Reflective Essay: My Professional Development Experience

In an uncertain world, competence is greater than just behaviours, skills and knowledge used in improving performance. Notably, development and learning are mandatory in achieving a continuous competence. Continuing Professional Development (CPD) refers to a way in which midwives and nurses improve, maintain and broaden their expertise, ability, and knowledge and develop professional and personal qualities necessary during their professional career (Jeffery et al., 2016). CPD is hugely significant in health care system in ensuring continuous competence to protect the public. Also, CPD cycle involves reviewing practices hence nurses and midwives have a mandate to keep records which are used randomly by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) for auditing.

Learning to read and write was not particularly hard, but it still took a long time before I was proficient doing it. To 6-year-old-me, reading and writing was just a thing grown-ups forced me to do to keep me away from my toys and the TV. I did not have any interest in doing it because it felt like a chore. Every second I spent practicing my reading was a second I spent away from my toys. Letters were not entertaining at all.

Looking back at the beginning of this semester I was unsure of why I was in this class to begin with. I had thought that my writing was good enough to pass any class that Lake Land had to offer, but I was completely wrong. The things I have learned this semester of what not to put in my papers is a lot more than I think I have ever learned in a class before. I have learned to proofread my papers better, proper punctuation, and just to relax and not overthink my topic. Proofreading my papers has always been a weak spot for my writing.

From my work as a Resident Advisor this year, I have improved my time management and organizational skills. Taking fifteen credit hours, serving as a work-study student, coordinating internships through APPLES Service-Learning, and working as a Resident Advisor are a few of the things that I had on my plate throughout this semester. Keeping up with these responsibilities seems like a somewhat daunting task – what’s the perfect balance between these commitments? Throughout this last year, I found my stride, and keeping up with it all felt like less of a balancing act, and more like a well-oiled machine. As far as administrative responsibilities, I am very comfortable with the desk work that comes with working in Housing.

My writing style has clearly developed over the past semester and I believe that the writings in his portfolio demonstrate that I have mastered the course materials presented in this English course. My writing style has changed in the fact that I have become more open minded in my conclusions in papers. I have ventured away from making all my conclusions based on textual evidence and have been more open minded and drawn conclusions based more on how I feel emotionally about the subject. This doesn’t mean that I only will draw conclusions from how I feel emotionally but it means that I can now do both effectively.

Writing has always been an issue but yet interesting subject of mine. As hard as I try and write essays, and papers I just can’t get the hang of writing. But after taking this class, I did learn different writing technique and improved my writing proficiency, material body of formatting, and how to uncovering and properly use sources. Through class exams, essays, and a research paper, I was able to learn new writing skills. Although I have learned a variety of things, my writing still needs improvement.

It was at this exact moment when I experienced my watershed moment. It was at this exact moment when I realized how even the things that we hate doing the most, are absolutely necessary to us because they define who we are as a person. I realized the issue with my life was not that I wasn’t intelligent, or that I was untalented at gymnastics, or that I had poor multitasking skills or an inability to cope with stress. My issue was my inability to want to get the best out of the advantages that the sport brought me. I had lived my entire life without realizing that all the work that I was putting into the gym was to eventually gain something greater.

1.3 Research Hypotheses This study proposes the hypotheses that teachers, who are exposed to peer observation process are more likely to improve in their everyday life. Whereas the other hypothesis proposed is that , teachers who are not exposed to a process of observation, face problems in their professional development. Additionally, this study makes attempt to respond to questions in finding out the way to enhance teaching and learning via process of peer observation.

Welch pushed me to greater limits than I thought were possible as a third grader. Without her showing me that feeling of accomplishment after you finish a challenging book, I would have never attempted to read some of the books I have. I would never have tried to read Jane Eyre or 10,000 Leagues Under the Sea if she had not, at an earlier age, showed me that love and the challenge of reading books where you do not know every word. I owe a great deal of my academic success to her, for without her I would not have started challenging myself to go above and beyond the required level. What Mrs. Welch gave me is not quite something I can precisely explain, for she gave me more of a character quality or a mentality than something like a book or a quote.

My writing process is like a car on the road. There are moments where the car just keeps on driving and then sometimes the car comes across a road block. The car has to find a different pathway to reach the destination. It is pretty scary being the last child in my family of four to attend college. I’m expected to know more than my older sibling and parents since I have been taught everything they know about life.

Academic success to me is achieving good grades and understanding the material to get good grades. Academic success also means to have an good attendance. I already get mostly A’s and B’s, but I am not good at staying on top of things. To improve my academic success I will attend class more often, be more organized, pay attention in class, and not procrastinate.

In professional development teachers are treated as active learners (Lieberman, 1994; McLaughlin and Zarrow, 2001), these learners are engaged in the concrete tasks of teaching, assessment, observation and reflection (Dadds, 2001; King and Newmann, 2000; Darling-Hammond and McLaughlin, 1995). The process of professional development is perceived as a long term process during which teachers learn over time that will result in acquiring more new experiences that allow them to be more effective through relating the prior knowledge with the new experiences (Cohen, 1990; Lieberman, 1994; Ganzer, 2000). Professional development is also perceived as a process which takes place within a particular context by relating training to classroom experiences;

However, once I started putting time dedicated time in what I found important I became happier and found myself being able to put more into activities such as QTHON.

Observed teachers benefit from analyzing the descriptive data the observer collects about classroom interactions and the class environment; they can also grow though discussions that result from observer questions and suggestions to improve learning outcomes. Based on their discussions and reflections, participants can develop action plans or action research projects to improve their teaching practice.
