Easy to encounter, not so easy to overcome, failures claw at hopes and successes. They bring down those who are weak enough to let them in. They strengthen those that can get past them. I got past one that almost ruined my chances for new opportunities. At the end of junior year, a majority of the upperclassmen band members send in applications to become the next leaders of the band during marching season. These leaders are the role models that, as an upcoming senior, I intended to join. I couldn’t understand how I couldn’t get it. I spent hours after performances unloading supplies. I had perfect attendance for every afterschool practice since freshmen year and always turned everything in on time. Even when it was off season I was helping in every way I could like volunteering for band camps that taught little kids how to play the french horn. There was not a doubt in my mind that I wouldn’t get it. With that, I turned in my application as soon as I could. The list of leaders was posted the next week and I could hardly wait. I remember when he put it up, as I was waiting there and was one of the firsts to …show more content…
I was only a few days in when I stepped back and noticed something, all the leaders were missing out on other opportunities. They were consumed with responsibilities and so narrow minded towards band that most of them were missing the fun times outside of their narrow vision. When they were given new opportunities outside of band they mostly ignored them because they only had one thing on their mind. It made me realize that all the duties I’ve done for band had given me more opportunities to be a new different leader around the school. By not being a leader in the band I was allowed to see them. I was offered a position on the Academic counsel that I might have said no to if I was too fixated on band. The failure had allowed me to learn to be not so fixated on one
Alongside football games, the Mighty Trojan Marching Band attends many competitions throughout the marching season. Bands true mettle are shown on the field. Competitions are a highlight for many members of the band, since they are filled with rival bands, food and music. While marching band members see band having an ultimatum, get a trophy, or don’t try, Band director Mr. Farrell stresses the importance of professionalism, effort and fun. Third year marcher, trumpet player and junior Blakely Parker added, “What beats talent?
“There is no better than adversity. Every defeat, every heartbreak, every loss, contains its own seed, its own lesson on how to improve your performance the next time,” Malcolm X, and activist overcame adversity by learning from his defeat. Adversity affects our world today too. With our harsh rules and drive to be better, one must strive to succeed and overcome the hardships. While there are many qualities needed to overcome adversity, having faith, keeping composure, and receiving support are vital in order to overcome adversity.
After months of demanding work writing new resumes, answering essay questions, and interviewing with my directors, I was granted my wish. I was finally going to be color guard captain. I have now been captain for two years, and have learned many lessons from my experience. When our band switched directors, I was required to be flexible and learn how to best advocate for my team and myself. Throughout the season, I was open-minded and willing to listen and try new tactics.

I had watched patiently as older members of my high school moved on to UGA and were indoctrinated into the finest band in the land. In order to try and achieve this goal I worked tirelessly in High School making the grades to ensure my acceptance to the University. As a French Horn player I was taught to focus and work hard until you achieved your goal, whether this is in band, biology or college acceptances. I used this
A band director can teach students on a middle school level up to a college level depending on his or her degree. As the students mature, the band director should see exponential growth in the students ' playing ability. A band director teaches students how to play their intruments well and to fluently read and interpret music. Students should be exposed to a variety of different genres of music. Band directors may also give private lessons to students who wished to be above average or that simply need some one on one help.
As a junior in high school, I was inducted into the National Honor Society for doing exceptionally well in my academic endeavors and actively participating in volunteer events. My contributions through this organization have made a significant impact on both my personal development and my community’s support services. The numerous volunteer projects in which I have participated have prepared me to continue helping others in the future. Through projects such as building houses from the ground-up with Habitat for Humanity, I have developed teamwork skills, discovered my management potential, and increased my social network, all while working to provide services for less fortunate individuals in my community. Every member of a marching band is important, but some may argue that the drum majors are the most important people in the band that are a part of the student body. Drum majors are mainly responsible for the togetherness of the band, whether through tempo on the field or street, or the overall togetherness as a band community. Specifically for the senior drum major, it is important that the candidate has the ability to carry out all duties such as instruction and conducting, a prideful and passionate spirit for the band, and past experience of leadership to look back on to continue to lead well. I firmly believe that since being the junior drum major, my ability, pride, and experience have only improved and that I am the best candidate for
Some people say that difficult situations are really hard to overcome
Imagine sweat dripping down your face, you 're marching in your hometown parade wearing a full outfit of polyester in sweltering hot weather. Or in late October when the weather is brisk, and you’re ready to take the field for competition with snot dripping from your nose because now the polyester does nothing to keep you warm. Maybe those times weren 't the most enjoyable but I can honestly say that I would never trade it for the world. 4 years ago, I joined the high school marching band.
Michael Phelps, a professional swimmer, once said, “There will be obstacles. There will be doubters. There will be mistakes. But with hard work, there are no limits,” (¨AZ Quotes¨). This quotes shows that throughout one’s journey they will eventually have to go against many obstacles, and have to find a a way to get through them.
First, leaders need to respect the efforts of others in order to criticise them in an effective way, and secondly, when receiving criticism people need to respect that there are changes that need to be made in order to be better. Overall the marching band has taught me many lessons that I will carry with me throughout my life, and the three that stand out to me are having the ability to display positivity to help make it through anything, how to serve others as a leader and when it won’t be seen, and respecting things other than people, for example, the efforts of others and criticism. I consider these three lessons to all help build up my character, which was also greatly shaped by band, and will never be the
During my senior year I decided be more active in the Let 's Move Club at school. I was already managing the volleyball team but I wanted to challenge myself and run for an officer position. I ended up getting the social media correspondent position but it turned out to be far more demanding than I could ever imagine. The first day on the job I was told that I was going to assist one of the co-president 's of the club in planning the annual basketball tournament.
Attaining the rank of Eagle Scout required the orchestration of a 200 hour service project that, at the time, seemed impossible. Throughout my high school career, I was so used to adults providing me with concrete instructions that finding and managing my own project appeared quite daunting. What if the community did not like my project, or what if I failed at managing it? I soon rose above my apprehensions and reached out to the greens manager at my local golf course to inquire about replacing some rotten, wooden planters. He promptly called me back and said he loved the idea—in fact, it had been on the golf course’s agenda for years.
In our life, there are periods of challenges that we must face, but the real challenge is how we grow and learn from overcoming them. Being naive children, we believed that life was simplistic and effortless. Well, we were wrong, we can only yearn for life to be easy. Growing up, we continue to face countless hurdles that only get bigger and bigger. My life, in particular, has been filled with numerous up and downs.
