Everyone has a rough patch at least once in their lives. They way people act in these hard times is a test to show who they are. In Montana 1948, by Larry Watson, David is a twelve year old boy, living in Bentrock, Montana. With both of his parents working, they hired a Sioux woman, Marie Little Soldier, to take care of David. When Marie becomes sick, everything starts to fall apart. This book is about love, family, morals, assault, and death. When the problems come out, so does the characters true personality. In hardship, our true characters are revealed.
Gail is a prime example of how people change when in a difficult situation. Gail is an ordinary Montana working housewife. When the whole situation with Frank is going on, she felt her and her family are being threatened, and that is when the true Gail comes out. "Mother holds my father's Ithaca twelve-gauge shotgun, and since she is a small, slender woman, she has trouble finding the balance point of its heavy length" (11). When the accusation of Frank is exposed, Wes cannot be the submissive anymore. "Stop it, Dad. Just stop" We demands, "Is that why I gave you that goddamn badge? So you could arrest your own brother?" Julian shoots back, "Don't tell me the law. Don't" Wes concluded (120). During this fight, Wes finally stands up to his father. In chapter 6, Wes and his comrade, Dalio, were walking out of their campus to a pizza shop when a red Toyota chased them down. At first the person seemed pretty harmless but as the night went on the person got more aggressive which eventually led to Wes Moore being a victim of a hate crime. Wes Moore illustrates his anger and frustration with the situation. He felt embarrassed to be assaulted like that in front of his comrade without being able to do anything. He contemplates whether or not he should fight the person like he would do in Brooklyn, or take the safe route and flight.

Wes’s mother’s efforts are undying as she is continuously searching for ways to shield Wes from the “metastasizing drug trade”(Moore 56): helping him to find “neutral ground”(Moore 44), finding him a school she views as a “haven” where Wes will be able to “open [his] horizons”(Moore 48), and sending Wes to military school when he “[allows] [his] standards at school to become pathetic”(Moore 54). All of her acts of love, and her devotion to education help Wes to become a highly respected war veteran, and a flourishing businessman; unfortunately, not the same goes for the other Wes Moore, who is now serving life in jail. Wes’s parental supervision immediately skews from the other Wes’s, as his mother—Mary— leaves him home alone at the age of eight, the first time an officer “closed the second cuff”(Moore 35) around his wrist. Without his mother to keep him away from the corruption of the streets, Wes begins to involve himself in local gangs as society and the community around him sweep him up, to the point where there is no return. Similarly, Michael a character in “The Wire” lacks a mother who cares, and despite his initial efforts to stay innocent, he ends up falling to the enticing display of the unity of gangs.
Following the death, his mother decides to move them into their grandparent’s house in New York, hoping this will make things a little less challenging. However, the neighborhood was not how she remembered. Wes was now witnessing more drug activities and dealing with being enrolled into a new school with a divergent environment. Dissatisfied with his life, he began to care less. His attitude caused his grades to drop and eventually he was placed on academic probation.

In “To Build A Fire” the author Jack London uses the contrast of humanity and nature to illustrate how fallible we are. We repeatedly see instances where mistakes return to haunt the man. Jack London as a prospector undoubtedly saw many deaths like these. Prospectors who thought the rules were for the“womanish”, who were later found dead, or never found at all.
