Out of the six chapters, I prefer to write about Chapter One: The Duel and Chapter Two: The Dinner. This book was very intriguing and helped to understand the post-revolutionary America and the lives of the founding brothers and what they went through. Chapter One: The Duel was a well-known duel in American history. Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton. July 11, 1804 is the exact date when the duel happened.

To speak out about gender inequalities Dave Barry wrote “Turkeys in the Kitchen”. Most would expect an essay with such a strong purpose to be serious but, in this essay includes an abundance of humor. Barry skillfully uses diction to provide a comedic relief but still allowing for effectiveness in making a statement. Barry, in his first sentence creates humor by stating “Men are still basically scum when it comes to helping out in the kitchen” (72). Calling men scum immediately sparks humor due to the fact that the author himself is a man.

One day, Barry made a reflection about guys and men, and wrote it in his book, Dave Barry’s Complete Guide to Guys. Barry writes this passage based off of different characteristics, and then connects those characteristics to his own life to explain why he feels that way about guys and men. By writing this way, he gets the attention of his audience and has them hooked throughout the whole passage. At the first glance the article is about a woman who reminisces about her childhood though the love of Twinkies, she is now grown and understands the truth about Twinkies and how unhealthy they are but still longs for the “snack cake” as her guilty pleasure. The meaning of the Twinkie changes and evolves though out the article and can be interpreted to represent multiple things. While labor issues were a factor in Hostesses bankruptcy, some of the blame can be placed on the migration of people leaning towards heathier options of food. Nguyen encapsulate this concept into a metaphor for the expansion of tolerance and open mindedness in the US now creating a heathier society. Even though the society she lives in now is ‘heathier’ she still reminisces about the Twinkie days where she could digest Twinkies (American culture) without worrying about its effect on her health (mind).

The novel "21: Bring down The House" is an exciting novel that is about counting cards in the most popular gambling game, Blackjack. It was published in 2003 and made into a movie, 21, in 2008. The novel explains the story of a group of MIT students who goes into the world of gambling. Kevin bored of chemistry wanted a new excited thing in his life. His roommates Martinez and Fisher introduce him to the MIT blackjack team that was trying to recruit him after see his math capabilities.

Throughout history, men and women have been treated differently. This can be seen in the written lines of time, from the age of the Greeks where women stayed at home and cared for the house while the men tended to the fields or fought in the wars, to the times of the first pioneers to land on the great shores of America where women were to conceive children with the men who were in America trading goods with Europe. Virgina Woolf adds to this model with her excerpt "The Two Cafeterias" in which she includes information that analyzes the life of women versus that of men in a society based on their daily meals. Outdated stereotypes create forced expectations and affect people for the worst. This is a common theme between “Turkeys in the Kitchen” by Dave Barry and “The Myth of the Latin Woman: I Just Met a Girl Named Maria” by Judith Ortiz Cofer. These works deal with stereotypes of gender and ethnicity, as well as how they are interpreted on the receiving end. Turkeys in the Kitchen deals with gender through anecdotes about cooking, and how the stereotypes of men and women in the kitchen persist post-women’s-liberation. “The Myth of the Latin Woman” deals with Puerto Rican stereotypes through anecdotes about how she is treated differently as a woman for her ethnicity, and how she is prematurely judged by her Puerto Rican behavior and ethnicity.

‘Masculinity’, ‘macho’, ‘guy things’, and ‘muscular’ are just a few of the patriarchal words that Andrew Warnes uses in Savage Barbecue to convey the obvious gender roles that are directly related to barbecue. The introduction of the book makes it clear that barbecue is not only a tradition, but “a very invented tradition”, and from the first invention of the tradition the mythology that the masculine notion of barbecue, was born. To what extent does food as a motif represent structure and bonds among characters in the novel? Paradise Of The Blind, written by Duong Thu Huong tells the story of a young Vietnamese girl in the 1980s. As Hang travels to Moscow by train she recounts her life experiences and contemplates on her past during the corrupt communist reign. The novel describes events through Hang’s perspective and illustrates her childhood memories using various motifs. Particularly, food is used as the most recurring and notable motif.

Narrator and Sara’s Tone In Anzia Yezierska 's Bread Givers of 1952, a family of immigrant parents living in poverty in the ghetto of New York City struggle to survive. Sara and the narrator both had an awestruck tone towards Max. No matter who was talking, they speak so kind and fondly about Max. Besides their similarities, there were many differences in speed and purpose. When Sara was speaking, she had a very hasty tone where her words were repetitive and scattered.

Chapter 7 of Fast Food Nation discussed the starting of meatpacking industry and its downfalls. At first, Iowa Beef Packers (IBP) used the same principle as McDonald’s principle to make fast foods. IBP hired unskilled workers just to do simple and repeated work all day. However, competition with other companies made IBP low wages and health insurance options. This caused slaughterhouses to move West to gain cheap labor and land.

In Russel Baker's essay, "The Art of Eating Spaghetti", he was trying to express that what you end up doing shouldn't be determined by how hard it will be, but instead by if you want to do it or not. He says that he felt that he wanted to be writer, but knew that it kids didn't just graduate and be a writer. At the end, he says, "Writing couldn't lead to a job after high school, and it was hardly honest work, but Mr. Fleagle had opened a door for me." The most effect part of his essay was when he wrote about how proud he felt when Mr. Fleagle was reading his essay out loud and everyone was listening and laughing, because it's what he would feel when people read his future stories as a writer.

Barry makes this argument by describing how women and sports do not mix well and cleaning and men do not mix well. First, he begins by saying, “The primary difference between men and women is that women can see extremely small quantities of dirt” ( ). He then continues by saying, “The opposite side of the dirt coin, of course, is sports. This is an area where men tend to feel very sensitive and women tend to be extremely callous” ( ). In his argument, he is using humor, exaggeration, and a rather defensive tone.

“Don’t Blame the Eater”, written by David Zinczenko, is a short article discussing how fast food is the main cause of childhood obesity. This article came about in relations to two kids filing a lawsuit against McDonalds for making them fat. He begins his piece by sympathizing with these individuals because he used to be like them. Zinczenko then informs the reader of his background and how he fell into the category of being dependent upon quick and easy meals. In an attempt to provide a valid argument, he debates on how kids raise themselves while their parents are at work and that the nutritional values are not labeled upon prepared foods.

SUMMARY American poet, Linda Pastan, in her poem “Marks” published in 1978 addresses the topic of women’s roles in the household and asserts that although mothers may be good at their household job, their desire to fulfill other careers is overpowering and necessary to thrive. Pastan supports her claim by using vivid imagery, such as describing the grades she gets from her life job, a repeating pattern in the sentence structure, when listing what each of her family members grades her as, and connotative diction, when describing her feelings about being targeted in such a hardening and impersonal way.
