Of course Matthew originally took this as a joke or an exaggeration, but then the student did something that majorly crossed the line. The article states that Matthew saw the boy pull out a map of the school and proceeded to start “picking dates.” Matthew was then aware that it was his duty to tell someone. He confronted the school administrators and told them all he had heard. Because of this action, the student that had spoken about shooting up the school was arrested, no shots were ever fired and many lives were potentially saved. Matthew knows he “did the right thing,” but if he did not speak up, he could have witnessed a massacre, a massacre that he would always be partly responsible for. Statistics in the article show that “4 out of 5 school shooters revealed their plans ahead of time, but no one reported the threats.” Therefore if there were more people that had spoken up about the threats, 4 out of 5 school shootings could have been …show more content…
These teens state that talking to someone about a troublesome situation that you witnessed would cause you to become exceedingly unpopular, insulted, or maybe even detested! The article states, “they fear everything from being labeled a snitch, to getting into trouble.” The followers of this belief say “that divulging concerns will mark the end of friendship.” Consequently, some people think it is best not to talk about a dangerous situation because it could make you unpopular. There is substantial evidence that says you should cry out in concern if you witness a harmful situation so that peace and order can prosper. If you witness a dangerous situation and do not call out for help, you are partly at fault for the trauma that ensues. Do not keep quiet because you think it is a joke. Never expect someone else to speak up for you. You could be the only witness of any harmful situation, therefore it is up to you to seek help and

Rosie the Riveter is a cultural icon that has come to represent women's contributions to the workforce during World War II. This image of a strong and capable woman has become a symbol of empowerment and equality for women. However, the effectiveness of this image as a rhetorical device is still a topic of debate. In this essay, we will analyze the rhetorical strategies used in Rosie the Riveter and evaluate its effectiveness.
On August 19, 1992 Mary Fisher, an AIDS activist that has the disease herself, performs a speech titled “A Whisper of AIDS.” She addresses this speech to the Republican National Convention to raise awareness on the growing AIDS epidemic. She also addresses her speech to the ones who are currently living with AIDS and their close friends and relatives. By presenting this speech, she hopes to shed light on the truth of AIDS and show people that it does not know gender, race, or sexuality, and that it is not a punishment imposed on people by God for their “sinful actions.” Her usage of stylistic devices as well as the addition of personal stories and experiences from her life enhances the speech and allows it to resonate in not only the minds
The main aspect that influenced the way I described what I witnessed would have to be how comfortable I am having a detailed conversation with the person. I would be most comfortable with my best friends, willing to tell them the whole story exactly as it happened. I probably would have this enthusiastic, slightly exaggerated tone while sharing since they are the ones I would want to tell the most. I would not expect them to believe me at face value, but they would still be supportive of me. With the police, I would be comfortable to share what had happened with them.
America, the land of the free and the home of the brave. This phrase is sung with pride and passion by American citizens. However, some of America’s hardest working citizens are shackled down by a factor that they have no control over. Poverty, is what’s keeping citizens imprisoned while they should be living free. An appalling 44 percent of homeless Americans are employed (http://nationalhomeless.org/).
I was raised in the Columbine High School community of Littleton, Colorado, a community that had already suffered a major school shooting tragedy. “Columbine” was something my older siblings talked about, something people were still healing from but something I was too young to understand. That is until February 23, 2010 when my innocence escaped me. It had been the end of a typical middle school day when I gathered my things and headed for the door. I remember being startled when my heart started to pound and the Holy Ghost urged me to move quickly into the bus.
Columbine high school was never the same after they made national headlines in 1999. Two students named Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, were responsible for the killing of thirteen students and wounding twenty others. Also, for the killing of themselves. During the investigation we learned that the students involved were first students, that have been bullied, picked on and loners in the school, the signs were there but ignored by everyone at their homes and school. Due to the shooting at Columbine high school, the world had now seen the effects of school bullying, and mistreatment of each other.
“As of this writing, a Google search for the SPU shooter’s name brings up 409,000 hits—52,000 more than for Jon Meis, the 22-year-old student who selflessly subdued the shooter before he could claim more victims” (Herz). More people chose to follow up on the shooter rather than
This world has been and continues to be scarred with constant, horrific, deadly, and painful events that affect hundreds of families. The unexpected mass shootings, school gun-downs, ramming of crowds, the bombing of a populated area, and dozens more, are now expected to appear in our news feed, but serious changes to prevent these disasters rarely occur. But the question is, how many more children have to die? How many more families need to be destroyed? How many more innocent
School Shootings: How We All Miss the Point... The aftermath of a school shooting is tragic, depressing, and causes hatred for the lives lost and the person who took them. Everyone, especially the media, tries to interpret why the shooter killed their victims, or why they felt the need to end others’ lives and their own. How We All Miss the Point on School Shootings, by Mark Manson, explains what and why these mass shootings happen. He starts by using examples of shootings and the murderer’s past.
Bryson Esplin Mr. Johansen ENG 101 1 February 2023 Rhetorical Analysis of Julie Petersen’s “Analysis Essay: Is Macbeth A Tragic Hero?” One true problem with writing posted to the internet is the inability to prove what, if anything, is true or credible. With common phrases such as “Don’t believe everything you read” and “Fake news,” it has become more important than ever to know what articles are reliable. One example of a source that claims to be trustworthy but is questionable at best is the website AskPetersen.com. Julie Petersen, who runs the website, claims to have everything to help readers “write a perfect essay” (Petersen, “Blog”).
A nonprofit group that attempts to prevent gun violence called “Everytown for Gun Safety,” released a statement about school shootings. The organization claimed that the school shooting at “[Marjory Stoneman Douglas High] is the 18th school shooting in the U.S. in 2018.’” (Cox and Rich). In less than three months, there have been eighteen school shootings. This shows that schools are no longer a safe environment.
Recently in Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school which is located in Parkland, Florida, a school shooting took place. This shooter took seventeen innocent people 's lives some were the students who had the desire to learn, and become something and some were teachers who had the ability to show a student the contrast between right and wrong. The shooter was a former student from the school, who had been expelled for trying to start a fire in the school building. If this person had integrity, the ability to accept that he was wrong and if he just had civility or respect for others. He was against people with color and required mental help, he had also created a youtube channel and recorded videos saying he wanted a gun, and he wanted to kill people, he couldn 't admit his mistake and didn 't try to improve.
This is important because these people are endangering the people that we love and care for. At any moment it could be your son or daughter that is riding in a bus that gets hit by a car and what happens if they die. It may not be your fault, but then think that something you may do every so often did that to your son. The most important thing of all this is that
For example, the family that is afraid of the riots installs excessive precautionary security around their house that makes it a prison. Both of the perceived dangers that the characters face pose no threat to them as these threats are far away. These problems of fear and reacting to it irrationally poses a threat in the story and society because the family’s reactions to the riots ultimately ends with consequences with the death of their son from the security measures, and this reflects that society can face
