The Maltese Falcon novel is a hardboiled novel. It characterizes the era of prohibition in San Francisco. The era of prohibition in San Francisco was an era where there was a sharp rise in mobs and crimes. Women were not left out of these changes. This was when some group of women will become known as flappers. Brigid O’Shaughnessy can be known as a young lady who took on to the flapper’s culture. The name the Maltese Falcon does not really reveal the novel as a dark and hardboiled novel enough. The 1972 edition cover of the novel reveals the novel will be a hardcore novel than the 1992 edition cover.
The 1972 edition cover has a deep black background. Looking at the color black alone will prompt a reader to get his mind ready for the hardboiled novel. I think the black color was chosen to show that most crimes were going to occur during the night. The first crime that was committed took place at night at a cemetery and if one reflects on that scene, one might see the reason why the black background d was chosen. The black background also reflects the hearts of Sam Spade, Brigid O’Shaughnessy and Mr. Gutman. These three characters are dangerous in their own ways. Sam Spade is a hardboiled detective that does not show any respect for the authorities. He does not trust anyone. It seems like he does not really want to have any woman in his life as he prefers flirting with women instead of having a true relationship with a woman. On the

Athanasourelis’s article depicts Sam Spade’s individuality through his actions leading up to Brigid O’Shaughnessy’s conviction. Sam’s initial intentions are to help Brigid avoid the police. Upon coming to the conclusion that Brigid is the only suspect in the murder of Archer, Sam knows he has to turn her into the authorities. The article discusses that although it may seem as if Sam is acting justly, he is truly just turning Brigid in to avoid his own persecution for the crimes others committed. Hammett establishes Sam’s morals frequently throughout the novel by further describing his character as a “hard-boiled detective”.
“Never say goodbye because saying goodbye means going away and going away means forgetting.” - Peter Pan “Goodbye may seem forever. Farewell is like the end but in my heart 's a memory and there you 'll always be.” - “The Fox and the Hound” - Richard Rich and Jeffrey C. Patch If we live enough and keep a sad way of seeing life we could say life is tragically short. But most forget to remember with death comes life, with life comes death.

Greed is an “Intense and selfish desire for something, especially wealth, power, or food” (Oxford Dictionary). In The Maltese Falcon, everyone has the aspirations of finding the falcon for themselves. This is the driving force behind the murders, and betrayals many of the characters commit. Brigid, Cairo, Wilmer, and Gutman all seek the falcon for the same reason, the unimaginable wealth it will bring them. Possessing this rare object seems to consume them and they will do anything to get their hands on it.
Both Gutman and Brigid cannot do what they truly need to to acquire the Falcon but instead have to either pay or manipulate, respectively, to reach their end. Sam Spade, the protagonist of Hammett's narrative, also holds a code but does not flaunt it such as Gutman or Brigid, but, instead, hides it and uses deception to fool others into believing that he is going in accordance with their plans instead of actually proceeding to follow his code of honor and justice to where justice will be served. Spade's code is one of honor and he follows this code even if it is not apparent. His code is to, by any means, reach the conclusion and the truth of any mystery that comes before him and turn the culprit, whoever that culprit may be, over to the justice system and see that justice be served. He continually uses Gutman and Brigid and their interests against each other and exploits their weaknesses while not exposing his entirely.

The first woman who best fits the preconceived notion of a female always catering to a man would be Effie Perine. She works for the protagonist, Sam Spade, as his secretary and right hand woman. What ever Spade needs to be done she will do it without question or hesitation.
A good quote that shows how black can be used to show deep emotions is, "Somehow, between the sadness and loss, Max Vandenburg, who was now a teenager with hard hands, blackened eyes, and a sore tooth, was also a little disappointed. ”(Zusak 188) The use of black in this quote shows how Max’s eyes were deep and filled with sadness. Gone with the Wind Analysis While watching the film Gone with the Wind most people would pay little to no attention to details like camera angle or lighting. However, Gone with the Wind is a great example of mise-en-scene ,what is physically being shot in the scene without editing and can include, but is not limited to camera movement, lighting, focus and scenery, in many different ways. Mise-en-scene actually appears during the first scene when Scarlett is sitting on the steps of Tara, her family’s plantation, along with her two of her male companions. Scarlett is sitting on the top stair while the twins are sitting on stairs below hers almost as if they were worshipping her. Scarlett is also looking down upon the twins as if she were superior to them.
Birds are gifted with the extraordinary ability to fly. Their wings propel them above the ground and over people below. They are able to view the world from an angle that no one else gets to see. This is what makes birds and wings such powerful symbols in literature. These symbols characterize characters, move the plot and develop one more of the book’s ideas.
The color black is a symbol for death and despair as well which can be connected to all of the terrible acts that have been committed with
