Motivation has been defined as some driving force within an individual by which they attempts to achieve some goal in order to fulfill some needs or expectations (Mullins, 1996). Beside Mullins, some scholar also define motivation as the psychological process that gives behavior purpose and direction (Kreitner, 1995) ; A predisposition to behave in a purposive manner to achieve specific unmet needs (Buford, Bedeian, and Linder, 1995); An internal drive to satisfy an unsatisfied need (Higgins, 1994); and the will to achieve (Bedeian, 1993); All those inner-striving conditions described as wishes, desires, drives, etc. (Donnelly, Gibson, and Ivancevich 1995); and the way urges, aspirations, drives and needs of human beings direct …show more content…

It considered that all people are self-interested and are motivated by the desire to avoid pain and find joy. All worker will work only if the reward is attractive enough, for the punishment sufficiently disagreeable. This view of the ‘carrot and stick’ approach was built into the philosophies of the age and is still to be found, especially in the older, more traditional sectors of industry. The various leading theories of motivation and motivators seldom make reference to the carrot and the stick. Of course, for the use of rewards and penalties of this metaphor related, is in order to induce desired behavior. It comes from the old story that to make a donkey move, one must put a carrot in front of it or pat it with a stick from behind. It is named in reference to a cart driver dangling a carrot in front of a mule and holding a stick behind it. Due to the food in front of the mule, the mule would move forwards to the carrot because it wants the reward of food, it become a motivation for the mule , at the same time, it also moving away from the stick behind it, since it does not want the punishment of pain, it also become a motivation for it to far away from punishment, because of this story, thus drawing the cart.. According to Maslow, at the first level, which is Physiological need, organizations must provide employees with a salary that only enable them to afford sufficient living conditions in their live. For example, the justifiability here why salary will be the motivation for employee, it is because if they have no salary, their life will very suffer, not even fulfill their basic physiological need, how can them have motivation to work? According to The Star newspaper, in 8th February 2015, security guards at the Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah were went on strike because of the over late payment of salaries.
