In Pratt’s understanding, a contact zone is term that refers to social spaces where cultures meet, clash, and grapple with each other, often in contexts of highly asymmetrical relations of power, such as colonialism, slavery, or their aftermaths as they are lived out in many parts of the world today. Mary Louise Pratt delivered this speech in 1990 to the MLA Association Literacy Conference in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. Pratt was a professor of both the language of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of New York. The first thing mentioned in Pratt’s speech is literacy. Literacy is the ability to read and write in the simplest form, however in this speech Pratt wants to create a new definition and meaning for literacy. In the first part of Pratt’s speech “Art of the Contact Zone” Pratt described the relationship between her son and baseball and how the Contact zone was incorporated between the two. Pratt then went on to describe the text Gianna Poma along with the history of the text. Next Pratt describes the European literacy history and then continued to describe the culture, values and ideas that were taking place at Stanford. Pratt ends up tying her speech together by asking who wins and loses regarding teachers having successful teaching …show more content…
While it was reported that Martin felt victimized by the reports and everything that came along with it such as the press and news headlines, Zuckerman stated that "He feels a great sense of relief, Jonathan Martin is a great man, and he's only shown me that he is very honest since the day I met him. He loves football and is eager to get back on the field, regardless of what team he plays for.” Followed by sharing that Martin was ready to resume his football career. This statement followed with incognitos attorney rebutling with stating that Martin was never bullied by Incognito or any Miami Dolphins offensive line members. In the end, Martin was put on the non- football illness and while the season came to an end, Incognito was ultimately never cut off the team. While the bullying took place, there was not safety established for the victim and the perpetrator had no real repercussions besides being suspended for a
The immediate and alarmist tone of Don Banks’s, a senior writer for Sports Illustrated that covers the National Football League, argues in his article that football is an American sport that needs to be changed due to dreadful brain injuries. In Banks’s article he exemplifies an ineffective strategy that conveys his rational and unbiased argument to come across to readers who are fans of football and the NFL. The headline itself - What Price Football - is evident that the concern of America’s beloved sport is being used as a gaining of wealth and entertainment generated by the incongruous with the alarmist tone of Banks’s reasoning.
The beginning of the 2014 season for the NFL has already started out to be a rough one. Several terrible things have happened to give the NFL a bad name this season. One of the biggest things to already happen this season is the Ray Rice incident. Then, before this even happened the NFL had the drug problem of Josh Gordon with the illegal substance abuse.
During Evans’ presentation he discussed how baseball impacted his life. He emphasizes that being culturally diverse is something that must be learned and it does not come naturally to human beings. Throughout the presentation, Evans’ embraces the fundamental skills of baseball, as they can be connected to lessons of life. Evans’ also relates every base to important qualities to one’s self and one’s team, representing that without a powerful
Pratt’s Rhetorical Analysis Stanford college professor, Mary Louise Pratt, spoke on the “Arts of the Contact Zones” in 1990 to collaborating professors in an effort to change the teaching of multi-cultural literacy. Drawing the idea of cultural literacy from an ideological standpoint, she desired to criticize the traditional approach to teaching and embrace what she calls “contact zones.” Pratt has done studies on what she defines contact zone as, she remarks that contact zones are social spaces were two cultures meet with each other. Her aim, however, is very clear that she wants to convince a group of educators to help create a new standard in education that is student-centered and has the intentions in what she calls the contact zone. NFL Concerned with Health or Wealth Football is the most popular sport in the United States. It is a part of school and college life, and everyone wants to try it out. It is the most lucrative professional sport, with the day Super Bowl Sunday functioning as an unofficial holiday. NFL (National Football League) does provide entertainment, but it has a dark secret that the NFL does not want anyone to know. They deny having any connection with CTE.
Even if conduct by a team member of the NFL does not lead to criminal conviction, they will still receive deserved discipline. No matter whom you are, if you are affiliated with the NFL and are working for the NFL, your personal rights are taken away the minute you commit to the team (National Football League, 15-18). This policy is enabling the NFL to discipline anybody on any action they deem is wrong. According to Vice Sports, after Ray Rice’s charges of domestic violence were brought public, it was realized that his case was the first and only one to have.
The book Concussion focuses on the dangers of concussions in football and exposes the NFL to its audience for neglecting what concussions were doing to their players. In the book Concussion the author Jeanne Marie Laskas uses Logos and Analogy to persuade NFL players, families, and fans that the NFL should be discredited for endangering NFL players and to spread awareness about the dangers of Football. In the Book Concussion Jeanne Laskas uses statistics in the book to spread awareness about the dangers of football. “ The G-Force for a football being knocked out is about 60-90 G’s to compare a fighter pilot will pass out at 5 or 6 G’s but that’s over a long period of time” (Laskas 164)
For example, better protective head gear and rules against head butting would allow less permanent damage and head-on-head contact. These changes could make the sport much safer for players, including young children that are being put in danger by playing football. The dangers of football concealed by the NFL were detrimental to the lives of many players, young and old, and their loved ones.
Safety for NFL Players The National Football League founded in 1920, in Canton, Ohio is a professional American football league comprised of thirty two teams. In North America, the National Football League is one of the four major professional sport leagues. But, as a result, of the physical contact that is required, the players often encounter head injuries during or following their careers.
Now others may say that the NFL does not care about the players, they only care about the revenue stream and views, but the commissioner supporting and backing up the players and enforcing the NFL Concussion Protocol shows that he cares about the players mental, physical, and emotional

Generally people think that the NFL should adjust the game, and its rules to increase player safety, statistics clearly show that too much adjusting has been done and the NFL is suffering because of it. Too many rules have been changed for player safety and the current changes being discussed, like getting rid of the kickoff, are going to far and the game is not like it was. Players sign contracts and are aware of the risks they put themselves at when playing the game of football at a professional level. Referees are throwing more flags and the NFL commissioner, Roger Goodell, is handing out a record high of fines. These adjustments by the National Football League are going too far and some rule changes need to be reverted back to their previous rules.

Contact sports involve touching, hitting, or banging other children, which is often why children get hurt in these sports. Among teens, concussions and death have happened. While these sports increase the strength of teenagers as they partake in a school activity, the risk of injury and death is great. The health benefits of contact sports do not outweigh the risks of playing them. The leading causes of death and accidents in sports are caused by concussions.
