The Awakening In “The Awakening” Edna has mixed feelings for people. Including her husband. After her husband goes away she decides he wants to leave him. “The Awakening” by Kate Chopin was challenged for sexual and suicidal content, as well as its explicit cover; however, many argue against its banning because of the positive themes addressed in the novel.

In the Awakenings, there are four main characters who influence the course of actions that occur throughout the story. Although many people play a part in the story, Dr. Malcolm Sayer, Leonard Lowe, Eleanor Costello, and Paula, are arguably the most important characters in the story. Before becoming a neurologist, Dr. Sayer was formerly a doctor who specialized in research science unrelated to human life. After receiving the neurologist position at the hospital located in the Bronx, Sayer becomes both determined and passionate about finding the cure for the patients suffering from encephalitis. Although many other doctors were against the experimental use of L-dopa on the patients, he continued the fight to save the patient's.

The title, The Awakening, signifies the self-realization of Edna Pontellier and her own personal awakening. Edna’s character undergoes a dramatic lifestyle and spiritual change. Also, Edna Pontellier refuses to obey against the social norms by leaving her husband Leónce Pontellier and having an affair with Robert Lebrun. Kate Chopin describes societal expectations and the battle of fitting the mold of motherhood in the Awakening by how Edna Pontellier and Adele Ratignolle contribute to their family in different ways. Edna Pontellier’s attitude toward motherhood is that she is not a perfect mother-women. Adele Ratignolle’s attitude toward motherhood is that she is a perfect mother-women.

Due to Louise Mallard and Edna Pontellier Victorian life style they both see separating from their husband as the beginning of their freedom. Being free from that culture allows them to invest in their personal interest instead of being limited to what 's expected of them. Chopin 's sacrifices her own dignity for the ideal of society’s expectations. Chopin 's sad, mysterious tone seems to support how in their era, there was a significant lack of women 's rights and freedom of expression.

The movie Awakenings accomplishes all these tasks. Based on the true story of Oliver Sacks, a British neurologist who is notable for his accomplishments in temporarily waking up catatonic patients who suffered from the encephalitis epidemic in the early 1900s. In the movie, Oliver Sacks is portrayed as an American doctor named Malcolm Sayer, who is played by the actor Robin Williams. Also, this film conveys deeper messages about human psychology, which greatly appeals to its audiences, who immediately get absorbed into the emotional plot and timeless lesson.

One can’t be happy or attempt to be happy if that person is suffering depression; therefore, expressing agony is a starting point in achieving happiness. As Weiner also says, “A love of language may not guarantee happiness, but it allows you to express your despair eloquently, and that is worth something. As any poet (or blogger) knows, misery expressed is misery reduced” (Weiner 158). During his travel, Weiner discovers that in any language, there are more words describing sadness than words describing happiness. People tend to express their grief more strongly than their happiness.

In The Awakening the main women characters I focused on are Edna Pontellier, Adele Ratignolle, and Mademoiselle Reisz. I also made some notes about the lady in black and Mariequita. Edna is a twenty eight year old married woman with two children. Early on in the book it was apparent that she was unhappy with her marriage. Her husband accused her of neglecting their children and not being attentive enough with them.

Awakenings is a movie that relates to actual event which described a specific disease and the drug used to treat it. Dr. Sayer is one of the main characters who try to use a new drug to treat some patients who appear to be catatonic which causes the patients are not able to respond and function like a normal person and no hope to recover to be “normal”. He is successful. Unfortunately, this drug just brings temporary “awakenings” to these patients and soon after, they would return to their former catatonic states. What the movie conveys are to provoke deep thought into the value of our lives and to give the audiences the information of the symptoms of the disease and the side affects of the drug.
