I am conducting an experimental design research. Experimental design is sometimes defined as, “observation under controlled conditions.” True experimental research designs are those where researchers have complete control over the extraneous variables, as well as, can predict confidently that the observed effect on the dependable variable is only due to the manipulation of the independent variable. My study population is serial killers, however, studying the entire population would be too difficult in that these cases involve multiple victims; the series may span days, months or even years; they can involve several jurisdictions; the motive involved may not be easily discerned; offender behaviors may not be consistent among all the cases; …show more content…
Because of this, I am going to use purposive sampling methods in choosing my subjects for the study. Purposive sampling is a form of non-probability sampling where samples are selected on the basis of knowledge of the population, its elements, and the nature of the research aims. Purposive sampling is great in that it provides with a large range of techniques. One of the key benefits of this sampling method is the ability to gather large amounts of information by using many techniques, such as, homogenous sampling, expert sampling, critical case sampling, etc. The main disadvantage of purposive sampling is the greater chance of researcher bias, as each sampling is based entirely on the judgment of the researcher, who is essentially trying to prove a specific point. For this reason, I will strive to make decisions based on accepted criteria, not on what will best support my theories. Another problem with purposive sampling might be that after a researcher publishes their findings, it may be hard to defend that that if different selections had been made during purposive sampling, a different result might have occurred. Qualitative interviews are a type of field research method that provokes information and data by directly asking questions of …show more content…
I will begin my interview with these types of questions because it is the best way to make the subject comfortable and allow me to gain maximum flexibility to pursue certain topics. Although it may generate less systematic data, which may be difficult to analyze, it can help me gain a better insight into the lives of my serial killers. While I will begin my interview with a more laid back, conversational approach, I will also be asking questions from a list I prepared prior to the interview. Thus, making it a semi-structured type of interview. It will be hard to respond to new topics that unfold during the interview, but on the other hand, will obtain the necessary data for my study. I have come up with many questions I hope to answer during my interview. To list a few, I will ask what their highest level of education is, did they enjoy school, are they close with their families, when did they first become violent, what did they feel before, during, and after they committed murder, how did they choose their victims, what was their motivation the first time they killed, do they ever feel remorse, and who would they not see as a victim. I will record their answers with a voice recorder, because it would take too long to write
It really depends on the child and their capacity to recall and identify events and people. The most famous case I know where a child witness was the key witness was the Lester Street Murders in Memphis, TN. On March, 2008, Jessie Dotson went to 722 Lester Street, where his brother, Cecil, lived with his girlfriend and their children. Jessie killed four adults were multiple gunshot wounds, killed two children, ages 2 and 4, who were beaten and stabbed. Three other children, one just 2 months old, also were beaten and stabbed, but survived the attack.
Carter Hendry Mrs.Dixon Criminal Justice III-7 23 October 2017 Kuklinski Richard Leonard Kuklinski was born on April 11, 1935 in Jersey City, New Jersey of 1935, and suffered from a tough childhood upbringing. His mother Anna Mcnally was an extremely strict catholic, and regularly hit her son for any “non religious” acts that he committed. His father, Stanley, worked on the railroads and was a deadbeat alcoholic who regularly beat his son. In Kuklinski’s interviews he often contributed his insanity and love for violence to his father. Kuklinski was not only beaten by his father but he was regularly bullied at school which led to his feelings of anger and less power.
c. A researcher is planning to analyze the effect of multiple strategies to teach fractions to 6th – graders in Happy Valley School District. She assigns each 6th – grader a number and uses a random number generator to select students for each of her research groups. Ans. Systematic Sampling because she assigns a random nth number to select students for each of her research groups.
HH Holmes is often regarded to be one of the first, well known serial killers in the United States. Holmes’ murders were both elaborate and ruthless by committing the murders in a house made just for his crimes, which would eventually be dubbed the “Murder Castle.” Before Holmes began his murder spree, he started out at lower level crimes. While in medical school, Holmes was accused of taking corpses, and attempted to reap insurance claims using the bodies. While living in Chicago, Holmes built a large house that had features such as trap doors, and rooms specifically used for his torturing.
Mass shooting episodes have increased over recent decade and received substantial media coverage during the last year. Multiple schools, clubs, and churches, and public places across the United States have been impacted, resulting in the deaths of innocent people. The United States has more mass shootings than any other country between 1966 and 2012. There has been shootings in public places receiving media coverage and giving the perception that they are becoming the new normal.
