Not only does Young love his audience, but he also loves the privileges he was able to receive. The privilege in this case was the Buick. Often when an average parent or upstanding individual turns on the television and sees a young black man rapping about the hood they are murdered. On impulse the channel is changed without considering what message that individual is endeavouring to deliver. Right when listening to rapper Too Short and his song "Gettin it", you hear a lot about how hard it is to be a black individual. The tune is about getting away from the hood and making a fair life for yourself. The lion's share of society simply expect that these energetic but black rappers have no brains and no sense of purpose for life.

However, critics are missing the point of the hip hop song’s message, because they are too focused on the violent and explicit lyrics of some rappers. Many people who believe that hip hop is too violent don’t see what the artist is trying to get across to his audience. In the song Love Yourz by J Cole, J Cole mentions materialistic items such as cars, money, homes, as well as women. He mentions these things, but he isn’t talking about those things in a negative way. He says there’s always going to be a bigger house or better car or newer clothes, but that doesn’t matter at all unless you can love yourself first, and be grateful of what you do have in the first place.

J. Coles song “Hold it Down” has a special place in my heart, since it was one of the first songs I heard from him. This song made me want to listen to him more and learn about his life in detail. His story telling in his songs are impeccable, which he is gifted with. The pain and feelings he puts in his songs are like no other artist. Cole’s use of enjambment, imagery, metaphor, and repetition all hold a deep meaning in the song.

In order to heal, mentally and physically, you have to learn to forgive and receive forgiveness. This was a lesson the reader and the main character, Cole, experience throughout the book.

From the very beginning of her rap career in the late 1980s, she let it be known that she is not “Paper Thin” and she can stand strong amongst the male-dominated rapping scene during that time. MC Lyte is more than just a female rapper, she is a international speaker, DJ, icon, Hip Hop veteran, entrepreneur, and author. All of these nouns describe “one of the most prolific and well-respected female Hip Hop artist of all time” (“Get Lyte Now”).

“Dear Mama” by Tupac is a tribute song to Tupac’s mother. The song depicts Tupac’s love for his mother and his gratitude for her work and mother ship throughout his childhood. She raised him from poverty, crack addiction, and many other circumstances brought on by the world that formed Tupac Shakur and Dear Mama. The reason I love this song because Tupac addressed his mother with brutal honesty, forgiving her for abandoning him and thanking her for raising him. “Even though you was a crack fiend, mama/ You always was a black queen, mama, “he rapped.
