Thesis Statement: Lewis and Clark took a journey that would last over 3 years, and made many discoveries about the plants and wildlife, they met Sacagawea who translated and her presents allowed for better communication to open trade with the Indians, but also gained knowledge for maps that would be used for future exploration. President Thomas Jefferson commissioned Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to explore the land gained from the Louisiana Purchase and to let the native American Indians of that area know there was a new presidency. President Jefferson wanted them to record their findings; animals, plants, and locations. The book “ The Journal of Augustus Pelletier “ by Kathryn Lasky is about The Lewis and CLark expedition. Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark want Augustus Pelletier to be one of their men and help them out, to seek for new territories. As Augustus Pelletier did go to help Captains Lewis and William. He saw many Indians, one named Sacajawea who helped them guide them through the new land for them. On May 21, 1804, Augustus Pelletier makes a choice and follows Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, Corps Of Discovery.

Lewis and Clark Expedition In 1803, President Thomas Jefferson managed to initiate the Lewis and Clark Expedition, which was also known as the Corps of Discovery Expedition, after the Purchase of Louisiana, which was considered one of his highlights during his political career, marking the first government-sponsored exploration. President Thomas appointed Meriwether Lewis, the private secretary of the president, to be the Commander of the Expedition. Lewis also asked his close friend William Clark, who Lewis had served with in the army, to help him with the expedition and he actually named Clark the co-commander of the expedition. Generally speaking, the expedition had a significant impact on American history.

They had about thirty-four people in their exploration when they started but when they ended the exploration they had about twenty-seven people. Lewis and Clark travelled through ten states and went back through all ten states. When the Spanish heard about Lewis and Clark and their exploration they tried to arrest them because the Spanish were worried about Lewis and Clark taking the Spanish’s land. Clark was a devoted family man and a valued friend.

These two people acted as interpreters and helped get horses for the expedition. Along the way, Lewis kept journals and collected samples of every unknown plant and animal they encountered. The Corps of Discovery reached the Pacific Ocean in November of 1805. On the way back in 1806, Lewis and Clark split up to explore new territories and look for a faster way home. Once returning home, Lewis was awarded with money for his courageous efforts and was named governor of the Louisiana Territory.

When I got the chance to research a famous deceased individual, I choose Sacagawea. Sacagawea was a very important person in the history of America, in fact without her help Lewis and Clark might have ended up lost on their famous expedition in 1804.

Members chosen for the expedition were sought after for skills that included hunting, blacksmithing, and gunsmithing, making United States Army soldiers a good option for crew who traveled by land, water and horseback, for nearly 8,000 miles over mountains, through plains and by rivers (The Lewis and Clark Expedition, 2016). The success of the Lewis and Clark expedition was important to science, as they made important observations about the land of North America that lead to creation of maps with Captain Clark having the duty of mapping the landscape because of his experience: the result of maps made by Clark became one of the most important achievements of the western exploration. (The Lewis and Clark Expedition, 2016). The scientific information collected on geography, meteorology, cultures, and animal life and plant life were greatly important to the nation (Corps of Discover, 2016). The trip also was partially useful in creating peaceful relations with the American Indians in territories of the Northwest, although not all tribes were accepting of the gestures, giving gifts was important to building peaceful relationships with the American Indians (The Corp of Discovery, 2016).

Biography: C.S. Lewis C.S. Lewis was born on November 29, 1898 in Belfast, Ireland, to the parents of Flora August Hamilton Lewis and Albert J. Lewis. His mother died when he was 10 years of age. Later he died on November 22,1963, in Headington, Oxford. C.S. only has one brother, Warren Lewis, whom he was very close to. As a child he was “enraptured by fantastic animals and tales of gallantry, hence the brothers created the imagery land of Boxen, complete with an intricate history that served them for years” (Biography.com).

HOW DID MERRYWEATHER LEWIS DIE? Did Governor Lewis commit suicide or was he murdered? At the age of 30, Merryweather Lewis had become a national hero after his western expedition. He spent about four years in the wilderness of the Louisiana territory that President Thomas Jefferson had purchased.

Thomas Jefferson’s Instructions to Meriwether Lewis discussed the appointment of Lewis as commander of the expedition, gave specific details of the purpose of the exploration, and provided directions for Lewis to follow when carrying out the trip. Thomas Jefferson carefully selected his personal secretary, Meriwether Lewis, to be the commander of the Expedition and trusted that he would be able to perform the tasks assigned to him. Jefferson requested that an abundant amount of precise notes be taken and that they be protected at all costs. He was interested in learning about the people occupying the land, their culture, the ecosystems, and the land. Meriwether Lewis was the leader of the Lewis and Clark Expedition that was commissioned by President Jefferson to explore the Louisiana Territory. He came back from this trip with new knowledge of the Louisiana Territory proving that the Louisiana Purchase benefitted the whole country. This made him a hero and further strengthened his friendship with Jefferson. Jefferson later appointed Lewis as the governor of the whole Louisiana Territory. The governorship was significant not only because of the title, but because his rival, James Wilkinson, was turned down for the job because of Lewis.

Although, we had many near death experiences, we survived as heroes. On May 16, 1805, we were crossing water, when one of our boats almost capsized, but luckily Sacajawea saved it, along with our most important possessions. Sometime in November of 1805, Lewis dispatched George Shannon, and myself to scout territory along the Columbia River. We did so, and camped with the Chinook Indians.
