The civil war not only had an effect on the government, foreign policy, finances, but also the people that fought in the war or had loved ones in the war. Reading biographies and first hand recounts of the civil war is the best two ways to understand how it felt to live during this time in history. It’s an important insight that helps paint a picture of how living during the war was, and how people lived. The first recount of the civil war comes from William Stewart Price.

The United States Civil War is possible one of the most meaningful, bloodstained and controversial war fought in American history. Northern Americans against Southern Americans fought against one another for a variety of motives. These motives aroused from a wide range of ideologies that stirred around the states. In James M. McPherson’s What they fought for: 1861-1865, he analyzes the Union and Confederate soldier’s morale and ideological components through the letters they wrote to love ones while at war. While, John WhiteClay Chambers and G. Kurt Piehler depict Civil War soldiers through their letters detailing the agonizing battles of war in Major Problems in American Military History.

The Civil War is seen as disastrous, upsetting, and a new start for America. In Across Five Aprils, written by Irene Hunt, she shows all of those feelings. The Civil War was a hard time for many families. Their son’s are going to war, they still have to work, and they need someone to protect the family. You worry for your safety, and your children’s.

The time period after the Civil War was a very interesting time. Just because the Civil War was over does not mean that all of the hard feelings would go away. Families had been separated during the war and many of them still believed in what they had been fighting for. The Union had to figure out a way to get the North and South to work as a team, yet many politicians had different views as to how this should be done. Another issue that began to rise was between the President and Congress.

Life for the Union Soldier was not only brutal on the battlefield, but the camp life for a Union soldier was just as cruel. With the lack of personal hygiene, unsavory and repugnant food, and the shortage of clothing made living, a very difficult thing to do. Growth in the number of people with diseases was also a contributing factor to the massive amounts of death within the camp and as well as the post-battle wounds that often left either a man with one less limb or put in a mental institution. A Union Soldier’s life during the Civil War was cruel and horrific during their stay at the camps.

The Civil War is a very brutal war in American History. One nation fought and killed its own people, and over half a million lives were destroyed and even more families were torn apart. The nation was divided because of slavery. In the North, people wanted to abolish slavery and make free states. In the South, people wanted to keep slavery because it was profitable to their economy and generated a 100% profit on all goods sold.

In this movie, you see the life style on being a slave. Solomon Northup was a free man that was kidnapped and was traded off in the slave trade and endured the life style of a slave. There is a scene in the movie where he is building a house and the white man comes and tells him he is wrong and tells him to rip his clothes off so he can be whipped. Solomon refuse and takes a stand knowing that it is wrong he took a stand for what he though was right. This movie was primarily made to show the harsh conditions that they had to go thought but also an insider some of the slaves that made a stand.

The film’s omission of the ACS offers a sanitized version of early American abolitionism in which white heroes rescue grateful and downtrodden slaves. When the film gets to the jubilation of emancipation it is from Garrison as his “savior’s” well doing. Later sixty-three people vowed to participate in the antislavery act and spread it around. Shortly after Angelina and Theodore two believers of the same belief got married, where there was a black and white minister first time in history. Angry slave owners set flames that engulfed the building.

The Civil War was a conflict between the Union and Confederacy over the abolition of slavery. There were many individuals white and black that had a major impact on the victory of the Union Army. Both whites and African Americans fought bravely and valiantly, but for African Americans the Civil War meant so much more to them than it ever could for the whites. The Civil War meant freedom, it meant that African Americans could live their life according to themself, instead of according to their masters. It meant that it brought African Americans one step closer to being equal to whites in the society’s eyes.

Voces Inocentes shares the lifestory of a young boy named Chava who lived through the Salvadoran Civil War. Chava was only 11 year old and lived with his mom and his two siblings. His father left to the US for a better life and never returned to El Salvador. Every night, Chava and his family had to hide under their beds due to the warfare that was occurring outside of their home. They were forced to see dead bodies every morning, sometimes from people they cared about.

In chapter one of What They Fought For, I learned about the letters and diaries of the Confederate soldiers. The themes of the letters were home-sickness, lack of peace, and the defense of home against their invading enemy. The thought of soldiers fighting for their homes and being threatened by invaders, made them stronger when facing adversity. Many men expressed that they would rather die fighting for a cause, than dying without trying and this commitment showed patriotism. Throughout the letters, soldiers claimed their reason for fighting, was for the principles of Constitutional liberty and self-government.