On August 8, 1969, the “Manson Family” cult brutally murdered Sharon Tate, who was at that time 8 ½ month pregnant. Along with Tate, four others were murdered by the group, a hairdresser, a coffee heiress, a filmmaker, and an 18-year-old at the Beverly Hills home of Tate and her husband. There were a total of 169 stab wounds between the 5 vctims. The killers used one of the victims blood to write “Pig” on the front door of the home.
• The accuracy of the information reported within the reports being used in the research study. • Recalling the incident for the victim can be very uncomfortable and upsetting. • There can also be limitations of some ethical obstacles for example if some cases are still open cases, information may not be able to be discussed. • With the survey sampling method, putting together a survey limits one from asking questions that normally may have been encountered in a one on one
The article “Toronto police chief says civilians failed to help investigation into allege serial killer,” published on February 27, 2018, is about how with the help of the “city’s gay village” the police might have been able to identify the serial killer sooner. The Chief, Mark Saunders, started a two-year investigation called Project Houston for the disappearance for the three men whom are all within the similar age range and have similar physical appearance and all had ties to the village. Also, chief said, they have heard a lot of sources but if those sources had spoken up when we had Project Houston, he believed there would have been a different outcome and would have potentially been able to catch the serial killer earlier. (Ha, 2018)
In the textbook by Hickey it basically says that “Caputi examines power and serial murder and suggest that women are usually selected as victims by male serial killers because of female powerlessness”. Even though females have equal rights in the today’s world they aren’t measured up to men. They are prohibited to do certain things men do. For example play football. I wouldn’t doubt that females can do it talent wise but physically I would doubt it because the game is so physical.
Murder, willingly taking another human's life, is considered a heinous crime in the United States, and from the sociological perspective, breaks an important more. Serial Murder, therefore, is a sociologically deviant phenomenon where a person kills two or more people in distinct events, and an FBI overview of serial killers states “No single cause, trait, or even a group of traits can differentiate or identify serial killers … from other types of violent offenders” (FBI). However, use of the sociological perspective to identify potential factors in these cases is possible. As a boy, Jeffrey Dahmer was described as being a loner and a poor student- and had been sexually abused by a neighbor. He is homosexual, which carried a negative stigma during most of his lifetime: he was described as appearing to be a gentle, suave man in homosexual circles.
Criteria: Describe the criteria for a serial killer and what did the person do to qualify as a serial killer? A serial killer is a person who murders three or more people. The murders take place within a certain period of time and takes a break (cooling off period) between murders. The FBI believe it’s two or more murders which are done as separate events, and may be done with a second offender.
Section 1: Description of Jeffrey Dahmer Jeffrey Dahmer, the Milwaukee Cannibal, killed 17 homosexual boys and men. Jeffrey Dahmer’s case helped the study for medical and psychology fields. When he was born he was known as happy child but after getting a surgery to correct a double hernia it changed his personality completely making him more reserved. To cope, Dahmer started to dissect animals, abuse alcohol and developed antisocial tendencies. This case shocked and sickened many individuals due to the violent nature of the murders.
Figure 1.3 represents the different relationships murder victims had with their killer. This data goes hand in hand with my study showing that most female victims were victims of other family members which could be due to infanticide by their parents. Female’s highest percentage of killers were partners or ex partners which could correlate with males
Although I have not had a chance to help or conduct a research, I think all methods of study contain a bit of bias. After, researchers and scientists are human. Anyhow, random assignment is a useful technique yet, it is important to consider other possible methods of assignment and to work out which one will beneficial for the study the most before committing to one type of method since there many types of samples. For instance, if the experiment were to look at the treatment of depression using Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) treatment and drug therapy, it would be hard to randomly allocate the groups. Studies have shown that people with severe, chronic depression recover better than those with mild depression when it comes to ECT treatment.
Additionally, the systematic approach offers the researchers and the statisticians with a level of control and a sense of process (Kalton, 2014). Therefore, it is precisely beneficial for the studies with a narrowly established hypothesis. The systematic sampling technique normally makes sure that there are high levels of representativeness; hence it does not require usage of a table representing random numbers. The other merit of systematic sampling is that in a clustered selection, a situation where the randomly chosen samples are not close together in the population, it is typically eliminated by the approach of systematic sampling. Another merit of routine sampling is that it has the low-risk
