Marcus Garvey said, “People without the knowledge of their past history, origin, and culture is like a tree without roots.” For the citizens of Otter Lake, a fictional reserve set in Drew Hayden Taylor’s Novel Motorcycles and Sweetgrass, they are disconnected from their cultural roots. Much of the older generation is suffering psychologically from the effects of residential schools, where their culture was taken from them. The younger generations in return feel no ties to their past as they were raised by people who feelings towards it were conflicted as they spent years being abused and told that their culture was wrong. First Nation’s culture sees the land as a way of connecting with each other and when that is broken then the importance on personal connections lessens. In Motorcycles and Sweetgrass, the lack of personal ties to each other is apparent in Virgil and his mother’s relationship when he is described as, “a latchkey kid with no latch. Or key as most homes in the village were kept unlocked,” (Taylor 27). This shows how although Virgil doesn’t need a key to get into his house as it’s always unlocked, it’s often empty house due to his mother being away at work. Their lack of a bond could very well be the reason why Virgil doesn’t go to school, as latchkey kids are often psychologically affected in that they are more likely to create their own rules as no one is making them for him (Huff, Ken. "The Lonely Life”). If this is true, then it shows how the destruction of their culture has created a disinterest in one important activity such as school. He also lacks a bond with his mother and the rest of his family as he doesn’t get to spend time with them because they are not placing an importance on unity like most First Nation cultures do. This is further proven when Virgil’s uncle Wayne says, “Maybe it was the son of her’s what’s-his-name… Vinnie… Virgin…Virgil” (Taylor 34.) Through Wayne’s martial arts he is trying to prove that change is good, “Some people think that everything is rooted in the past. It is partially. But like evolution tells us if things don’t develop, change evolve adapt they die. My heart and spirit are with my grandfathers my feet are in the now,” (Taylor 243). However, when one doesn’t even know what to change from, it’s hard to move forward. The residential schools were incredibly destructive to their culture and even though the author doesn’t make this the focus of the novel it explains why Otter Lake is the way it is. Their lack of culture has led to a disconnect with the land, shown in the eagerness to build on it and how it’s seen as an administrative task rather than something of cultural significance. The lack of culture has also changed their relationship with each other. Virgil and many other kids are often left to raise themselves while their parents focus on their jobs. In return, they have no connection with their past and where they came from. They don’t know the Anishnawbe language or believe in the magic and myths such as Nanabush at first. This then makes their lives more boring and mundane and make it easier to fall into depression or disinterest. Finally, Drew Hayden Taylor might be saying that although it is the white people’s purposeful destruction of their culture which originally landed them where they are, the citizens now use the white people

Leaving Virgil in a home, previously filled with his grandmother or father but since their passings, without any adult role models to spend time with. Virgil was not close with any uncles or aunts either, as when his Uncle Wayne was watching the funeral service of Lillian take place he wasn’t even certain what Virgil's name was. John’s presence made Virgil show his care for his mother and strengthened the bond between the two, opening Maggie's eyes to the love Virgil had for her. This leads her to make more time for him at the end of the book shown in the quote “No more late nights worrying about “what if” Instead, more television or fishing with Virgil, thinking “whatever” showing the now tight knit bond between Virgil and his mother. The detrimental and unfair categorization of people by race, gender and more, commonly known as discrimination, affects many in society both mentally and emotionally. Many instances of this act of hatred occurred among Aboriginal and Native Canadians in the 20th century. However, for a little Native Indian boy stepping onto the rink, this is the norm that surrounds him. Saul Indian Horse, in Richard Wagamese’s “Indian Horse”, faces discrimination head on, where his strengths for hockey are limited by the racial discrimination from the surrounding white ethnicity. Consequently, this racism draws him into a mentally unstable state, where he suffers heavy consequences.

