After the windmill is destroyed, Napoleon blames Snowball by saying that he is the traitor who is trying "to set back our plans and avenge himself for his ignominious expulsion” (82). Napoleon’s strong desire to keep power drives him to blame Snowball for the destruction of the windmill to make him look good, so he would not be blamed for all the destructions and injuries that occur within the Farm. This impels the animals to assume that Snowball is the victim and consequently the animals would rely on Napoleon to keep Snowball away for their protection. Squealer swindles the animals saying that the windmill was actually Napoleon’s invention and that his opposition towards it is just a fabrication in order “to get rid of Snowball, who was a dangerous character and a bad influence” (71). Napoleon’s only strategy is to make the animals under the impression that Snowball is the source of all destructions in order to keep his power.

The first thing they established in the farm was the system of Animalism, which stated that all animals were equal and that they should all share responsibilities and rewards of the farm. As a result, they established the seven commandments, which stated some rules for the farm, some of those rules were, “Whatever upon two legs is an enemy. In Animal Farm, we see the sinister theme of abuse of power and corruption displayed throughout the story. The epitome on how the pigs abused the power was how they manipulated the 7 commandments to their own benefit. The 7 commandments were inscribed on the wall and they would form “an unalterable law by which all animals on Animal Farm must live for ever after”. Ironically, the 7 commandments were changed one by one to suit the benefit of the pigs. For example, when the pigs discovered a case of whiskey and got drunk, they got attracted to the taste of alcohol.

The ensuing rebellion under the leadership of the pigs Napoleon and Snowball leads to the animals taking over the farm. Vowing to eliminate the terrible inequities of the farmyard, the renamed Animal Farm is organised to benefit all who walk on four legs. But as time passes, the ideals of the rebellion are corrupt, then forgotten. This is all due to the lust for power that the pigs Napoleon and Snowball have that made them all selfish and corrupted. The government told the human race that nothing is wrong, it was just the citizens’ fear of the worst. So people did not worry about their lack of food or unsafe working conditions because they had no reason to distrust the government. They never realized that their idea of a utopia slowly slipped through their grasp. Rather than maintaining utter perfection in respect of laws, politics, customs, and conditions, the government remained in oppressive societal control; everything appeared ideal, but once examined closer, the true horrors came to light.

Here the conditions the animals suffered are described, “Throughout the spring and summer they worked a sixty-hour week, and in August Napoleon announced that there would be work on Sunday afternoons as well. This work was strictly voluntary, but any animal who absented himself from it would have his rations reduced by half”(24). This quote shows how Napoleon manipulated the animals so that they were forced to either work unrealistic hours or starve. The pigs represent the Soviet ruling class because they are greedy, lazy, and manipulative. When Napoleon attacks Snowball and drives him to exile he is imitating the way Joseph Stalin drove his former friend Leon Trotsky to death.
