The movie Mean Girls, directed by Mark Walters in 2004, is a film that expresses the common stereotypes of public high schools. This film also portrays a few agents of socialization, such as school, peer groups, friendships, and romantic relationships. Mean Girls follows the story of new girl, Cady Heron, who moves from Africa where she did not have much experience with agents of socialization such as school, peer groups, or romantic relationships due to her parents being zoologists and home-schooling her. On her first day, she is overwhelmed by the experience and the many rules associated with high school order. She learns of the different cliques and how everyone in the school functions together. However, as she enters high school, those things begin to fade because she is faced with the expectations of her peers and must do what it takes to fit in. The movies Clueless and Mean Girls are based on two different high schools with similar problems the teen girls face. Although the two films are taken place in different decades and portray a different aspect of what it’s like to be in high school; they both have a similar life lesson.

I chose to write my essay about the Fox sitcom, That 70s Show, which aired 1998-2006. The show is about six teenagers growing up in Point Place, Wisconsin in the 1970s. I will be analyzing how gender is portrayed in this essay. The main characters of this show are Eric Forman, Steven Hyde, Michael Kelso, "Fez," Jackie Burkhart, and Donna Pinciotti. At the beginning of the series, "Kelso" and Jackie are dating, and everyone in the group knows Donna and Eric really like each other.

Conformity is present in every group situation with adolescents. Adolescents are always looking to be a part of a group, usually conforming to the standards of the group. Adolescents often conform because they want to have the approval of the peers that are well liked or “popular”. A great example of adolescents and conformity is in the chick flick ‘Mean Girls’ through the different cliques in high school and how it affects the peers themselves. Caty, the main character, is faced with several difficult situations where she decides to conform with her high school peers getting her in trouble that becomes hard for her to escape.

The film Girl’s Trip has been applauded for being a celebration of blackness in the primarily white film industry. The majority of the cast and the writers for Girl’s Trip are people of color. The film was much more successful than its “white counterpart” Rough Night in box office revenue and reviews. However, most of the black characters in Girl’s Trip shift through various controlling images throughout the movie. The reason these stereotypes are less obvious than they are in some other films is because each characters portrays multiple stereotypes and different times throughout the film.
The film Mean Girls is an American comedy movie for teens that illustrates the mainstream high school experience in the west. The main character, Cady Heron is a sixteen-year-old girl who is a new student at bob school in Illinois. Cady moved from being home-schooled in Africa, and therefore is unaware of the environment and lifestyle at a public high school. Cady then meets Daemon and Janis, who are part of an outcast group. Janis and Damien expose Cady to the norms of their school, talking her through cliques, and most importantly introducing her to “the plastics”, a group that Janis and Damian hated.
Cady has never really had to question her identity because she was homeschooled. She goes through obvious changes after becoming apart of her new group. She insists on working hard to please and be accepted by her intragroup. “Because being with the plastics was like being famous,” Cady thought to herself. Throughout the film Cady has a tussle with her own social identity.
Mean Girls, set in Illinois, depicts the socio-political climate of an American high school, with it’s protagonist, Cady Heron moving from Africa and homeschooling to be socialised in her new society. The antagonist throughout the film, Regina George, is portrayed as an authoritarian woman who has total control of the school (Mean Girls 2004). Regina is shown to engage with numerous sexual partners at the same time and promotes her liberation through wearing a tee-shirt with her bra protruding out the front when she finds two holes cut at her breasts; motivating a new fashion trend throughout the cohort (Mean Girls 2004, Robinson-Cseke 2009, p. 45). This depiction of a strong, independent woman aligns with ‘Post-feminist texts-films, books, magazines and television programs characterised by a model of young womanhood that is empowered, successful, entitled, independent, socially mobile and free to choose her destiny’ (Toffoletti 2008, p. 72). Post feminism is further reflected in the film through the power change which occurs, transferring from Regina to Cady, mirroring the transfer of power from second wave feminism to post feminism.
