The purchasing of the Louisiana Territory promoted Jefferson’s vision for the country because his plans for this nation depended on western expansion as well as access to the international markets for American farmer products. His vision was threatened when France gained control of Louisiana. Napoleon threatened to block American access to the New Orleans port. Napoleon, for a number of reasons, most to do with money, offered the Louisiana territory to the US for a minimal amount. The US now owning the Louisiana territory more than doubled its size overall. So by purchasing the Louisiana Territory and doubling the size of the US, I say this promoted Jefferson’s vision for the country.
There were also ways that the Louisiana Purchase went
Jefferson had multiple intentions in mind when he handled the land deal with France. The four main ones are: To continue looking for the supposed “Northwest Passage” through America, a river route that would slice through America and connect the two surrounding oceans, which would have allowed mass trade between Europe and India, as opposed to the normal land and/or longer sea travel To make peace with more of the Native American Tribes, as doing so would allow further expansion, trading, and less conflict. The purchase enabled more traveling along the Mississippi river because it held the large trading post Louisiana, which opened up more trade routes, expanding the flow of goods through the West To avoid conflict with France. Despite
Our third president of the United States, Thomas Jefferson, had great intentions when he was elected into the presidency. The actions that took place during his eight years in office reflect the principles that Jefferson believed in, and that is what he wanted to achieve. One of Jefferson’s beliefs was having an agricultural-based economy and life, rather than commerce and federal power. “He believed a person who owned a farm and worked the land would be economically independent, and that independence would develop and preserve wisdom, self-control, courage, and fortitude.
Jefferson decided to try and buy New Orleans. Why did he want to buy it? He wanted to be sure that American farmers would always be able to ship their goods through the port. Jefferson sent Robert Livingston and James Monroe to buy New Orleans and to buy West Florida from Napoleon. The president said they could offer as much as $10 million.
Making no reason for France to dislike America. Thomas Jefferson has great respect for France and made a clear choice that he would rather have France as an ally than
In the era before the Civil War America was expanding westward. The Louisiana Purchase and other lands gained help to give America new land to expand on, but this leaded to issues with the division of free and slave states. As Missouri became a state they wanted to become a slave state, which caused trouble. In order to keep equilibrium between the states, Congress came up with the Missouri Compromise of 1820.The Missouri Compromise made Missouri a slave state and Maine a free state. The Treaty also made a line within the Louisiana Territory to keep slavery from moving up the
I agree that Jefferson feared all southern states would be at Napoleon’s mercy if he settled in New Orleans. However, Napoleon’s intentions of the New World backfired as yellow fever, other diseases, and rebels revolting assisted in Napoleons decision to cut his losses. Furthermore, I also want to add that another reason the Louisiana Purchase came about was because Jefferson envisioned a country large enough for all descendants and felt the land of America allowed this, but Jefferson realized the nation’s current condition was too small. Therefore, he knew if he could somehow acquire rights to the land west of the Mississippi, it would provide people with enough land to prosper forever.
Yet the federal us movement saw this is supporting flexibility not stability within the nation. McCoy describes these ideas of the Republicans with their own bias view giving a more enlightened look at Republicans compared to Kerber Article that gives a persistent view of their opportunity as federalist and their success with political however after reading McCoys article sheds light on how Jefferson did not want to industrialize the country a feeling that there was little need and that the ideal diss taste meant for proletariat on industry labor and also discussions and arguments over Louisiana purchase. Federal us at this time so this purchase to be random and unneeded where Jefferson sought is the importance of expansion of the country and contributing to a realistic power being added to the
The Louisiana Purchase is one of the largest buys in American History. Many changes affected the size of the U.S in the early 1800’s. The Louisiana purchase took place in 1803 for the cost of 15 million dollars. The amount of money that was given for the purchase was very cheap at that time for the U.S. As a result Americans bought more land to colonize.
The Federalists obviously opposed the Louisiana Purchase for political reasons, not practical because they hated Thomas Jefferson. "I am disgusted with the men who now rule us. The coward at the head [Jefferson] is like a French Revolutionary," (Pickering, 1803) stated Timothy Pickering in a letter to Rufus King. This shows, clearly, that federalists only care about opposing Thomas Jefferson, not opposing the Louisiana Purchase. Most federalists, although some had very good reasons for opposing the constitution, only cared about hatred for Mr. Jefferson and with that hatred for all of his ideas.
Discuss the acquisition of the Louisiana Purchase. How important were Lewis and Clark? In 1718 New Orleans was founded by the French. At the end of the French and Indian War, France lost its lands east of the Mississippi to Great Britain. In another treaty, France agreed and gave New Orleans Louisiana and the French lands west of the Mississippi to Spain.
Which was a very hard and money costing route to take just to ship goods. So, when we bought the Louisiana Purchase, that meant free access to routing western goods down the Mississippi River, through the New Orleans Port and then sailing either too an American east coast port, or going across the Atlantic to Europe
Also, with the control of the Mississippi river we could now have stronger trade and be able to use the Mississippi river for different things. This evidence supports that it was a very smart move that the United States decided to make the Louisiana Purchase with France. To conclude, the Louisiana Purchase was a very smart move by the United States because this allowed many positive thing to happen. First, it allowed the western country to have peace and prosperity mainly with the Indians and opened a free and valuable market. Second, it doubled the size of the United States making it a bigger and stronger nation.
The Federalists opposed the Louisiana Purchase for many practical reasons and not for practical reasons. The document, A said that Federalists thought that American Indians in the area could cause problems and kill some colonists moving into the area. Document A said that the Federalists suspected new states formed in the Louisiana Territory would be Republican. Document A said that the Federalists thought that probably no one would settle there so the land purchased would be useless. Document A said that they(the Federalists) feared that the new national government would be too powerful and thus put at risk individual liberties.
The US wanted to expand its territory for the growth of slavery, which was a dehumanizing and morally wrong practice. Although many Americans wanted slavery to expand, many did not.
New Orleans being a port city, it was a good passage for trade. Despite this, a rebellion in Haiti had shifted his focus off of the territory. Now that the land held no benefit to him, and was a large mass just taking up space, he decided his best option was to sell the land and gain the money for France (“Background”). Jefferson's only concern was securing the waterway into the Gulf of Mexico. He offered a sum of two million dollars for the port city alone.
