Maya Angelou once stated, “My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style” (Angelou). Being passionate and thriving in a career is essential for me to stay motivated and to be able to enjoy my time at work. Throughout my life I have always really liked science and math, and I enjoy the ocean. I have also been very passionate about animals and I would love to help them and protect their habitats. Becoming a veterinarian or marine biologist would allow me to be satisfied going to work each day because they both incorporate my interests. Although veterinarians and marine biologists are similar in job qualities, they differ in salaries, work environment and …show more content…
First of all, marine biologists may scuba dive to retrieve samples but a veterinarian will stay on land and treat animals in a clinic or at a farm. The a majority veterinarian’s work mainly consists of time in animal hospitals and laboratories, but there are some who travel to different locations to treat animals. Most veterinarians spend most of their time with animals not humans (“Veterinarians”). On the other hand, marine biologists spend the majority their time in a lab, but still might go out in the field. Although, it is not everyday that a marine biologist goes on research trips, periodically I could spend time with others on a research vessel (“Marine Biologists” 346). Also, these careers share different schedules, as a veterinarian will have to respond to emergencies at all hours but a marine biologist will spend times in labs or in the field. The veterinarians work schedule is unpredictable, and they often work many long days because it is impossible to know when the next emergency will be. This is explained by John Riddle and Rae Simons, “You are sitting at your desk, trying to eat lunch as you read Veterinary News , a trade journal, when a nurse rushes in to tell you that someone has just brought in a cat that was hit by a car…Thirty minutes later you breath easier when you realize the cat will be okay. As a veterinarian, you must always be prepared for emergencies”(11). …show more content…
Although both veterinarians and marine biologists utilize labs their purposes and job duties are very different. Of the many tasks and treatments I would perform daily as a veterinarian, I most commonly will examine pets, as well as treat animals through surgeries and vaccinations. Veterinarians also will x-ray animals and help to inform owners about their pet 's health care and treatments (“Veterinarians”). Riddle and Simons stated, “more than a half of these veterinarians treat small animals… Some veterinarians work in mixed animal practices where they see pigs, goats, sheep and so non-domestic animals, in addition to companion animals. Veterinarians in clinical practices diagnose animal health problems; vaccinate against disease… set fractures and perform surgery”(13). Unlike a veterinarian, as a marine biologist I would be studying plants and animals living in saltwater, not curing a sick pet. According to the “Encyclopedia of Careers and Vocational Guidance”, “to study plants and animals, marine biologists spend some of their work time in the ocean wearing wetsuits to keep them warm (because of the frigid temperature below the surface of the sea) and scuba gear to breathe under water. They gather specimens with a slurp gun, which sucks fish into a specimen bag without injuring them”(“Marine Biologist” 345). After the collection of these samples, I would take the samples back to the lab to run test and observe their qualities and changes. Both of these careers both
“Just imagine trying to cover 20 sea lions’ bodies with medicine!” (Woo). David Kenney was the very first veterinarian hired at Seaworld. He was originally called by Seaworld to conduct necropsies on whales and dolphins, they liked the work he had done so they decided to hire him on the job. David W. Kenney was the first veterinarian also to work at Seaworld.
Hannah Ton Mrs. Braun Honors American Literature 1 November 2015 SeaWorld Orca Breeding Should Not Be Continued When Dr. Heather Rally, a veterinarian who specializes with marine mammals, visited SeaWorld, she witnessed an orca with a severely collapsed fin and asked an “educational” guide why its fin was bent. The guide replied that it was a genetic trait just like curly or straight hair. However, Rally knows the truth, scientific evidence suggests that the high rate of dorsal fin collapse in captive orcas is due to conditions of captivity. These include spending an abnormally long time at the surface in direct sunlight and continuously swimming in tight circles.
Veterinary technicians, veterinary technologists, and veterinary assistants are all important parts of the animal health care team. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, jobs within the veterinary field are increasing faster than the rate of increase for other jobs. Jobs for veterinarians and veterinary technicians are projected to increase by 16 percent from 2019 through 2029. This is faster than the projected average increase for all other occupations ("Veterinarian Vs. Vet Tech").
The Great White Shark The Great White Sharks, known mostly because of their white underbellies, are one of the most powerful aquatic animals in the world. They can swim at about 25 Miles Per Hour (40 Kilometers per hour) because of their strong muscles and forceful tails. In addition to that, male Great Whites can grow around 11.5 to 13.1 feet long, while females can grow from 14.8 to 16.4 feet long. This paper will demonstrate how Great White Sharks are an important part of their ecosystem, how their diets work and will adequately describe their habitats. As predators in their ecosystem, Great White sharks help maintain the coral reefs and seagrass habitats.
