why the boys gravitated towards him, their first sight of Ralph was of him sitting, "the conch trailing from one hand, his head bowed on his knees;" (Golding, 19) a clear image of confidence and strength. The boys are easily swayed by his symbolic power and when it comes time to choose between Ralph and Jack, the majority of the boys rush to support Ralph as their leader. Why did they choose Ralph?

The author wrote the two chapters in a chronological order to facilitate the understanding of all the events that occurred in the past. Daschuk used sources such as officials’ reports, statistics, and historical documents to support his opinion and give effect to his text. In chapter 6, he used a table to demonstrate the level of deaths. In addition, he included some pictures in order to demonstrate to the readers physically some aspects of his argument. This technique helps him to convince the readers.

In Lord of the Flies, a group of British boys ended up stranded on a deserted island after their plane crashed. After establishing Ralph as the leader of the boys, he attempts to establish order by assigning roles to everyone and a system in which the holder of the conch may speak during an assembly. However, Jack, the antithesis to Ralph, sets up a hunting culture and disregards the use of the conch, preferring to speak openly, and sets up an authoritarian rule. In both of these groups, both establish right or wrong based on what is deemed beneficial to either Ralph or Jack. While Ralph seeks to uphold democratic values, opting to minimize the amount of time on the island, Jack looks for a more permanent solution through brutality and total power.

And, “The twins lay, astonished, and the tribe stood around them. Jack turned to Ralph and spoke between his teeth. See? They do what I want.” Jack is power hungry and wants to be in control.

It also shows that he is brave enough to go off alone. Knowing that Ralph can not hunt, Jack encourages people to join his pack to hunt for food and kill the beast. As Jack breaks away from the original group, Ralph is losing his best hunter and no longer has anyone to gather food. Now that Jack has left, the harder and longer it will take for the boys to maintain the fire and get rescued off the

Jack was able to get his way and finally convince the group to go with him, and hunt the beast. They didn’t have a clue of what the beast looked like, but went anyways. “‘Supposing the beasts up there?’ Jack brandished his spear. ’We’ll kill it’.

Jack brings up the topic about the beast at an assembly, and makes the little’uns fear the beastie even more. " Bollocks to the rules! We 're strong - we hunt! If there 's a beast, we 'll hunt it down! We 'll close in and beat and beat and beat-" (p.114) once again jack is sepaking of thr beast again, he is convincing the boys that there absolutely is a beast and that he can protect them by hunting it.

Meanwhile, in Lord of the Flies, the situation is very different- several young boys have crashed onto a uninhabited island and have to find a way to survive. In the absence of any structure, the boys wreak havoc on the island, despite their efforts to create a working system of authority. George Orwell’s 1984 and William Golding’s Lord of the Flies provide differing views on the relationship between individuals and society, understood through characterization of Winston and Jack, and the social hierarchies present in each text. Orwell and Golding’s opposing views on the relation between society and the individual are apparent in their uses of characterization concerning Winston and Jack, respectively. In Golding’s Lord of the Flies, after Jack neglects building shelters in favor of hunting, Ralph is unhappy.

Many people have wished at some point there weren’t any rules, or have wondered about the consequences when there aren’t any rules. Rules wouldn’t have been devised if it weren’t for the safety of people. The lack of structure in a society could only destroy it. In Lord of the Flies, William Golding describes how the kids started with a strong desire for a structural society but fell apart as conflicts started to generate. The conch showed a strong sign of civilization; it brought the people together and as a group.

In life, you will have a time where you must make a hard choice, one that could impact your life significantly. Once settling with the right decision you instantly get hit by regret and anxiety, questioning yourself if you choose the right decision or not. Emotions cause negative outcomes, affect people's lives. In the novel Lord Of The Flies, Roger had the decision to kill piggy. He has the chance to kill piggy, so he did.

Through flashback, Amir recalls the story told to him of Hassan’s birth. Recalling this memory, Amir makes aware that he and Hassan nursed from the same woman and describes the “ kinship that not even time could break” that they held. Later he goes on to share each of their first words, Amir’s being “Baba” and Hassan’s being “Amir”. A baby’s first word tends to be the one the child is most closely associated with, and through this, one can observe the person to whom each child would look up to. Amir goes on to spend his childhood simply trying to be good enough, trying to be the child Baba would be proud of.

As stated before, Jack is selfish and only cares about power and to gain this power, Jack manipulates the children into following him. For instance, in chapter six, while they are discussing what to do after Sam and Eric supposedly saw the beast, Jack repeatedly hints that the beast does exist and that it is coming after them even though he knows it is not real. He also states “‘This is a hunter’s job’” (111). Jack feeds the fear and makes it grow. Additionally, he hints that he can protect them and Ralph cannot.

When Ralph declares Jack the head of hunters, Jack takes this power to another level of jealousy and greed and becomes savage. After he kills his first pig he puts blood on his face and creates a mask. Jack's hunters immediately follow his footsteps creating what appears to be an army with Jack as the general. Having an army eventually leads to having a war which happens towards the end of the book. This represents a futuristic nuclear war which is happening while the boys are stranded on the island.

In the book The Lord of the Flies we can see that many conflicts happen while the kids are in the island, most of these conflicts are struggled to be solved. The main conflict and the one that I 'm going to be talking about is the conflict between Ralph and Jack, were both boys compete for power. Ralph is more civilized and tries to make a fire and build tents while Jack is more of a savage who uses violence and wants to hunt all the time. Its is easy to see that in this literary piece the author uses many conflicts to make the reader visualize wants happening in the island. Ralph is voted by the boys to be the leader of the group, in the book he represents leadership, civilization and order.
