I practiced learning and using it from a very young age. As I got older, my parents decided to transfer me to an international school where I started to learn English as my second language. The new school environment transformed and gave me a passion to learn another language, and this was a strong foundation that helped me to make the decision of pursuing a degree in the United States 6 years

Throughout my life, I have faced adversity everywhere I go, no matter what I do. So when people tell me that they have had a rough day, my favorite thing to tell them is, “Remember that adversity builds a man.” This philosophy has carried me a long way, and most importantly has allowed me to grow into the individual I am today. One of my biggest personal accomplishments, which was being able to play college baseball, was spurred on because an upperclassman told me I would never be good enough to play high school varsity ball. I proceeded by taking that player’s starting job the next year.

Raised all my life in Puerto Rico and then transferring to America was a great challenge. I had to overcome various difficulties in order to adapt to new ideas, cultures, and lifestyles. One of the obstacles I encountered was adapting to school. Since I was five my parents wanted me to imbibe the English language in order to have an exceptional future filled with opportunities, but when I arrived all my hard work in learning English did not seem to matter at my middle school. I arrived in this country thinking I was going to be in the most challenging classes and be at the top but reality smacked me in the face the first day I entered eighth grade.

My coach always said, “There is somebody working just as hard as you, what sets you apart from them.” That created a fire inside of me because when it’s late at night and it’s been a long day, I go back to what he said and it drives me to get better. I feel this way when I train for baseball, when I do schoolwork, and when I do anything in life. It has also given me a dose of humility because I have come to understand that I may not be the most skilled player on the field at times but nobody will outwork me. It has created a drive to succeed in everything I do and a competitiveness that has set me apart from others.

This whole process enlightened me on how to handle situations that are not the best, and also how to always keep a positive spirit even when the clouds are covering the sun. A problem with most is that all they look and care about is the end result. Success is not determined by the end result, but the process to which one gets there. Those long nights training, working so hard to achieve their dream. No one becomes successful overnight.

For me, literacy has always been a problem to this day I am still learning how to speak, and write using proper literacy. Literacy is not just reading and writing, anyone can do that but the ability to understand such things, to comprehend them that is, true literacy. My development for literacy has always been a struggle as I have spoken about before. I had a speak impediment when I was younger which used me to go into different classes which took me away from formal English classes.

STATEMENT OF GRANT PURPOSE Stephen Hill, Spain, English Teaching Assistant I wish to undertake an English Teaching Assistant opportunity in Spain to peruse my passion for teaching and training. With the knowledge and experience I will gain from teaching in Spain, I plan to look for employment opportunities within the U.S. state department. Opportunities that would make use of my knowledge and experience with Spain would be of particular interest to me. I have been complimented on my patience and ability to explain concepts in different ways that accommodate multiple learning styles.

First of all, my experience of learning English was a great process which took fifteen years as a Turkish native speaker. When I was seven years old, I started to learn English and I am able to learn languages. When I was five years old, I was watching cartoons in English and in my opinion it was so helpful for me to learning a new language. I have been learning English for fifteen years including my college life. I studied American Culture and Literature in Bilkent University.
