Beowulf and the Acceptance of the Inevitable
Mortality is a central theme in Seamus Heaney’s translation of Beowulf. Through the use of characterization, plot, conflict, and dialogue, Heaney develops this theme and emphasizes the vulnerability of humanity and the power of death. Ultimately, the poem reinforces the fleeting nature of life and the futility of the struggle against mortality, highlighting the universal human experience of grappling with death.
First off, Heaney portrays and describes Beowulf as the greatest warrior and the best hero. He depicts Beowulf as a strong, fearless, and mighty warrior “with the strength of thirty in the grip of each hand” (Heaney, 380-381). Throughout the poem, Beowulf demonstrates his prowess in battle

Grendel is depicted as a monster that terrorizes the kingdom of the Danes, killing its inhabitants and creating fear and despair among the people. However, Grendel is also portrayed as a victim of his fate, a being cursed to live a life of loneliness and violence: “In misery among the banished monsters, / Cain’s clan, whom the creator had outlawed / And condemned as outcasts” (105-107). Grendel’s humanity is further described as ‘the bane of the human grace roamed forth, / Hunting for pray in the high hall’ ” (Vinella). Grendel’s existence highlights the unpredictability of life and the inevitability of death, reminding the reader that even the most powerful beings are not immune to mortality. Moreover, his actions also highlight the struggle against death and the human desire to cling to life, as evidenced by the efforts of the Danes to defend themselves against his attacks: “The highest in the land, would lend advice, / Plotting how best the bold defenders / Might resist and beat off sudden attacks” (172-174). Overall, Grendel’s character represents an effective symbol of mortality in Beowulf. Through his portrayal as a monster and a victim of fate, he reminds us that even the most powerful beings are not immune to death and that the struggle to survive death is a universal human …show more content…
Throughout the poem, characters are repeatedly fighting or defending themselves from monsters. Beowulf’s fights against Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and the dragon move the story forward and demonstrate conflict. This conflict indicates the struggle against death and the limitations of human strength. Against Grendel’s mother, Beowulf first realizes his limitations against a monster: “But he soon found / His battle-torch extinguished: the shining bladed / Refused to bite. It spared her and failed / The man in his need” (1522-1525). Against the dragon, he further realizes that his weapon is useless and this is another symbol of how weak and vulnerable humans
The poem goes on to explain how he rules his kingdom for 50 years after defeating Grendel and Grendel’s mother and returning home. As an old man, even after his previous battles, he continues to be a good king of his people. He soon learns of the havoc that a dragon is bringing to his kingdom in his late years (Beowulf 79-80). He chooses to protect his kingdom and go to fight the dragon, even though he is not physically strong anymore. This is an important point in the story for Beowulf’s character-
On of Beowulf’s other attributes were the bravery that he displayed. In Grendel, only recollections of Beowulf's missions are seen. Resulting in the reader not being able to actually read about beowulf’s mission, leading to not giving the reader a actual idea of how strongly he would be able to destroy his opponents. On the other hand, Beowulf's ego is demonstrated well in his poem named after himself, and the very detailed description made by the author when describing the horrific battle between beowulf and grendels mother. He is made out to be this strong brave man who can not be harmed in order to boost his appearance and ego.
Beowulf and Grendel`s mother are in a dispute where Beowulf defeats and saves his fellow people from this evil entity. The battle of good and evil is portrayed throughout the whole poem, but the hero succeeds slaying the evil. Beowulf and his men go off to Grendel mothers lair where “the water [is] calm and clean” and Beowulf
Beowulf, translated by Raffel, show how two monsters, Grendel and his mother terrorize the Danish people of Herot. The poem itself demonstrates the role that monsters’ play in a story, and how they are seen by the human society. Gender, religion, and societal expectations are the main types of commentary the poet focuses on to demonstrate the role that Grendel and his mother play in the story. At the beginning of the poem, Grendel continuously terrorizes the Danish people due to his desire for killing. Once Beowulf finally kills Grendel, Grendel’s mother discovers this and begins to fume with anger, just like any mother with a son would do.