In the gripping novel titled “Indian Horse,” author Richard Wagamese successfully informs readers about the severely unfair conditions in which the Native Indians were treated. Through Saul’s terrifying experiences in the Residential school and hockey tournaments, readers can effectively identify the purpose of the novel – treating someone through any kind of abuse can leave them with long lasting pain, and memories that will haunt them forever. There were numerous incidents at the residential school regarding physical abuse, and after effects that followed.
When an individual experiences prejudice or a lack of connection to place it can diminish ones sense of identity, leading to social isolation and a loss of cultural practices and traditions. The film ‘Beneath Clouds’ (2002) by Ivan Sen follows two Indigenous teens who experience prejudice and social isolation on their journey to Sydney. The poem ‘We are Going’ (1965) by Oodgeroo Noonuccal expresses the fears Indigenous Australians had over the dispossession land and cultural acceptance. The poem ‘Drifters’ (1999) by Bruce Dawe’s explores the journey faced by a financially unstable family, forcing them to move from place to place, without establishing any connection to the land.
This novel is enjoyable and buoyant story of the fathers and sons of the Dakotas, which gives a light feel on a rather heavy subject matter. Dan, a Lakota elder, has seen it all. The elder strongly speaks the truth about the “Indian” life, past and present. Dan refuses to forget and get over the historical clashes between the whites and his people. The author comes with certain expectations and mind set about the Indians, but his ideology is shattered when Dan refuses to be marked down as just another old Native American wise man.

Native Americans flourished in North America, but over time white settlers came and started invading their territory. Native Americans were constantly being thrown and pushed off their land. Sorrowfully this continued as the Americans looked for new opportunities and land in the West. When the whites came to the west, it changed the Native American’s lives forever. The Native Americans had to adapt to the whites, which was difficult for them.
In his book the Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, Sherman Alexie portrays a teenage boy, Arnold Spirit (junior) living in white man’s world, and he must struggle to overcome racism and stereotypes if he must achieve his dreams. In the book, Junior faces a myriad of misfortunes at his former school in ‘the rez’ (reservation), which occurs as he struggles to escape from racial and stereotypical expectations about Indians. For Junior he must weigh between accepting what is expected of him as an Indian or fight against those forces and proof his peers and teachers wrong. Therefore, from the time Junior is in school at reservation up to the time he decides to attend a neighboring school in Rearden, we see a teenager who is facing tough consequences for attempting to go against the racial stereotypes.

The book focuses on a young boy named Arnold Spirit who shows persistence and bravery as he defies all odds and strides towards a happier more successful life than his parents and ancestors before him. Arnold is a bright, inspiring young boy who grows up with little fortune and is destined to continue down the path of a poor, misunderstood Indian. However, his fate changes for the better when a spark lights the fire inside of him to strive to pursue a better, more flourishing life as he makes an extraordinary decision to transfer to an all-white school for a worthier education. However, the drastic change of schools puts a burden on his family to get him to school as well as leads to extreme bullying from not just kids at his new school but also from his fellow Indians in his hometown. In The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, I learned that it doesn 't matter what your situation is and what you are expected to accomplish in your lifetime or what standards have already been set for you because you can be whoever you want to be with hard work, ambition, and confidence.
Their history has literally been wiped out right before their eyes due to very cruel actions that have wiped out all the natives. Leaving only a few to be able to carry on this culture. This land is their land before all and having been taken from them by force. Not only was the land taken from them but almost all of their people were killed by settlers that came to conquer lands. Throughout history, there have been many literary studies that focused on the culture and traditions of Native Americans. Native writers have worked painstakingly on tribal histories, and their works have made us realize that we have not learned the full story of the Native American tribes. Deborah Miranda has written a collective tribal memoir, “Bad Indians”, drawing on ancestral memory that revealed aspects of an indigenous worldview and contributed to update our understanding of the mission system, settler colonialism and histories of American Indians about how they underwent cruel violence and exploitation. Her memoir successfully addressed past grievances of colonialism and also recognized and honored indigenous knowledge and identity.
By doing this, colonial Canadians assumed that aboriginal cultural and spiritual beliefs were invalid in relation to European beliefs (244). The problem with ridding the First Nations Peoples of their languages, as Williston points out is to “deprive them of the sense of place that has defined them for thousands of years” (245). The private schooling system was an attack on First Nations identities, and their identity is rooted in “a respect for nature and its processes” (245).
Writer Sherman Alexie has a knack of intertwining his own problematic biographical experience with his unique stories and no more than “The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven” demonstrates that. Alexie laced a story about an Indian man living in Spokane who reflects back on his struggles in life from a previous relationship, alcoholism, racism and even the isolation he’s dealt with by living off the reservation. Alexie has the ability to use symbolism throughout his tale by associating the title’s infamy of two different ethnic characters and interlinking it with the narrator experience between trying to fit into a more society apart from his own cultural background. However, within the words themselves, Alexie has created themes that surround despair around his character however he illuminates on resilience and alcoholism throughout this tale.