What does being a veterinary technician entail? “Veterinary technicians assist veterinarians in the care of animals. They may perform an initial evaluation of the animal 's condition,
Imagine spending a life malnourished, sick and in captivity just so that people can see a performance with tricks and splashing. Captivity has harmed marine mammals for centuries and has become a reoccurring problem in places like SeaWorld. There is no understanding of why people enjoy seeing abused animals held in captivity. SeaWorld’s inhumane manner of care must cease and instead refocus the marine work and efforts on confined animal rehabilitation through exceptional nutrition and investigative research. Current Practices SeaWorld’s way of care for the marine animals shows barbarism, causing sickened and malnourished aquatic mammals with health defects and physical impediments.
I’m looking forward to extend my love for animals to help others with their animal medical needs. My career choice of becoming a Veterinary Technician is to promote good animal health. I want to work in a career which makes me fulfilled professionally and also where there is an opportunity for advancement. This profession will give me the opportunity to provide services to the community. I understand the deep feelings that pet owners have for their pets, therefore I want to do my best to provide good medical care for their pets and help
Introduction This case study of SeaWorld of Florida v. Perez is a case where the safety protocols set by SeaWorld were set up to keep trainers safe. However, it could also show that they were put into place due to the violent nature of the killer whales therefore showing that SeaWorld knew the dangers trainer Brancheau would be facing on a daily basis. This case was about the legal issues enforced by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and how the plaintiff established a valid violation under the General Duty Clause of the OSH Act. Additionally it will explain how the elements of a valid claim were satisfied under the OSH Act as well as understanding how OSHA enforces workplace safety and health standards.
They observe animals behavior, prepare them for any surgeries and exams, first aid and nursing care, take lab samples or tests, x-rays, responsible of animal records, and dispense shots medication or treatments to the animal patients. The environment that vet techs work in can range from an animal clinic to a zoo. I personally would prefer an animal hospital or clinic. Veterinary technician’s jobs are just as physically and emotionally demanding as a nurse’s. They must have a flexible schedule to work late evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Veterinary Technician Veterinary Technicians are the people who check your animal 's weight and look to see if there are any visual problems with them when bringing them to the Veterinarian office. I chose this career because I have always been a huge fan of all kinds of animals. I wasn’t aloud to have animals when I was younger so I became more interested in them.
Additionally, veterinary technicians could work in laboratories or performing x-rays (GlobalPost, 2016). The basic tasks of a veterinary technician is to collect lab specimens, supervise
The typical work environment is a private clinic, animal hospital, laboratories, rescue leagues, boarding kennels, animal shelters, and zoos. Some of a veterinary technician’s jobs might be emotionally and physically challenging
When one thinks of a veterinarian, most associate this job title with treating dogs, cats, horses, cows, and other farm and companion animals. However, a relatively small field not known by the general population is that of marine veterinary medicine. If one has a passion for the water and a desire to help the creatures in it, marine veterinary medicine just may be the perfect career. Marine veterinarians are responsible for “conducting basic exams and evaluations, giving vaccinations, taking samples of blood and other bodily fluids, prescribing and distributing medication, evaluating behaviour, performing surgical procedures, and taking x-rays and sonograms” (Kramer “Life of an Aquatic Veterinarian”).
As part of my job at PetSmart, I am responsible for cleaning both saltwater and freshwater tanks. This includes wiping the main and comet sumps in the morning, cleaning/changing prefilters/ filter socks in the main and comet systems, cleaning loc-lines and strainers to allow better output flow of water, and wiping down all aquarium outer surfaces, tops, and fronts. I am also responsible for removing deceased or diseased fish and plants, vacuuming the gravel, algae scrubbing, water changing, and decoration soaking and scrubbing with sodium thiosulfate. I also wipe-down any areas from water spills around the tank. Do you have any past animal husbandry, care, and/or handling experience?
Marine biologist use sound recorders to record sounds made by marine animals, marine biologist analyze the sounds. Marine animals can be tracked by the sounds they make. Personal characteristics that are mandatory when being a marine biologist include having patience, curiosity, and interest in the ocean. A marine biologist is always learning so you must have an interest in whatever you're researching or studying about.
