Core Values and Ethical Principles The six core values recognized by the NASW Code of Ethics are: service, social justice, dignity and worth of person, importance of human relationships, integrity, and competence (NASW, 2008). These values are defined and expanded upon, and are then listed as ethical principles. Several of these principles apply to this case. The service value’s main goal is to help people in need and address social issues. In this case spousal abuse is the social issue, and Marietta is certainly a person in need. These fall under the service compartment of values. In the area of Social Justice, Marietta’s heritage and financial class can lead to discrimination. Every effort should be made to make all information, services, …show more content…
This value places much emphasis on the client making their own decisions. This application is extremely relevant in this case and must be weighed against other consequences. Marietta’s desire to return home rather than stay at the shelter creates the dilemma of honoring her wishes even when it may be detrimental to her. She also needs to be made aware of the opportunity that the shelter is offering to improve her situation. Ultimately Marietta must determine the direction to take. The Importance of the Human Relationships core value is crucial in this case. Creating understanding and trust with Marietta can only be achieved with a strong relationship. This may be difficult with the language barrier. The well-being of Marietta is in jeopardy and requires intervention. The way she views her situation is with despair and hopelessness. Good communication, and a strong relationship with her could drastically enhance her view of …show more content…
Encouragement and support are useful when addressing her depression and low self-esteem. Teaching her ways that she can improve and help herself, should be rewarding and satisfying for Marietta. The more involved she can be in her own story, the better. The chances of social justice issues getting involved in this case are strong. If the organization elects to deny help to clients who will not leave abusive situations, conflicts will occur. A difficult decision must be made concerning whether to carry out the shelters orders, or your personal view of the ethical limits set by the NASW Code of Ethics (NASW, 2008). For a decision of this importance it is best to seek consultation before moving forward. As with all cases, the Garcia case engulfs the broader picture, and many policy changes could be implemented. It is the job of social workers to challenge these policies on a continuous basis. Every possible action should be taken to improve policy whenever applicable. Responsibilities of social workers to the broader society are covered in section six. 6.04 Social and Political Action are most relevant with this case. Section (b) explains that special attention should be given to people that are vulnerable, disadvantaged, oppressed or exploited.
In the meeting, topics such as laws regarding vagrancy and whether to call the police was discussed and debated. The assistant director, Bridget O’Dea, brought up a valid point about the homeless from an ethical standpoint. Her argument is that as a society one should help those who cannot help themselves (). She believes that the library should let the woman stay since she is not doing any
Booth House provides a great service to the community of Syracuse. It has led to less mixing of the homeless population by creating a separate place for teen boys and girls. Though their process is not perfect and there is always room for improvement, they still manage to impact many lives. While writing this paper the writer began to really contemplate the assessment process at Booth House. To the writer Booth House’s confidentiality process is well done.

The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) has defined six key values for social work practice: service, social justice, the importance of human relationships, dignity and worth of the person, and competence. Social justice is an essential core value within Mission Australia in guiding its programs and campaigns. This is exemplified by Mission Australia addressing and educating the community on social injustice and disadvantage, pushing for systemic change to enhance the lives of marginalised and at-risk individuals. By offering services and programmes that aim to address the underlying causes of social problems, like education on homelessness, Mission Australia exemplifies the fundamental concept of social justice and why it should be addressed not only by charity organisations but the general public. For instance, their housing and homelessness programmes work to give those who are homeless or at risk of becoming so safe and affordable accommodation in which donations of the community are accepted.
Social workers have several responsibilities. They have to provide service, justice, and dignity to a client. They have to possess integrity, competence, and patience. Social workers need to possess knowledge of human rights, and how to perform scientific inquiry. Social workers occasionally have cases in which problems ensue and a solution is not found within a certain time frame.
As a result, several social welfare policies were established. These social policies are briefly discussed and a conclusion about which social welfare goal, demmodification or social solidarity, would best achieve the goals of the social work profession. Keywords: demmodification, poverty, social solidarity, social theory, social welfare policy James Russell, In Double Standard, defines a social problem as common problems that arise out of peoples’ interrelationships, and states that social theory is important in how social problems are perceived (Russell, 2011, p 3). As the social welfare goal for poverty is discussed, it is important to have an understanding of the term social welfare. T.H. Marshall defines social welfare as the policy of governments with regards to action having a direct impact on the welfare of citizens, by providing them with services or income (Russell, 2011 )
The case worker along with the client, payee, guardian, or other responsible parties collectedly create the service plan. The case worker present the ideal, but it is the client’s job to complete all paperwork, applications, or request outside services. Sometimes creating that balance of self –determination and vulnerable is often times a challenge, because the values and belief of a client can be totally different from a social worker. Even though case workers feel strongly about a situation it is the clients right to do as their please. For example, I and Level 5 caseworker were doing visit one day.

SHOW CONNECTION Jon Kurht’s article “When helping doesn't help” is a personal narrative discussing Kurht’s experience managing a homeless shelter, and discussing the hardships and complications that come with helping the homeless. Kuhrt notably states that shelters “actually bred further cynicism and depression in those young people because many were ashamed of what they were doing - they knew they were profiting from the naivety and kindness of others.” Logos can be found within the reasoning and conclusions found by Kurht. Profession Code of Ethics Comparison As a social work student, we are provided with the foundational education necessary to succeed in our profession. The National Association of Social Work (NASW) Code of Ethics is the most significant publication because it “is intended to serve as a guide to the everyday professional conduct of social workers” (NASW Code of Ethics, 2017). For this assignment, we are charged with exploring other professional codes of ethics to gain a better understanding of how they may be similar or differ from one another. Therefore, I choose to explore the American Counseling Association (ACA) Code of Ethics with the intention of conducting a comparison analysis of both documents.

As social work professionals, we have a commitment to advocate for our clients. Because of our advocacy commitment, we also should be committed to social justice. Change cannot happen overnight; however, it also cannot happen if people are not willing to speak up about the things they are passionate about. Additionally, social workers must ensure that they are empowering their clients. As social workers, we should be committed to using a person first approach.