In the story Beowulf he fought three monsters in the epic poem. The first monster he fought was Grendel who was terrorizing Herot .The second monster he fought was Grendel's mom who was out for revenge on Beowulf for killing her only son. and the final monster he fought was The Dragon who had treasure hidden in the tower. Beowulf fought each of these monsters using different methods, weapons and techniques .
He had scant regard for the dragon as a threat, no dread at all of its courage or strength, for he had kept going often in the past…”(2345-2352). Beowulf was heroic and faced the dragon alone because that was the way he had fought when he was young. In addition, this shows that the hero archetype is both courageous and honorable and must be undaunted when facing even the darkest of evils. Another archetype used by the author is the symbolic light vs. darkness. The author uses these symbols to demonstrate the presence of good and evil throughout the poem.
No longer must he rely on only himself to create immortality. Just as Camus’s Sisyphus must be imagined happy despite all of his toiling, the Christian Beowulf must be imagined content at the moment that his life faded, believing that the devotion injected into his life would provide him a happy safeguard in
This demonstrates the defeat of Grendel, with the help of Beowulf, a warrior from another kingdom, thereby showing the community that exists between Anglo-Saxons through their willingness to fight for each other. Grendel symbolizes the fear that the Anglo-Saxons had toward invasion by other tribes, which was something present in their lives. The poem illustrates that Grendel, and thus the fear of invasion, can only be defeated through the strong bonds of

In Grendel the themes of isolation, hatred, and the questioning of free will or destiny, are all themes throughout the story. Grendel the outcast and monster, tries to find his place in the world. The nature of human beings is examined through the eyes of Grendel, opposing the original epic Beowulf. The good and evil nature of humans is ironically questioned by a “beast.” The meaning of life, destiny or free will, all questions that everyone has at a point in time are all interwoven in this tale by a mythical creature.
Beowulf is a historical poem that was made in the 8th century. Beowulf has taught many people in the world that we should always fight and succeed when it comes to our obstacles. Beowulf is a story that is mostly fighting the people that Beowulf fights for is his king and allies after all he is a strong warrior.he fights lot in the story and someone he fight is grendel a evil monster he fights and dies as a loyal soldier. Beowulf is a wonderful book that poems admiration and loyalty in every way possible. Beowulf was a strong warrior to show how he was i have this quote directly said by beowulf himself”If death does take me send the hammered mail to Higlac and return the inheritance i had from hrethel l and he from wayland fate will unwind
The poem beowulf is known for a strong creature that protects Herot from Grendel also challenged to a dragon to show his techniques. In the poem beowulf there is many different themes one theme that beowulf uses is courage. Beowulf shows that he does not fear anything and can overcome
Beowulf embodies many universal societal heroic values that are signified in the modern world like courage, bravery, and strength. In the poem, Beowulf displays courage. “Now, I mean to be a match for Grendel, settle the outcome in single combat” (Heaney 425-426). This quote shows courage because he’s telling them that he can fight Grendel and wants to weather he wins or loses.
Throughout the poem, Beowulf fights three different monsters and in each of these situations he chooses to begin the fight without their help. He enters into combat with his men by his side, but when the actual fighting begins he defeats the monsters with very little help from them. Beowulf’s strength and physical prowess was unlike any other man in comparison to his height and incredible grip. Furthermore, Beowulf can be categorized as an outcast based on his personality traits. The main character is set apart from the other warriors because of his courage and humility.
Beowulf shows his loyalty in the poem by honoring his uncle’s alliance with King Hrothgar as he resolved to help the Danes rid themselves of this evil monster Grendel. When the monster is slane, the story’s hero doesn’t hesitate to stop Grendels “the greedy she-wolf (471)” mother from enacting her revenge on the Danes. Instead, Beowulf leaps into the unknown depths of the monster’s lair, kills the mother, and cuts off the head of the dying Grendel as a trophy and representation of all he has done. Beowulf’s fight with the monsters in this poem is one of the first classic tales of good versus evil. Because Beowulf was able to kill the evil monster, he is seen as a good hero.
