Often times, a natural disaster will leave residents of affected areas in a state of awe as they seek to understand what exactly happened. One such example is Hurricane Hugo.

Miners, Millhands, and Mountaineers by R.D. Eller is a story that discredits the myths surrounding the people that live in the Appalachian Mountains. Most people think the Appalachian area was passed up by modernization and see the people as “hillbillies” and as “backwards”. The area is marked by its traditional ways and strong family ties and some people think this contributes to what is trapping the people in that area to poverty. Eller, on the other hand, sees the Appalachian Mountain community differently and wrote this book to shed a new light on the people in that area. He shares many facts that reveal that the area is not as backwards and out of date as many people think.
The Omaha Storm Chasers are a Minor League Baseball team founded just outside of Omaha, Nebraska in the city of Papillion. Due to the Storm Chasers being located in a high population, such as Omaha, the team can interest a larger community of fans that most Minor League teams can’t do. When the winds picked up, the dirt and dusted blew away and caused a big storm. The Black Blizzard was frightening to many people. It could suffocate people and kill them from dust pneumonia.

Superstorm Sandy Superstorm Sandy devastated almost all of the eastern seaboard and parts of Cuba. The hurricane started as a normal tropical storm over the warm waters near the equator (Pacific and Atlantic oceans). Then began to spin counterclockwise and form into a hurricane. The hurricane was given a category one rating on October 23, 2012.Even though the hurricane did not touch the Dominican Republic it still dumped twenty inches of rain in Hispaniola. Over fifty people died from flooding and mudslides.
In 2011, Joplin had a deadly tornado hit down on May 22. It was a regular Sunday afternoon when things started to get bad. It started to get really dark outside, winds at 200 mph, and clouds started to rotate, that's when the tornados started to hit. The joplin tornado wasn't just one big tornado there were 3 small tornados, that come together to make an EF5 tornado. The EF5 tornado hit stores, schools, works, and homes.

The land’s temperature reached record low numbers around 40 degrees below zero (Laskin 41). Hundreds of people heavily struggled in the cold and some would eventually froze to death.

Additionally, the development of flora and fauna in the alpine and lower elevated areas is influenced by the snow cover \citep{wipf_winter_2009} and the formation of avalanches is substantially influenced by the spatial and temporal distribution of the snow cover \citep{schweizer_snow_2003}.
